Also striking as you listen for longer is how accurately specific effects such as voices, gun shots, engine rumbles and so on are placed both on and off the screen. The 50QN90A may not have a Dolby Atmos decoder, but it often sounds more ‘spatial’ than many TVs that do. It’s worth adding, though, that if this feature appeals to you its effect is more pronounced on larger screen sizes. How much color and contrast can be tweaked by any one of the five picture setting modes. Standard tones down colors and brightness for a more natural picture that will look good in most living rooms, while Dynamic mode is a good fit for rooms with an abundance of natural light. Movie mode adds an almost sepia-like tone to the content, while Film Maker mode turns off motion processing completely for a more cinematic experience. All the modes have their pros and cons, but we found each to be enjoyable in their own way.

Much like the smartphone app, this smart TV app will allow unlimited and free access to countless hours of independent entertainment. Of course, we can only speak about the 65-inch version of the TV that we had in for testing – the 55-inch TV might be totally fine with its lower weight and center of gravity. But it’s equally adept with upscaling lower-quality sources. While the QN94A doesn’t boast the advanced neural network upscaling of the 8K models, its upscaling offers an excellent sense of fine detail, clean and healthy-looking colours, and sharply etched lines that bring out more definition with HD sources.

Samsung will say the superior HDR performance means Dolby Vision isn’t necessary, but it’s difficult to justify the company’s stance when this dynamic metadata format is used by almost every video streamer, and supported by every other TV manufacturer. White Balance: Using this picture setting, you can fine-tune the appearance of the white color on your TV. If you think that white things on your TV screen have a red, green, or blue tint, you can adjust the Red Offset and Gain, the Green Offset and Gain, and Blue Offset and Gain. Depending on your TV model, you may have 2-point, 10-point, or 20-point white balance settings. By adjusting these settings you can make whites appear brighter.

Thankfully, Samsung does let you tweak the sound through an EQ if you leave it on the Standard sound mode, however that option will be disabled if you have AI Sound turned on. If you don’t want to use AI and you don’t want to fiddle with the EQ, you can use the Amplify setting to get an uplift in mids at low volumes, which does help alleviate some problems. There are a couple of other issues with the 50QN90A’s pictures too. First and worst, in the most instantly appealing Standard picture preset, pretty excessive amounts of shadow detail can be lost in the darkest parts of the picture unless you nudge up the dedicated Shadow Detail adjustment. Go too far with that, though, and the brightness ‘lift’ it causes can start to have a negative impact on bright parts of the picture. Surround yourself with synchronized sound from your TV and soundbar, orchestrated in complete harmony with Q-Symphony.

However, all the testing was conducted while stand mounted, raising the question of how wall mounting would effect the woofers built intothe rear of the TV?
