About this deal

Earth is a mixture of land and water and is the only planet in our Solar System to have liquid water on the surface.

Using a bodkin, make a hole and thread a piece of cotton yarn through the top of each planet and tie the ends. If the planet has an axial tilt, remember to make the hole the correct number of degrees down from the top. How to Make A Solar System Model for Kids Step 1 Turn these planets and the sun into a solar system mobile for kids.

Curriculum

Children can be given the choice of medium to colour their planets in, such as paints, crayons and coloured sand etc. By combining art with other subjects like science, children are more likely to retain knowledge learnt in the activity because of its visual aspect. Art is also important in fostering creative expression and imaginative ideas. It’s also a great facilitator of communication through sharing ideas, as well as developing critical thinking and the ability to interpret the world around us. Mars - named after the Roman god of war, it is also sometimes referred to as the "Red Planet". It is the second-smallest planet in our solar system. Repeat with all other planets and string them on the embroidery loop or similar. All done and ready for display.

The Solar System Mobile is ideal for a childs bedroom and is easy to install, all the hardware is included and the unit is battery powered so there's no need for a mains connection. It can be hung from most parts of the ceiling using the parts provided and whilst it makes a superb night light, it does not replace the existing light-fixture. Indeed the direction the north pole points changes by 1 degree every 72 years (it's called precession), and completes a whole circle about every 26,000 years. This means that although the stars (mainly) stay in the same place, the solstices and equinoxes (which are defined by the movement of the Sun with respect to the Earth's axis) change by 1 degree every 72 years with respect to the stars. And because the position of the zodiac is defined by the equinoxes, it also rotates by 1 degree every 72 years with respect to the stars.

Now, to make the sun, cut a slit from one edge to the centre of each of the two circles. Then, slot them together so that it looks 3D. Solstice and Equinox Data Courtesy of Fred Espenak, www.Astropixels.com The Zodiac - and "Hey... That planet is in the wrong place!" But in the long run, your kids will have enough brain exercise by the time they are done solving the puzzles. When the puzzle is complete, they have a dimension of just 750mm X 500mm, which doesn’t take up much space.

Dwarf planet positions are also shown - but it should be realised that these objects often rise far above and below the plane of the ecliptic. This is because their orbital planes are tilted with respect to the ecliptic - by more than 40 degrees in some cases. So be aware that just because the app may occasionally show a planet and a dwarf planet to be very close to each other in the plan view, they may, in fact, be separated by a large perpendicular distance. Earth's Tilt First, use the compass to draw the planets and the sun onto the white card. For our space mobile, we’ve made the eight major planets plus the ‘dwarf planets’ Ceres, Pluto and Eris. When you give the kids to assemble the pieces together, they also develop their eye-hand coordination, which is a great step in the child’s development. Also, the kids will be developing their motor skills.

On one disc of each planet cut a thin slit from the bottom edge to the middle, then on the other cut from the top to the middle and slot them together, using a small dot of glue to secure them. Cut the middle 9.5cm out of Saturn’s rings then cut small notches out of the middle edges of Saturn and push the rings into them. Solar System Model Tip: If you want to make them a little extra sturdy, try laminating them! Make a Hanging Frame for Your Planet Mobile In Astrology, it is very important to know when the planets are in retrograde, and also when they stop and start to move forwards again (called the Stationary Direct) because it is believed that this motion can reverse and enhance the effect of the planet. For Astronomy, retrograde motions have no importance since they are simply the result of the motions of the planets relative to Earth. Future Developments The visuals are remarkable and unconsciously teaches the kids how our solar system looks like. Since the puzzles are sturdy paper material-made, they will last longer for a prolonged learning experience.
