About this deal

If that sounds like a lot, well, the A40 isn’t for you. Astro A40 TR + MixAmp Pro TR – Gaming Performance

Once the “Get” becomes “Launch” hit the “Launch button to launch the ASTRO Command Center software. Update 02/23/2021: Some users have reported that their headphones' sound profile changed when used wired via USB on the Xbox Series X|S after firmware update 36797. While we don't run sound testing on consoles, we did a subjective sweep to compare audio quality when connected to a PC via USB and the Xbox Series X via USB. We noticed that audio sounded tighter and sharper on the PC, while audio from the Xbox was more bass-heavy. Unfortunately, we don't have a measurement of the Xbox's audio pre-firmware update to compare it to.The software will not detect any other ASTRO Gaming products prior to the generations of products mentioned above, and is not compatible with the C40 TR Controller Or A20 Wireless Headsets. The A40's microphone sounds excellent. Test recordings were clean and warm, neither sounding fuzzy nor overly sibilant. This is a very good headset microphone for voice chat, commentary, and even podcasting (though we recommend getting a dedicated USB microphone if you're serious about audio recording). Those EQ profiles are easily switched between with the tap of a button, but they’re not all created equal. Astro is a bass-heavy option, Natural Bass is entirely neutral (flat), Balanced is—ironically— not balanced, favoring highs and mids, and Tournament does the same while also punching bass through the roof. Ultimately, each game will beg for a different EQ—though I’d be amazed if most people ever use Natural Bass. I also wish Astro would put more effort into its built-in controls. Astro’s very own wireless A50 is a model I wish other companies would emulate, with Game/Chat mixing (or chat-mix), volume, EQ, mute, and Dolby all easily accessible and relatively intuitive. But on the A40? There’s a mute toggle on the cable and that’s it—not even a volume wheel. Mix it up All current ASTRO Gaming products designed for Xbox will offer continuous compatibility on Xbox: Series X|S.

That last point is very specific, sure, but let me reiterate for my other bearded readers: The A40’s earcups are a minor miracle. Like all A40s, these are quite comfortable. I didn’t experience any head fatigue, no matter how long I was playing, and I have a seven 5/8ths head. Astro A40 TR + MixAmp Pro TR – Gaming Software The Windows 10 version ASTRO Command Center software, from the Microsoft Store, enables full configuration of the adjustable settings for these ASTRO devices: The MixAmp is where Astro’s undertaken the bulk of this fourth-generation redesign. The previous MixAmp was oriented vertically, with one enormous volume dial over the smaller one for chat-mix.

The main feature on display here is the MixAmp Pro TR, which boasts new features to go with its entirely new design. For those unfamiliar, the MixAmp is a small mixer that allows you to change volume, flip between EQ presets, and adjust the game and voice balance of your mix on the fly. It’s been a significant boon to pro gamers and streamers, and has helped cement Astro’s place in the esports scene. At just 13 ounces without the cable, the A40 is slightly lighter than the previous version, and remarkably lighter than most other high-end headsets we've tested in general. The result is a comfortable fit that won't weigh your head down. Connection and MixAmp Users have reported significant issues using Astro Command Center. As a result, we have lowered the App Support score from '7.5' to '6.0' and added information regarding the issue to this box.
