Lijjat received the "Best Village Industries Institution" award from KVIC for the period 1998–99 to 2000–01. [22] In 2002, the "Businesswoman of the Year" award was given to "The Women Behind Lijjat Papad" at The Economic Times Awards for Corporate Excellence. [23] At the awards ceremony, the President of Lijjat urged the State Governments of Maharashtra and Punjab to reconsider their decision of withdrawing the tax exemption on Lijjat's Sasa Detergent. But do you know what? When these women had their first board meeting, they established the fact that the primary goal of their business wouldn’t be to make money, but to empower women from the smallest households in the country, and to provide them with the livelihood to nurture their families. Lijatt has blazed a trail for cooperative business models that are also professional, ethical and economically sound. In the process, the women’s organization has created generations of employees who are not just self-sufficient; they are also enriching their own lives and those of others in their communities.

On 16th December 2011 Khambatta Lifetime Achievement Award for 2010 was conferred on Smt. Swati R. Paradkar, President of Shri Mahila Griha Udyog Lijjat Papad by All India Food Processor's Association, New Delhi. The Award was presented by Shri Harish Rawat, Hon'ble Minister of State for Agriculture & Food Processing Industries Government of India at New Delhi. Sisters at the organization, moreover, not only ensure personal hygiene when preparing food products; they also make sure that all work surfaces are kept to established standards of cleanliness. As part of its quality assurance, Lijjat has maintained tried and tested traditional manufacturing and production methods based on handmade goods. On 18th June 2019 President of our Institution Smt. Swati R. Paradkar was conferred the 'Anita Parikh Empowerment of Women Award' for the year 2018-2019 by The Rotary Club of Mumbai at a function held at Taj Mahal, Mumbai. The Award was presented by Shri Vijay Kumar Jatia, President of Rotary Club, Mumbai.
In addition to being recognized as a leader in women’s empowerment, Lijjat was praised for its brand development strategy through a “Brand Equity Award” (2005), presented by the Progress, Harmony and Development Chamber of Commerce and Industry, an etablished business consultancy based in New Delhi, India. The expansion of the Lijjat is frequently observed in the broader context of women’s emancipation. The charity has made a number of attempts to encourage member-sisters and their families to pursue computer and literacy education. On June 18, 1999, literacy courses at Girgaum launched a campaign for sisters. Lijjat' provides scholarships to the children of the sister members who pass out in 10th and 12th standard examinations every year so as to enable the Lady Members to encourage their children for education. Looking at the acceptance of their product in the market, the ‘seven sisters’ borrowed money from Chhaganlal Karamsi Parekh, who also became their mentor. Fondly known as ‘Chhagan Bappa’, he was a noted social worker who served in multiple relief operations, including the earthquakes in Assam and Kutch in the 1950s.Later, the bunny character got so famous that Padhye couldn’t stop getting calls for ad shoots. The movement started by Shri Mahila Griha Udyog Lijjat Papad (SMGULP), represents the true strength of Indian women. The women, who are a part of Lijjat, weren’t literate before, but now they know the importance of education, especially of their children. This in itself is a big development,” says eminent scientist Raghunath Mashelkar. Lijjat was started by seven Gujarati women from Mumbai. The women lived in Lohana Niwas, a group of five buildings in Girgaum. They wanted to start a venture to create a sustainable livelihood using the only skill they had i.e. cooking. The seven women were Jaswantiben Jamnadas Popat, Parvatiben Ramdas Thodani, Ujamben Narandas Kundalia, Banuben. N. Tanna, Laguben Amritlal Gokani, Jayaben V. Vithalani, and Diwaliben Lukka. [5] [6] Here’s the most mind-blowing fact of all. In its 62 years of existence, not a single time has Lijjat Papad ever deviated from its core values. Last but not least, a key element of the organization’s development was to ensure an all-woman membership. The only male workers at Lijjat are employed on a contractual basis for specialized roles. This process happens only in Vashi and Nasik. The mix of hing and pepper powder is added to the flour and saltwater is prepared in the final step. After this, dough is prepared and distributed among the employees. Everyone is given a standard base and rolling pin to ensure the equal size of papads from every region.Lijjat’s success story is all set to play out in a movie directed by Ashutosh Gowarikar. Karram Kurram is named after the brand’s iconic 1990s jingle, which featured their one-time mascot, a pink puppet bunny. But as Swati Paradkar, the co-operative’s president knows, it’s not the bottomline that’s the highlight, it’s the long-running operation itself. “It gives women the flexibility to carry out their household chores and look after their children while also working and earning,” says Paradkar. [25] Exports [ edit ] In 17 Indian states, there are 82 branches of the Lijjat Papad Company. Currently, Lijjat Papad exports its goods with the aid of merchant exporters. They export their goods to over 25 nations, including the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, countries in the Middle East, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Japan, Canada, Australia, and South Africa, among many others. In the same period, the organization was recognized for its work with women via an award for “Businesswomen of the Year for Corporate Excellence” (2002), given by the Economic Times, an established business publication in the country. In addition to instituting quality in its production processes, the cooperative has branded itself within the niche market of enterprises that are run by women for the empowerment of women. As a result, Lijjat prioritizes the financial and social welfare of a sector of producers that have traditionally been at the margins of the Indian economy – low income but skilled female workers. of India’s population was below the poverty line, and earning capacity of families was not enough to afford a decent standard of living.
