With Agfa Vista Plus 200 being discontinued and FujiFilm slowly reducing their offerings too, ColorPlus might be the future of cheap and low ISO colour film. The following five shots are from the Yashica Electro 35 GSN. As you can see, the day was sunnier than for the previous three example shots.

Kodak ColorPlus 200 is an ISO 200, 5500k daylight balanced, colour negative 35mm film that’s available in rolls of 24 or 36 exposures. It’s DX coded and is developed using the common C-41 process.As the cost of film continues to rise, most photographers are more price-conscious than ever before. Which makes the price of Colorplus its biggest selling point. Gold 200‘s popularity stems from its remarkably balanced imaging characteristics. It has just the right amount of grain, is sharp without being clinically sharp, its colors are vibrant but not gaudy, and its speed is just right for an afternoon photo walk. It performs admirably for anybody’s general photography, and in experienced hands it can produce some seriously beautiful images.

This warmness I keep mentioning gives an effortless and unmistakably vintage quality. That sounds like a redundant thing to say when talking about a camera film, but hear me out. And as with every other type of film, taste is completely subjective. This was proven to be true when a recent Reddit thread asked a similar question: if you had to choose between Colorplus 200 and Gold 200 to regularly shoot, which would you choose?The 200 ISO rating isn’t the fastest, and you do have Kodak Ultramax 400 if you need more speed, but I like to shoot in the kind of light where 200 is enough anyway. When I did so, the grain and contrast in the results were all good.

For this reason, we usually reserve Kodak Colorplus 200 for shooting on bright, sunny days. If you need an all-purpose film that can handle a variety of lighting situations, there are better options, like Kodak Ultramax 400. Instead of saving the best for last, I decided to start this series with my favorite film. Maybe it’s my favorite because it was the first film I ever tried, maybe it’s because of its relatively cheap price, or maybe because it renders colors so well. Whatever the reason, Kodak ColorPlus is my go-to color film. The subheading of this section – what is Kodak ColorPlus 200? – is perhaps more pertinent than you realise. The Kodak Gold is a 200 ISO film, which means that it captures images with a slow film speed. 200 ISO cameras are suitable for bright daylight and well-lit indoor shots. Without a doubt, the Kodak Gold 200 is one of the best 35mm films in the 200 ISO range. If you want to shoot in low light, inside, or during the evenings, this low-speed film isn’t for you. Our recommendation for a higher ISO film is the Kodak Ultramax 400 (but be prepared for the jump in cost, too!). Bright Saturated Colours

Colorplus 200 is arguably the oldest color film offered by Kodak, descending from a line of films called “Kodacolor” that was released in the 1970s. Kodacolor was offered in a variety of sizes and film speeds. If you grew up between the 1980s and early 2000s, chances are you’ve either shot or had your picture taken with Kodak Gold 200. This mid-speed film has been a favorite of consumers and adventurous professionals alike, mostly for its tendency to punch above its weight when it comes to image quality. We’ve even heard people compare Kodak Color Plus 200 to the ever-popular Portra 400. While this might be a bit of a stretch, we can see where they’re coming from. Images made on Eastman Double X tend to have a gritty, stark overall tone. Under controlled lighting and with precise exposure and filter usage this film can exhibit the smooth, beautiful midtones it was formulated for, but in high contrast situations this film easily takes shadows and highlights right to the edge, crushing shadows and blowing highlights left and right. It’s not a film for every situation, but rewards discretion and meticulous shooting with contrasty, beautiful images.
