About this deal

Pro-Kleen’s Iron Sulphate is the perfect product to use to transform your lawn. It promotes greener and healthier grass – perfect for lawns that need some TLC. Our iron sulphate is an iron-rich, long-lasting fertiliser that encourages your grass to grow a healthy dark green to keep your lawn looking its best, all year round. 3-in-1 Formula for Unbeatable Results It is rare for soils other than poor sandy soils to be deficient in these elements. Of them all, iron is perhaps the main one that you will add in the form of iron or ferrous sulphate (also contained in Lawnsmith Winter Green). This is beneficial as a green-up or as a cool weather turf hardener; toughening the plant to resist disease. It is also the best way to get rid of moss which we will discuss in the topic ‘getting rid of moss’. You can also add large amounts of water to your grass to wash away excessive iron sulphate. This will reduce iron levels in the soil and restore your lawn’s health. Some gardeners may put a moss killer down like Iron sulphate before scarifying. It depends on just how mossy or bouncy your lawn is! I tend not to use it and save such treatments only for the worst mossy lawn offenders.

Total Lawn Moss Killer contains 12% iron sulphate, and this is a standard concentration for killing moss in lawns, although I have used 20% concentrations before. You can mow the scarified lawn about 2-3 weeks after scarification. Keep the setting high to help encourage new growth. Iron powders can leave unsightly, brown or rusty-looking stains on clothes and shoes. After applying, you should see improvements in the appearance of your lawn within a couple of days, but it can still stain for up to seven days. Organic iron fertilizer is comprised of organic iron sources, such as those found in Greensand and Milorganite. These break down more slowly but are healthier for your lawn in the long term. The iron in them also has natural chelation, which makes it easier for your grass to absorb. If your lawn doesn’t get enough sunlight, trim tree branches around it for more direct sunlight. Feed your lawn regularly and keep the grass healthy to encourage deep rooting. Also, improve soil drainage and compaction. For the best results, make sure you evenly apply the iron sulphate solution across your whole lawn. To help with this, we recommend dividing large gardens up into smaller square patches to help you precisely measure the amounts needed. How Much Iron Sulphate Should I Mix? In short, when using iron sulphate, we recommend that you wear gloves when mixing and applying, keep children and pets off treated areas for at least 4 days, use care to ensure only grass and lawn areas are sprayed, and always water treated areas well to ensure sulphate does not damage grass. Always follow the instructions for how to apply your particular moss killer. The instructions will say either “dry” application or “wet” application or give you a choice of these methods. Wear old clothes or overalls as iron will stain them too. Wash them separately, as they may stain other clothing if washed together. Use 2g to 3g per litre of water per square metre for turf hardening (200 to 300g for 100 square metres)

This is a slowly Like you would do if you were mowing the lawn. Going from edge to edge slowly. Ensuring you empty the collection bin as soon as it is full. You may be surprised by how much comes out! Secondly, you will then have to calculate the area you want to treat. Because you get a better coverage using a sprayer than you do with a watering can you will want to calculate the area to be treated. Then you should calculate how much area you cover with your sprayer. You will need a spreader, so if you don’t possess one, we suggest you get one. It will make the process a whole lot easier and keep your grass from burning because too much product spread in one area leaves the lawn with unsightly bald patches. If you’re not experienced, we don’t recommend spreading by hand. A lawn spreader is a must. Pros If you are using iron sulphate for turf hardening, you can use 2 to 3 grams per litre of water per square metre. This is ideal for sports pitches and golf courses.

Some people do not like the feel of it, others do not like the iron ‘smell’ from it. It is unlikely to cause any health issues unless you swallow several grams of it or get it into your eyes. If swallowed then seek medical advice. If in your eyes then rinse thoroughly, and if necessary seek medical advice. Adding lime to the soil will help to neutralise the acidic iron. But if you have the pure stuff, you can mix it with sand or dissolve it in water. Mixing with sand Next, follow these simple moss treatment methods in spring and autumn for optimal results: Spring moss treatment: Iron Sulphate is often used in the late autumn through to spring period to suppress WORM CASTS on the lawn, particularly if it is a very wet autumn. If you look closely at the lawn you will notice small mounds of slimy soil on the surface of the lawn, these are the worm casts that mean your lawn can become muddy and slippery and difficult to mow.

Inadequate nutrientsfor the grass to feed on make lawns weak and unable to fight. Because moss is rather persistent, it is better if your soil is enriched to give the grass a fighting chance. Regular aeration, reseeding and fertilising are required. Applying lime to your lawn can help solve the acidity problem. It will increase the soil pH and even out the iron levels. What’s more, lime will also add other nutrients like calcium and magnesium to the soil. Without additional help, it’s unlikely that your soil contains enough iron to maximise the growth and vitality of your lawn. What’s the difference between iron sulphate and ferrous sulphate?
