About this deal

The cutting edge has a Scandi grind for superior sharpness and is easy to resharpen. A protective electrophoretic deposition coating (EPD) for best rust protection. The OK4 is a durable outdoor knife with friction grip suitable for tough tasks in the field. The blade has a scandi grind and is made from Japanese knife steel, 3.0 mm carbon steel that has been hardened to 58–60 HRC and has a rust protective electrophoretic deposition coating to withstand corrosion. The ground spine of the blade is designed for starting a fire with a fire starter. It is a little short on the blade when compared to a lot of the knives favoured by members here but I rarely use anything more then 3-4" Learn more about the Outdoor Knife OK4 Japanese steel and a scandinavian grind for longlasting sharpness There are three series of knives from Hultafors that are of interest to someone doing bushcrafty stuff. The lightest and thinnest one is the Craftsman, the typical competition to the Mora Clipper or Companion. It has a slim and fairly thin blade that is very useful for carving and finer work - and it’s still made of SK5 tool steel. The basic Craftsman with a hard plastic handle goes for about 5 euros, the ‘luxury’ HVK-GH version with a grooved rubberized handle costs about 7 euros.

This blade is too short for any serious work" - Meaningless unless specifing what is meant by "serious work". But I'm gonna jump to conclusions and advice Rambo to get an axe or machete to complement his belt knife. None of the cucumber slices exploded away into the kitchen. The front half with that pronounced belly curve is better at food tasks that one would expect.

The Hultafors knives cut better than comparable Moras not just because of the slightly better steel, but because they have a different geometry. The sheath retains the GK very well and shows no intention of getting loose over time. It protects the knife well enough - and the user against the blade, which is vital, and for this price everything else is a bonus. There is a drain hole in the bottom and it has a thumb rest. Oproti jiným křesadlům se jedná o tlustý a dlouhý kus oceli, který dlouho vydrží. (po odříznutí poutka použijete i druhou stranu)No beating with a steel hammer in my case, but a fair bit of hitting it with wooden batons. I used it pretty rough in the yard, in dirt, sand, earth, bark, hardwood and softwood. I also tested it on fruit, cucumbers and tomatoes and measured its edge angles. When the wood burner needed some kindling I split that from scrap pine siding with the GK, which it does very well. Cutting bale twine and zip ties, opening bags of animal fodder, light delimbing and murdering cardboard boxes are also in its job description. As is a lot of scraping. Or cutting bundles of high grass, often wet, for our donkeys. Ever since Hultafors started making knives, we have strived to offer unique solutions to match specific needs in various crafts. Bushcraft is no exception. When discovering that our craftsmen’s knives had become favorites with the outdoor crowd as well – we got inspired to develop knives especially suited to their needs. The result is a range of knives dedicated to bushcraft and outdoor life. Outdoor Knife OK1 - For tough tasks in the field I have been using it almost daily now for a bit over 3 months, so no box opening review here. Rather a 'long first impression'.

Like many of us, I have several Moras around the place, hanging on nails, sitting in car trunks and so on, being the best-known and widely available decent budget fixed-bladed knives. Broušený hřbet čepele můžete využít při rozdělávání ohně s pomocí křesadla a na čepeli vygravírované měřítko můžete zase využít při orientačním měření vzdáleností na mapě. this cheap piece of crap is not what I expected from Hultafors" - Funny, cheap knives is exactly what most people expect from Hultafors, and that they come with the functionality and quality of knives 10x their price. That's why people like them, same reason as Mora. I'm really impressed with the feel and quality of this knife. Feels great in the hand and cuts well. For the price it's an absolute bargain. Comes with a nice stealth and belt loop. Zero Scandi grind shouldn't mean, no scandi at all, took an hour on a course diamond stone to get an apoex.Nůž je v podstatě nezničitelný díky rukojeti z odolného plastu PP v kombinaci s 82 mm dlouhou stopkou zasahující do ¾ rukojeti. The cutting edge has a scandi grind for superior sharpness and is easy to re-sharpen. A protective electrophoretic deposition coating (EPD) for best rust protection.

But Mora have competition. From Hultafors, also in Sweden. Hultafors makes all kind of tools and is part of an industrial group that also sells safety gear and workwear - overalls, bibs, equipment vests and so on - on which you’ll find the typical Swedish buttons that you can hang knives in plastic sheaths on. They also invented the folding carpenter’s rule a very long time ago. Fit and finish is the clear weakness of the Hultafors OK4. There is a 1.5 inch gouge on the spine of this particular example reviewed here. This is not a flaw unique to this knife as it is seen on other OK4’s found online. After considerable testing, I feel confident that this is not a structural defect. However, it is a major and unsightly flaw that I am surprised made it past quality control. A second smaller issue is noticeable injection mold seams on the hard green plastic sections of the handle. The Hultafors OK4 Expedition knife is a solid light weight outdoors knife with a fantastic handle and a few flaws. If you want a capable and comfortable tool that will not weigh you down on a long hike this stands among the best budget Nordic style knives on the market. The GK has not gone really blunt on me yet, btw, nor has it suffered damage from things like unfortunately hitting an embedded nail in a former fence pole log I was debarking. Hultafors has its knives made in Taiwan, using Japanese steel. The GK is made of SK5. It’s a good, tough, midrange high-carbon tool steel that one also finds in for instance the Cold Steel SRK; 1080 with whiffs of alloying elements sprinkled in. It can of course rust, just a tad slower than a non-alloyed carbon steel like 1095. Clean and dry the blade at the end of a work session, wipe it with a cloth stiff with old linseed oil and you’ll have no rust problem. I assume it will get a patina over time but have not seen it yet. It is not highly polished, more brushed and that fits the rough function of the blade fine. The finish of the spine is rough, but it scrapes fairly well - good enough for construction work. I filed mine a bit to make it sharper and cleaned the rim at a very shallow angle with a stone, like a microbevel on the spine. Better on naked thumbs like that.
