About this deal

Guinevere appears in the 2011 television series Once Upon a Time, played by actress Joana Metrass [ pt]. This version of Guinevere is portrayed with a noticeable Castilian accent. She was stated by production in this adaptation to be Lancelot's true love while being deceived and manipulated into continuing her marriage with Arthur by a "fixing" spell that "fixed" all the problems between the two, inadvertently making her forget her love for Lancelot. Thomas, Neil (2002). Diu Crône and the medieval Arthurian cycle. D.S. Brewer. ISBN 978-0-85991-636-3. Gwen’s mother was a maid in Sir Leon’s household and Gwen and Leon grew up together. Though they saw little of each other as adults, due to Leon being a knight and Gwen being a servant, she broke Leon out of prison and helped him escape Camelot when Morgana was queen. Guinevere was described as very beautiful by legends. She used to show a very admirable attitude. She always cared for her fellow Knights and motivated them to inculcate deep moral values. She was also loved by all for her sentimental feelings towards one and all. Queen Guinevere Bruce, Christopher W. (21 March 1999). The Arthurian Name Dictionary. Taylor & Francis. ISBN 9780815328650– via Google Books.Guinevere plays a significant role in many other Arthurian works than those mentioned here and has continued to fascinate readers for centuries. The English poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809-1892 CE) revived the Arthurian Legend with his Idylls of the King in 1859 CE and portrays Guinevere as a fallen woman who recognizes her failings and his forgiven by her lord. Tennyson's Guinevere reflects the values of the Victorian Age he was writing in, and every writer since then has followed this same paradigm. Even a cursory knowledge of how Guinevere has been portrayed in film over just the past 50 years shows how she is constantly re-imagined to fit the values of the time while the other characters in the legends remain more or less the same. Kibler, William W., The Romance of Arthur, New York & London, Garland Publishing, Inc. 1994 p. 121. A long time later, Morgana enchanted Gwen so that she would fall in love with the Lancelot, whom Morgana had resurrected after his death, to prevent Guinevere from becoming queen. Gaius believed that Morgana couldn't stand the thought of a serving girl taking what Morgana believed was her rightful place on the throne. Gwen met Morgana in the woods whilst travelling to Camelot to warn them that Morgana and Helios were raising an army, and her former friend turned her into a doe so that she would be hunted by Arthur and his men. Fortunately Merlin recognised her and Arthur found her engagement ring so Gwen survived the incident, albeit with an injured leg. Gwen eventually dueled Morgana in Camelot, and asked her why she hated her so much. Morgana seemed remorseful about what had happened the their relationship and actually apologised to Gwen but felt that she had to die so that Morgana could become queen. Morgana disarmed Gwen and pointed her sword at her throat but hesitated just long enough for Merlin to rescue her before Morgana could strike the fatal blow. However she may have felt toward her marriage, Guinevere is all courtesy and grace. Norris J. Lacy comments: Three years after becoming Queen, Gwen was present at Arthur's coronation anniversary dinner. Seeing that her husband was upset, she asked him if he was all right and he told her he was and kissed her on the cheek. After Arthur blew the Horn of Cathbhadh to see the spirit of his father, Uther criticised Arthur's decision to marry Gwen and make her queen. While Arthur defended his wife and said that he chose love over matters of state, Uther became angry and when his spirit was released, Gwen, in Uther's rage, became one of Uther's victims and he tried to burn Gwen alive.
