Colours are super-vibrant without losing accuracy – I measured an average Delta-E of just 2.69 – so you’re covered for creative work as well as entertainment. This is one of the finest screens I’ve seen on any games machine. With PCIe Gen4x4 SSD storage and up to 32GB of 4800MHz DDR5 RAM, you can store large game libraries and multitask like a pro.

Game. Stream. Create.

We’ll know more about the performance of these news specs in these updated implementations once we get to review the 2023 Scars, somewhere in the next few weeks. We’ll also carefully look into the thermals and noise levels of these designs, on the various power profiles offered in Armoury Crate. When you need to plug into the big screen, the dedicated GPU powers an HDMI 2.1 port for the latest TVs and monitors, increasing total bandwidth from 18 to 48Gbps, and supporting up to 4K 120Hz and 8K 60Hz content. Two USB Type-C ports allow for plenty of connectivity—one for DisplayPort and power delivery, and a second with Thunderbolt 4 support. Wireless options abound in this Strix machine, with both Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 for connecting to networks and peripherals. These are the same power profiles as on the Scar 18, but the fans run a little quieter at max rpms on Manual mode (52 dBA vs 53 dBA), most likely because the GPU fan is smaller on this 16-inch model.

There’s no denying the essential excellence of the Asus ROG Strix Scar 16. It’s stunningly fast when it comes to both games and productivity, the display is superb, as is the sound system, and it comes loaded with all the extras and refinements you could ask for from a top-tier gaming laptop. The 2023 Strix SCAR 16 continues to embody the distinct style of ROG. With sharp chassis designs, unique RGB accents, and a distinct gaming vibe, a Strix laptop will always stand out from the crowd. New for 2022, the Strix SCAR features a rear glow RGB panel, which paired together with per-key RGB illumination on the keyboard and the light bar make the laptop a beacon of gaming power from any angle. This generation of the ROG Scar is undoubtedly much more powerful than the previous Scar 15, and better cooled as well, thanks to the updated thermal module. To further measure GPU performance, we also run two tests from the cross-platform GPU benchmark GFXBench 5, which stresses both low-level routines like texturing and high-level, game-like image rendering. The 1440p Aztec Ruins and 1080p Car Chase tests, which are rendered offscreen to accommodate different display resolutions, exercise graphics and compute shaders using the OpenGL programming interface and hardware tessellation respectively. The more frames per second (fps), the better.

Both the Zephyrus and Scar use the same 90Wh battery so, unsurprisingly, returned pretty similar figures in our run-down test: we loop an SD video using VLC with the screen brightness turned down to 170cd/m² until the lights go out. The Scar 16 actually did slightly better than the Zephyrus, running for 5hrs 27mins compared with 5hrs 13mins. Here’s how this 2023 Scar 16 performs on the Performance profile, which limits the fans to around 42 dB at head level. The SCAR 16 can also be equipped with a QHD+ 240Hz Nebula HDR Display, offering fantastic colour, Dolby Vision, Adaptive-Sync support, and an 89% screen-to-body ratio for a stellar gaming and viewing experience. Update: I’ve updated the preliminary rating of this laptop to 4.25, as a result of the very high CPU/GPU internal temperatures measured in our gaming and high-load tests. You should consider these in your decision, especially if you’re living in a warmer place. In comparison, other laptops such as the Alienware m16 or the larger ROG Scar 18 run cooler in sustained loads and gaming sessions. The laptop boasts the exclusive MSI OverBoost Ultra technology, enabling maximum performance for the CPU and GPU.

For gamers who demand the absolute best motion and image clarity, the SCAR 16 offers an incredible Mini LED Nebula HDR panel with a 240Hz refresh rate, 100% DCI-P3 coverage, and a staggering 1100 nits of peak brightness for stunning HDR gameplay. The 16-inch, 16:10 aspect ratio panel with an 90% screen-to-body ratio is perfect for fast moving arena shooters and other frenetic games. The SCAR 16 can also be equipped with a Full HD 165Hz panel. No matter what kind of gamer you are, the SCAR’s new 16-inch panel is sure to impress. The laptop also features an 18-inch WQXGA IPS display with a resolution of 2560 x 1600, offering an immersive gaming experience. The extra-realistic visuals and crystal-clear pixels allow you to identify even the slightest details in your game, from the footsteps of your opponents to the hidden objects in the game arena. W (~5-6 h of use) – 1080p fullscreen video on Youtube in Edge, Silent Mode, screen at 60%, WiFi ON; The audio quality here is pretty good for laptop speakers, with two main speakers firing on the bottom and extra tweeters firing through the grills under the display. I’ll also add that this Scar generation still implements a system of 4x speakers (two under the screen, two on the bottom) and no biometrics: no IR camera and no finger sensor.

Our review unit is a powerful configuration with the Intel Core i9-13980HX processor, Nvidia RTX 4080 Laptop 175W dGPU, and a mini LED display. You can also opt for the 4090 on this series, if your budget allows it, and we’ll discuss the performance differences between the two GPUs in the article.Just a few weeks ago we saw the ROG Zephyrus M16 with its 13th-gen Core i9 CPU, RTX 4090 GPU and beautiful 16-inch screen. Now we have the ROG Strix Scar 16 with an even faster 13th gen Core i9, RTX 4080 and an equally stunning 16-inch screen. With an Intel Core i9 13th Gen. processor and 32 GB of RAM, this laptop is built to handle the most demanding games and applications with ease. Moreover, this is also the perfect device for all the multitaskers who want to get more done in less time. Here’s what we got in our tests of this panel with single-zone lighting, with an X-Rite i1 Display Pro sensor:
