About this deal

Straight from the store, you can use this tool and most people will appreciate its sharpness. We tested it by lopping off some small branches and splitting some small pine rounds. It delivers deep, clean cuts and holds its edge well. This axe can split larger hardwood if you’re in a pinch, but it’ll take plenty of swinging. I only recently learned about the Prandi company and I’ve taken a liking to them. They’re making a good entrance into the US market by selling their high-quality axes at affordable prices. I decided to do a test for the sake of this review. The test was to run the axe over and see if I could break the handle. Accidentally running over your hatchet isn’t too far-fetched. It’s bound to happen to someone. It’s no joke: This tool is svelte! That’s due in large part to its hollow handle, which helps trip this ax’s weight to just about 1.5 pounds. The Fiskars X7 is versatile, excelling in tasks ranging from splitting small logs to clearing branches. Its innovative design, featuring a low-friction blade coating and a perfected blade geometry, enhances cutting performance while minimizing effort.

The two types of Fiskars axe types are chopping and splitting, and they look almost identical – but they are different. The actual X10 doesn’t seem to be sold in North America, just the Gerber branded Freescape 17.5. These axes are identical ( again Gerber is owned by Fiskars). If you need a splitting axe, I suggest you switch to this article: Which Fiskars Splitting Axe is Right For You. It gets more in depth on those models.

Fiskars X7 Specifications

The unique blade geometry will cut deep into green or dry wood before splitting clean through with one swing and uses the extra weight to gain momentum. The sturdy shaft and 3D grip help you get a really good handhold, and the balance is machine perfect. Another unique feature of the Fiskars X7 hatchet is its hollow handle. At only 14” in length, this makes for a light tool that anyone can swing. The hatchet from Prandi is another remarkable buy in terms of quality and price. It’s similar in comparison to the Husqvarna but it has a different head pattern and it costs a little more. Originally, I thought the X11 was going to be a no brainer – but after a summer of testing I found I kept wanting to use the X7. You can find countless posts online about this particular hatchet. Many of which have something to do with the steel Fiskars uses and what the edge retention is like. People have claimed to spend well over 30 minutes working the edge only to get it “reasonably sharp”. O

Of course, if it does get broken you won’t be able to fix it. That means survivalists may want to choose a more traditional hatchet with a wood handle.

Performance

So, remember when I said Husqvarna buys the heads of their hatchets from a Swedish company? I think Hults Bruk might be that company. I can’t find an official source that confirms this but it’s plausible. Also, by creating a loop on the handle you’re effectively giving yourself a great means of hanging the hatchet where you want it. It’s always good to know exactly where your tool is when you’re not using it. Is it Worth the Money? For splitting small logs and firewood, any of the Fiskars splitting axes will do the job. For bigger logs and actual tree trunk sections, you will want either the X25 or the X27 extra large and XXL splitting axes which allow you to use both hands to get a full overhead swing. These axes are amazing for large pieces of wood or for felling large trees, as they offer the most power. Which Fiskars Axe is Best for Chopping Wood? So if size and weight are the most important factors – then this is a capable little hatchet. But I would go for the X7 if possible. I would get the X7. I was originally skeptical but the over-mold does make a difference, and the price is almost identical. Gerber Freescape 14
