The image of “feet setting out” reminds us once more of the perennial validity of the missio ad gentes, the mission entrusted to the Church by the risen Lord to evangelize all individuals and peoples, even to the ends of the earth. Today more than ever, our human family, wounded by so many situations of injustice, so many divisions and wars, is in need of the Good News of peace and salvation in Christ. I take this opportunity to reiterate that “everyone has the right to receive the Gospel. Christians have the duty to announce it without excluding anyone, not as one who imposes a new obligation, but as one who shares a joy, signals a beautiful horizon, offers a desirable banquet” (Evangelii Gaudium, 14). Missionary conversion remains the principal goal that we must set for ourselves as individuals and as a community, because “missionary outreach is paradigmatic for all the Church’s activity” (ibid., 15).

Pope Francis calls on the Church to embark on a fundamental change of direction when it comes to evangelisation, no longer relying on past structures and actions but to read the signs of the times and act passionately in proclaiming the unique message of the Gospel that brings joy to all people who receive it with an open heart. The fact that their hearts burned for the word of God prompted the disciples of Emmaus to ask the mysterious Wayfarer to stay with them as evening drew near. When they gathered around the table, their eyes were opened and they recognised him when he broke the bread. The decisive element that opened the eyes of the disciples was the sequence of actions performed by Jesus: he took the bread, blessed it, broke it and gave it to them. Those were the usual gestures of the head of a Jewish household, but, performed by Jesus Christ with the grace of the Holy Spirit, they renewed for his two table companions the sign of the multiplication of the loaves and above all that of the Eucharist, the sacrament of the sacrifice of the cross. Yet at the very moment when they recognised Jesus in the breaking of the bread, “he vanished from their sight” (Lk 24:31). Here we can recognise an essential reality of our faith: Christ, who breaks the bread, now becomes the bread broken, shared with the disciples and consumed by them. He is seen no longer, for now he has entered the hearts of the disciples, to make them burn all the more, and this prompts them to set out immediately to share with everyone their unique experience of meeting the Risen Lord. The risen Christ, then, is both the one who breaks the bread and, at the same time, the bread itself, broken for us. It follows that every missionary disciple is called to become, like Jesus and in him, through the working of the Holy Spirit, one who breaks the bread and one who is broken bread for the world. Quando abbiamo più bisogno di un dinamismo missionario che porti sale e luce al mondo, molti laici temono che qualcuno li inviti a realizzare qualche compito apostolico, e cercano di fuggire da qualsiasi impegno che possa togliere loro il tempo libero. Oggi, per esempio, è diventato molto difficile trovare catechisti preparati per le parrocchie e che perseverino nel loro compito per diversi anni. Ma qualcosa di simile accade con i sacerdoti, che si preoccupano con ossessione del loro tempo personale. Questo si deve frequentemente al fatto che le persone sentono il bisogno imperioso di preservare i loro spazi di autonomia, come se un compito di evangelizzazione fosse un veleno pericoloso invece che una gioiosa risposta all’amore di Dio che ci convoca alla missione e ci rende completi e fecondi. Alcuni fanno resistenza a provare fino in fondo il gusto della missione e rimangono avvolti in un’accidia paralizzante. 6. De-centrailization of the Papacy

Non si deve pensare che l’annuncio evangelico sia da trasmettere sempre con determinate formule stabilite, o con parole precise che esprimano un contenuto assolutamente invariabile. Si trasmette in forme così diverse che sarebbe impossibile descriverle o catalogarle, e nelle quali il Popolo di Dio, con i suoi innumerevoli gesti e segni, è soggetto collettivo. Di conseguenza, se il Vangelo si è incarnato in una cultura, non si comunica più solamente attraverso l’annuncio da persona a persona. Questo deve farci pensare che, in quei Paesi dove il cristianesimo è minoranza, oltre ad incoraggiare ciascun battezzato ad annunciare il Vangelo, le Chiese particolari devono promuovere attivamente forme, almeno iniziali, di inculturazione. Ciò a cui si deve tendere, in definitiva, è che la predicazione del Vangelo, espressa con categorie proprie della cultura in cui è annunciato, provochi una nuova sintesi con tale cultura. Benché questi processi siano sempre lenti, a volte la paura ci paralizza troppo. Se consentiamo ai dubbi e ai timori di soffocare qualsiasi audacia, può accadere che, al posto di essere creativi, semplicemente noi restiamo comodi senza provocare alcun avanzamento e, in tal caso, non saremo partecipi di processi storici con la nostra cooperazione, ma semplicemente spettatori di una sterile stagnazione della Chiesa. The Letter to the Hebrews presents a number of testimonies that encourage us to “run with perseverance the race that is set before us” (12:1). It speaks of Abraham, Sarah, Moses, Gideon and others (cf. 11:1-12:3). Above all, it invites us to realize that “a great cloud of witnesses” (12:1) impels us to advance constantly towards the goal. These witnesses may include our own mothers, grandmothers or other loved ones (cf. 2 Tim 1:5). Their lives may not always have been perfect, yet even amid their faults and failings they kept moving forward and proved pleasing to the Lord. The work of encounter and evangelisation is promoted through the Directorate for Mission. Through this directorate, the vision of the Holy Father is embraced in a fuller way and promotes the whole ideal of proclamation, evangelisation, dialogue and catechesis.
