Out for a lovely August evening walk, putting the Garmin Montana 700i through its paces on a 11-mile walk, the basics of GPS navigation. Not everything goes to plan! In this walk and talk I put the Garmin GPSMAP 66i through its paces in The Cheviot Hills.

We look at the good points and bad points of the Garmin Epix (Gen2) and compare it against the Garmin Fenix 7 GPS watch. Nothing beats navigating with a map and compass but sometimes for ease-of-use it’s much simpler to use the magnetic compass built into the Garmin eTrex 10. Before the switch I always used disposable batteries and in 2018 I changed the batteries twice. That’s not bad considering I used the GPS when I crossed Greenland and after hiking nearly every weekend of the year. After first planning a course on some free route planning software we transfer it to the Garmin Epix (Gen2) using the Garmin Connect App before following it. I think I’ve used it once in the whole time that I’ve owned this GPS. It’s not that the sunrise and sunset reports are inaccurate, simply that I have never needed this function. If it’s getting dark I go to sleep, if sunlight is prodding at my eyelids I wake up! Simple. Out of the box, the eTrex 10 units default to kilometres. I tend to leave this setting as-is. All the maps in my collection use km as the unit of measure. I like to kid myself that the engineers and designers of this device invoked some kind of dark, technical magic to create an incredibly tough device the shrugs off everything nature and careless hikers throw at it. The reality is much simpler: Garmin have kept it small, rugged and simple. The recently upgraded Garmin Instinct watch has some great new features so in this review I take it into the countryside and navigate with it.

In this walk and talk I take a Garmin Instinct GPS watch on a walk around Kielder Reservoir, Northumberland. This time I am heading out with the Garmin Oregon 700 Outdoor GPS unit and head up into the Cheviot Hills.
