About this deal

The song "It's Alright Kevin (Manhood 2023)" is a re-recorded version of the song "Manhood" which was released before on the 2003 compilation album Let's Make This Precious: The Best of Dexys Midnight Runners and on the live album At The Royal Court 2003. Dexys Midnight Runners released the aforementioned follow-up album Don't Stand Me Down in 1985; not only was it an about-face musically from Too-Rye-Ay, but the album’s cover presented the band members in business-like preppie attire. While it didn't fare well commercially compared to its predecessor, Don’t Stand Me Down has since garnered acclaim over time. “I think we've done that with every record,” Rowland explains about not following a musical formula. “The first one is completely different than the second one. We're still doing the same thing now. I literally do not repeat myself, I can't do it.”

A mildly "snarling" Kevin: “I dunno, what do you think? I don’t really think about that stuff, that’s intuitive. It’s for an audience to say or for a journalist to say. If you want me to do your job, I’ll charge you. Have you heard the new album?” I tell Kevin I have indeed heard the new album and I found it to be built upon a theatrical core, relevant to today with a nod to yesterday. You can hear the Celtic and soul influences they are famous for, but it is far more than that and in no way treading old ground. Dexys have grown up and this is a very mature album, with some great ideas within it. It’s basically Kev doing just what he wants to do, without having the pressure of having to chase singles radio plays. “That’s exactly what it was,” he says. So he’s a bit calmer now and we carry on…………….Dexys play the following UK and Ireland dates with a fan presale going on-sale April 12th and general sale from April 14th here. The band performed two new songs, "Manhood" and "If I Ever", on the UK Channel 4 TV show Saturday Zoo Having passed the audition and guested on several shows on the Let The Record Show tour, Helen has joined Kevin and Pete Schwier in mixing the new version of Too-Rye-Ay. “I call Helen ‘The Ministry Of Tuning’ as she’s got such good ears,” enthuses Rowland. The new version of the album will be released in September 2022. Archer (and Leek) eventually formed The Blue Ox Babes, while the other departing members—Blythe, Spooner, Williams, "Stoker", and Talbot—formed The Bureau, which Wingfield continued to produce.

After a hiatus that lasted from the mid-1980s through the 1990s, Rowland—who released a solo record, 1999’s My Beauty—revived Dexys in 2003 with a new personnel and put out One Day I'm Going to Soar (2012) and Let the Record Show: Dexys Do Irish and Country Soul (2016). Of late, Rowland has been on a creative roll after his retreat to Thailand. In 2022, he unveiled a new remix of Too-Rye-Ay on that album’s 40th anniversary because he was unhappy with the way the sound was done upon its original release. That shortly led to the recording of The Feminine Divine. Helen guested on Women Of Ireland for covers album Let The Record Show a few years later, having initially been persuaded to return to live music by Tanita Tikaram, also the last musician Helen had played with before her new life. O’Hara says her friendship with Kevin is based on honesty, citing the fact he made her audition for Women Of Ireland. The album entered the UK Official Albums Chart Top 100 at number 10 and remained there for one week. At the height of his fame he used to hide under a hat and dark glasses, but says he would always sign autographs if he was spotted. But he hated it. “I was getting to the stage where I just didn't want to be seen. I felt so conscious about people looking at me all the time, it just did me (sic) head in because I wasn’t feeling good about myself. When people are looking at you and staring at you, you think; what are you staring at, and it was doing my head in.

The tour when we had so many pop fans was an interesting experience. In Glasgow, girls grabbed us as we tried to get in the venue, pulling our hair. It got a bit dangerous, but that was fun in its own way.” During the late 1970s and early 1980s, Dexys went through numerous personnel changes over the course of three albums and 13 singles, with only singer/songwriter/co-founder Kevin Rowland remaining in the band through all of the transitions and only Rowland and "Big" Jim Paterson (trombone) appearing on all of the albums. By 1985, the band consisted only of Rowland and long-standing members Helen O'Hara (violin) and Billy Adams (guitar). The band broke up in 1987, with Rowland becoming a solo artist. After two failed restart attempts, Dexys was reformed by Rowland in 2003 with new members, as well as a few returning members from the band's original lineup (known as Dexys Mark I). Dexys released their fourth album in 2012 and a fifth followed in 2016.Of writing “Come On Eileen,” Rowland recalls: “It was about growing up with Irish Catholic girls in London and their sort of friends. Then you kind of reach puberty, and you'd like to get a bit more than friends. You're told that they're Catholic girls and all of that sort of stuff.”
