About this deal

Today we’ll cover everything you need to know about log books: what they look like, when you need them, how to get them, how to change their details, etc. There is tons of information to learn, so let’s get started! What is a vehicle log book (V5C) and what does it look like? If you spot any mistakes or some of the details change, you need to inform the DVLA. It actually makes the selling process and taxation safer and more reliable for all parties. What if you have a ringer on your hands? Think about this: Of the third of a million cars stolen each year in the UK, 120,000 are never recovered. So, be responsible and keep your car documentation updated. Driving lessons at night – if you have a driving lesson at night, the bonus hours do not count towards your ‘night driving hours’ in your log book. They can only count as daytime driving hours. Rather than expect them to produce a separate record sheet or printout for each day of the 3 weeks in which no in scope driving has taken place, the DVSA would accept a manual record made on a record sheet or printout paper which covers the period where they have not driven. Watermark - Hold up the log book to the light. You should see a “DVL” watermark (not “DVLA”) at the top left corner and at different other places on the document.

Along with other parts of the regulations in place before August 2020, the changes mean that all drivers (including occasional drivers) must keep a full set of records of their activities for the current day and the previous 28 days. The records must cover their: The National Driver Work Diary (also known as a log book) is evidence of a driver’s work and rest hours. It’s important to complete your work diary correctly and in accordance with the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL). Serial number - If it is between BG8229501 to BG9999030 or BI2305501 to BI2800000, call the police because the document might have been stolen.

The Practice drives weekly planner (PDF 83.5KB) is available to supervisors and learner drivers to help plan on-road driving practice. Local drivers do not need a driver’s log as long as they remain within 100 miles of their office. They are also exempt if they return to the office within twelve hours of leaving, even if they move outside the 100-mile radius. In the remarks section, you can write down statements explaining all of the activities you have done and where you were every time you changed your activity. Make sure to indicate the town or city and the state you’re in. Then indicate the nearest landmark to ensure the accuracy of your statement.

Drivers should never handle vehicles without enough rest. This can be a very dangerous thing. As a matter of fact, federal laws require tired drivers to stay off the road. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration attempts to ensure that drivers follow these rules by documenting their daily activity on a drivers daily log. The first is when the car is owned by the company and driven by an employee. Legally, the employee cannot own the corporate car. But the documentation should reflect who drives the car (obviously, it’s not a legal body). Second example If you’ll only drive your car on private land or keep it in the garage - i.e., keep it off public roads - it’s also something the DVLA needs to be informed of. You will receive the SORN document (Statutory Off-Road Notification). To pay a road tax for your vehicle, you need the reference number from your V5C, which must be in your name. You can apply: A transport manager does not drive for a period of 3 weeks but works in the office. Part way through the 4th week they have to drive a vehicle in-scope of the retained EU drivers’ hours rules.

The set domestic driving limits stipulate that drivers cannot be on duty for more than 11 hours and a maximum of 10 can be allocated for driving in a single day. The domestic rules for drivers do not set out a prescribed amount of time for rest, although employers are obliged to ensure that drivers have “adequate rest”. If you have an old reconstructed car that has never been registered with the DVLA, just apply for a new log book, not a replacement. Attach a V765 form signed, stamped, and approved by the relevant car enthusiasts club (for their make/type) from ‘List of Vehicle Owners Clubs’. How often should you update a V5C?
