About this deal

It’s made even more versatile by its three polar patterns (cardioid, omni and figure-eight); a -10dB pad, great for capturing louder sources, and a low-cut for curbing unwanted proximity induced low-mid boost while in either of the directional modes. Liability coverage covers damage caused by the aircraft, including passengers, while hull coverage covers damage to the aircraft itself. A real studio workhorse, AKG’s C414 comes in two modern editions, with the difference being capsule design. While the C414 XLS provides a flatter frequency response and is suited to a wide range of sources, the C414 XLII’s capsule design, based on the revered C12, introduces a 3kHz presence boost that’s particularly flattering for female vocalists.

A wide frequency range ensures you capture all nuances from your source as they were produced. This mic is designed to provide you with maximum transparency and linearity.Neumann has enjoyed a legendary reputation since the earliest days of the recording industry. While not a vintage microphone from the brand’s golden years, the TLM-102 large-diaphragm condenser microphone still fits in very well with the brand’s heritage both in quality and looks. Feature-wise, the mics are identical, sonically however the XLII features a very slight presence ‘boost’ in the capsule design above 3kHz that gives it a more airy and open top end - useful when miking vocals to capture a contemporary 'crisp' sound, or when miking instruments at a distance. Other than this slight EQ difference, the two mics are identical in features. As it is a highly sensitive microphone, it can also capture any studio noise. Therefore, if you don’t have a sound-treated room, this mic is not the right option for you.

Cessna made more room for roughly 410 lbs (185 kg) baggage and equipment such as avionics by fitting on the nose of the 421 onto the 414A to which made the aircraft longer. The longer fuselage now allowed for an eighth seat to be added as an option. Cessna Chancellor III (414A) Specifications Large diaphragm mics have the ability to be electrically quieter than small diaphragm models, because of the statistics relating to the interaction of individual air molecules with the diaphragm. The trade‑off is a greater degree of HF roll‑off as the capsule is used off‑axis, but as most large diaphragm mics are used on‑axis, and at fairly close range, this is rarely a disadvantage. In the case of the C3000, noise performance is defined mainly by the quality of the internal electronics, the equivalent A‑weighted input noise being 18dBA. Though this isn't as low as can be achieved by more rigorous preamp design, it is low enough to be insignificant for most typical applications. The maximum SPL that can be handled by the mic is around 140dB and a dynamic range of greater than 120dB is quoted. The supplied factory frequency response graphs are a close match for all four, the hypo-cardioid being the flattest and most consistant from mic to mic ... looks like less than 1dB variation, which is outstanding. So, IMHO, if you have several 414s, you can find a pair out of your inventory, for a particular pattern, that are well matched. However, almost all owners complain about the maintenance, and most say that the low acquisition cost of the aircraft will be offset by the cost of maintenance a few years down the line. The number of maintenance problems that can and do arise can cost a lot of money in a short time frame. One former owner even stated that anyone who says the aircraft is reliable is delusional.

Modern Day

Perhaps no other microphone engenders more disagreement from audio engineers. It is “too bright” or “too dark.” It is perfect for vocals or overheads or only usable on a guitar cabinet. How can these seemingly contradictory statements all be true? That requires a bit of explanation, since the C414 has gone through a lot of changes over its 50-year life span. The easiest way to examine the range is to look from the top down. The C414 XLII and XLS variants are the flagship mics in the range and feature the distinctive 414 shape, grille, and switch positions. The latest version of the mic was split into two models, the XL S and XLII which are easily identified by the colour of their grille as the latter XLII featur es a Gold grille .

Unfortunately, at over 10 inches in length, the C12 was perfect in the recording studio, but not such a great choice on TV, where audio engineers were trying to keep the microphone from being the center of attention. In the ’60s, AKG launched the more svelte C12A, which featured the distinctive diamond-shaped silhouette that would mark this line for the next 60 years. The aircraft has a remarkably high service ceiling of 30,800 ft (9387 m), but the normal operating range of a 414A is between 15,000 ft (4572 m) and FL250 (7,620 m). The fuel economy of the 414A depends on the altitude, conditions, and power setting, but the general specific fuel consumption is approximately 0.44 lbs/hp/hr. The engines were taken from the 402, with the only changes made to the setup were the inclusion of parts for bleed-air cabin pressurization, and different intercoolers. Each engine spun a constant speed, three-blade McCauley propeller. The 414A has a single-engine ceiling of 19,850 ft (6,050 m) which is the best among all its peers. However, single-engine performance at sea level is lower than the competition, with the aircraft only being able to climb 290 ft (88 m) per minute. AKG’s C414 has been a studio favourite for decades. Does this new, more affordable model hit the same spot?

A nice touch is that a small flange moulded onto the end of the mic prevents it sliding out of the clip when suspended upside down.
