About this deal

In South Asia, traditional kohl transcends surface-level beauty and is often used as a form of protection against the evil eye, a jealous gaze believed to cause fatalistic harm and injury. "Recently, I had a bride come to me for her makeup, and her mother told me to put a dot of kajal behind her ear [to ward off the evil eye]," says Syed Zubair, a Karachi-based makeup artist. One of the queens of ancient Egypt, where Kohl was popular, used to have a grounded Frankincense as a Kohl. In modern times, various chemicals are used to make eye liners and mascara products ,which are also a form of Kohl. Andreas Unger, a German philologist (someone who studies words and their development) explained to German media outlet Deutsche Welle (DW) that the English and German words for alcohol do come from the Arabic term “al-kuhl”. another English word derived from 'khul' - alcohol - originally referred to the powder of antimony and made its way into English via Middle Latin and French.

The 'ulama have written that due to these commands and practices it is sunnah to use kuhl , and it is better to use the one made from ithmid. If one uses kuhl made from any other substance it will be regarded as sunnah, but the virtue is obtained by using kuhl made of ithmid. In the Arabian Peninsula and the Fertile Crescent area, kohl has been used as a cosmetic from the dawn of civilization. When the Arabs in the 7th century migrated out of their desert homeland, they carried kohl with them and in the ensuing years it became known as a product of the Arabs. This is attested to by its name, kohl, from the Arabic kuhl – the origin of its name in most languages of the world. Other types of kohl (stuff applied to eyes and its hairs) only carry beauty benefits and ,contrary to promoting health as Ithmid (antimony) kohl does, often contain harmful substances. Is the use of surma for the eyes a sunnat. 2) If it is a sunnat, what is the sunnat times to put surma. 3) What is the sunnat way of putting surma in the eyes. 4) What are the bennifits of putting surma.

Ibn Abbas (ra) has related that the Holy Prophet [sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam] said, “Apply antimony regularly, as it clears the sight, makes the hair grow and is the best of things beautifying the eyes.” (Shamail-Tirmizi-Ibn Sa’d) Narrated by Ali Bin Abi Taalib, May Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet of Allah صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said : ( Use Ithmid for it is “Munbit” ( Grows) hair, removes “Al-Qada” (dirt, debris, germs etc), and acts as a “Masfah” (sieve, purifier, filter etc) for the vision). Drinking alcohol – especially drinking it excessively – has been shown to increase people’s risk of liver disease, high blood pressure, heart failure, several cancers, and other health issues. This has nothing to do with a person’s “energy”, but rather the chemical effects of alcohol on the body. Pride : because Ithmid Kohl is yet another example of the many practical Islamic teachings relating to health and well-being which have been shown to be enormously beneficial. It makes one proud to be a follower of such a great religion that is full of sound practices that are not based on superstition and mere faith only, but actually works and delivers. Ithmid (antimony) kohl is a case in point. As well as the major health benefits mentioned by the prophet, it also carries beauty benefits for the eyes.

If you happen to have dates in your kitchen, well, guess what! You can make Arab Kohl from the date’s kernel. Abdullah Ibn Abbas (radhi Allahu anhu) narrated that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: "Wear your white garments, for they are among your best garments, and shroud your dead in them. Among the best types of collyrium you use is antimony (ithmid): it clears the vision and makes the hair [eyelashes] sprout." [sunan Abi Dawood Book 28, Hadith 3869] Classed as Sahih by Al Albani. And theirs shall be the beautiful maidens, with large dark eyes, like pearls hidden in their shells.”Hopefully this post has opened your eyes and cleared up any wrong perceptions you might have had about Kohl. The relevant Hadiths were ommited to avoid making the article any longer. For a comprehensive look at the hadiths on Kohl, refer to ” A look at hadith : Is Kohl really a Sunnah ?”. So, why is all this confusing? Well, because antimony and stibnite are not necessarily the same thing. Insha'Allah, in the next post I will try to reference how the two are related yet different. The Greek and Latin terms for antimony, stibium, στίβι, στίμμι, were borrowed from the Egyptian name sdm.

Many people may be unaware of the lead poisoning risk, in adults and children, from an easily avoidable source: the traditional eye cosmetic known as kohl, kajal, al-kahl, or surma. The following information is intended to answer questions people may ask about kohl and its dangers:In the United States, kohl is not on the list of color additives approved by the Food and Drug Administration, which considers kohl unsafe for use due to its potential lead content. It is illegal to import into, or sell in, the United States. [36] See also [ edit ] This method of making the eyes attractive has been practised by eastern women since the days of antiquity. For thousands of years the ladies of Asia and North Africa have used kohl to darken and enlarge their eyes, thus giving them an air of mystery. The striking sloe-eyed beauties one sees in these lands are a testimony to the magic effect of this ancient cosmetic. Alhamdulillah, for the sunnah - we have options! If lead and antimony based kuhl is banned in our country or we are not able to use it but we wish to follow the sunnah of Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallem) and gain reward for doing so, then insha'Allah, as ulema have written, we can obtain the reward for following the sunnah of applying kuhl by using kuhl made from other materials. We may not gain the narrated eye health benefits associated with the use of ithmid but insha'Allah we can gain reward for following sunnah. Some brands of kajal claim to be 100% natural and herbal... so, these would not be considered ithmid (remember, ithmid refers to a specific stone or mineral).

Galena belongs to the octahedral sulfide group of minerals with metal ions in octahedral positions, like members pyrrhotite and niccolite. The galena group is named after its most common member, with other isometric members that include manganese bearing alabandite and niningerite. Galena is one of the most abundant and widely distributed sulfide minerals. It crystallizes in the cubic crystal system often showing octahedral forms. It is often associated with the minerals sphalerite, calcite and fluorite.A group of researchers in China tried to find some scientific basis of this claimed property of lead sulfide (galena) relating to absorption of sun rays when applied into the eyes in the form of kohl. [23] The authors reported the ultraviolet (UV) absorption spectra of a thin film of lead sulfide prepared on "indium tin oxide" (ITO) substrate. The spectra showed that lead sulfide thin films had higher absorption and lower transmittance in the UV light band, which further increases with the increased deposition voltage. Animals that breathe in low levels of antimony for a long time may experience eye irritation, hair loss and lung damage. Dogs may experience heart problems even when they are exposed to low levels of antimony. Animals that breathed in low levels of antimony for a couple of months may also experience fertility problems. Kohl in Arabic is anything that is applied to the eye and/or its surroundings such as eyelashes and eyebrows. The practice was both a superstitious belief to protect their souls and avoid evil spirits (or better, the ‘evil eye’), and an actual cure to the eye infections circulating in the desert. The interesting aspect is that kohl was a substance obtained through one of the earliest processes of distillation in human history! It's a comprehensive work we have ahead of us. As for myself, I do not expect to see the database completed," Guth says.
