I’ve had my Aonic 5 for 2 weeks now and I agree that they are hard to like. While they are a slight improvement over the SE 535 with clearer more punchy bass and better mids, you have to experiment with the filter and ear tip combinations to counter the sibilance at the high end (They love EDM but hate Metallica). Once you get the right balance they‘ll put a smile on your face. A TIDAL Masters file of The Raconteurs’ version of Donovan’s Hey Gyp (Dig the Slowness) sounds entirely fulfilling and does enough to demonstrate every aspect of the 215s’ talents. Pairing the Shure AONIC 50 (Gen 2) over Bluetooth is a bit of a pain, depending on whether the headphones are trying to find their last paired device. The Secure Fit Adapter/antennae serve to keep the 215s secure, certainly, and they’re very effective at maintaining a wireless connection to a source player – not once during what has been a pretty extensive test did the Shures even come close to letting go of their wireless grip on the incoming signal. In the most straightforward terms, the Shure AONIC 50 are a great-sounding pair of headphones. They’re balanced, but they’re not undemonstrative. They’re subtle, but they’re not understated. They’re energetic, but they’re not aggressive. At the same time, the Shures look a little unrefined compared to the simpler and more discreet hinge mechanisms used by some rivals. With the right ear tips and the nozzle, the Shure Aonic 5 achieves an impressive musical balance across the audio spectrum. Most earphones are focused on making them sound “clear” and “boomy”. The Aonic 5 delivers instrumental details, achieves musical impact on all frequencies without compromising any. The bass fills without drowning the highs, the treble provides clarity without exaggeration, and the midrange holds them together with details, definition and expression. They are not easy to like, I have to admit, and treble energy took me a while to get it right, which fortunately I did. For casual listening, I would very much prefer a brighter clearer more transparent sound, which the Aonic 4 achieves better.
