About this deal

This is most obvious whilst listening to largely electronic music, where low-frequency elements tend to be discrete and uniform. For all its bass weight, the Woburn isn’t on a par with the Sonos in terms of sub-bass delivery either. The frequencies are present, but they’re not projected with the same verve. This sub-bass performance isn’t a surprise, given the very conventional driver array used here. Other than that, you’ve got AUX In and AUX Out connections, and RCA connectivity if you’re looking to make the Woburn II part of a wider Hi-Fi system. At this price, it would be good to have seen some more smart features – multi-room support with the rest of Marshall's multi-room range would have been appreciated for instance, or Spotify Connect or AirPlay functionality, too. If you’ve owned or used a Marshall amp then the potentiometer knobs for the volume, bass and treble will be instantly familiar too - they look and feel brilliant, although there isn’t a hard stop at either end of the rotation, they spin indefinitely.

There’s also extra depth and timbre to mid-range tones; guitars sound especially brilliant (they couldn’t not, could they?) while vocal reproduction is incredibly realistic. If you close your eyes you can almost imagine the singer in the room with you. This makes their design pop out beautifully and creates a simplistic menu that still offers a good amount of customization. It does take away from other features that would have been nice, however. The second generation Woburn comes with a frequency range of 30Hz – 20kHz and offers two 50-watt class D amps for the woofer as well as two 15-watt amps for the tweeters. To the surprise of no one, you can also play this impressive Marshall speaker in stereo. To put it bluntly, The Marshall Bluetooth app is pretty poorly reviewed (2.6 & 1.7 on Google Play and the App Store) and difficult to work with. Thankfully it serves very little purpose outside of sound customization – which can also be tweaked via the top panel – and software updates. Just know that the initial setup with these apps has been reported to be incredibly difficult and time-consuming for some. While it doesn’t offer all the features you would find on similarly priced products, if you are a fan of vintage Marshall amplifiers the Woburn 2 is an exceptionally well-made Bluetooth speaker. There’s a new speaker array in the Woburn 3, which features a three-way driver system (Woburn 1 and 2 only were only two-way) including a 90w sub with a rear port, two 15w mids and two 15w tweeters. This is supposed to give a richer, more even tone and help the Woburn 3 project further into the corners of your room. Marshall Woburn 3: what’s the story with the design?

Verdict – The Woburn 3 offers an HDMI input and a Skip button, technically making it superior in this category. Realistically, both products operate about the same when it comes to what they additionally come equipped with. You can hear it outside of sound-proofed rooms and ramp your music up to the point where it literally shakes your home’s foundations. The speaker offers great scale, and sounds more comfortable at higher volumes than most. You get the sense it was made to play loud, where some other units in this class can appear to struggle, making certain parts of the audio harder on the ear. Jumping between audio sources is handled by a small round source selector button, and there’s a similar pause/play button on the other end of the control panel, past the dials.

accommodationResetWarningMessage":"Continuing will clear your basket. Would you still like to continue?", Aside from being larger than its the Stanmore II, the Woburn II shares the same look as other members of the family. The controls sit on a brushed gold plate on the top of the unit. Most modern wireless speakers are a little ashamed of their physical buttons, but here they’re part of the appeal. Whatever audio source you’re hooking up to the Woburn II, one thing’s for certain – this speaker goes insanely loud. Making use of two tweeters and dual 5.25-inch subwoofers, individually powered by class D amps, cranked up to its full 110 watt output power it could even be heard rumbling outside of TechRadar’s sound-proofed test room (apologies to those working nearby…)

The Stanmore, Acton, and Marshal Woburn speaker are all examples of incredible Bluetooth speakers designed by the Marshall brand.

The frequency response of this product is 35Hz – 20 kHz which is only a tad behind the Woburn 2 – though it does fall short. It should be said that the soundstage is audibly better on the 3 which can be understood when looking underneath the hood. Internally this speaker offers a 90-watt class D amp for the bass speaker, two 15-watt class d amps for the midrange speakers, and two 15-watt class D amps for the tweeters. It does also play music in stereo, which feels required for any speaker in this price range. These are needed because otherwise the Marshall Woburn II would have to use motorised controls to keep up with any volume changes made via your phone. That sounds neat, but would also likely be too expensive to implement.Moving to the dimensions of the second-generation Woburn, it is one of the heftier Bluetooth speakers you are going to find. It weighs in at 18.85 lbs, 2.43 lbs more than the Woburn 3. It measures out to 15.75 x 12.20 x 7.87 inches, so while it is bulky – you shouldn’t have an issue carrying it around.
