Some water bowsers can be fitted with sprayers, but the majority are fitted with 1" water pumps connected to a hose reel and have a hose pipe gun or spray lance. These water bowsers can also be manufactured with rear chevron boards and flashing beacons for working roadside. Larger water pumps can also be fitted to a water bowser for feeding larger trees that require a lot of water directly pumped into the ground surrounding the tree. About 20% of the solar energy falling on the building is trapped within it and used to heat the swimming pools and the interior area.

The outer wall is based on the Weaire-Phelan structure, a structure devised from the natural formation of bubbles in soap lather.The complex Weaire-Phelan pattern was developed by slicing through bubbles in soap foam, resulting in more irregular, organic patterns than foam bubble structures proposed earlier by the scientist Kelvin. Using the Weaire-Phelan geometry, the Water Cube's exterior cladding is made of 4,000 ETFE bubbles, some as large as 9.14 metres across, with seven different sizes for the roof and 15 for the walls.
