He writes with passion, humour and clarity and engages so deeply with the tributaries of inquiry that reading it feels as exhilarating as being towed by a dolphin…There’s so much here that I can’t do it justice; chapters on water at night; currents and tides; reading waves; the coast. I learned I have a huge gap in my knowledge in the latter area, despite having spent a large chunk of my life scrambling around it. This is an absolute gem of a book. A must-have for anyone who loves the water.“ Lynne Roper, T he Outdoor Swimming Society. Vanessa seems to find some comfort in the small island where people mostly keep to themselves. We begin to find out more about Vanessa’s past and what she is escaping from. Encounters with some of the islanders have her recalling certain episodes, interactions and comments made: “It’s those f***ing men. They still run everything and look out for each other, no matter what. I hate them. Don’t you? And it’s women like us who allow it to happen. Because staying quiet is easier than causing a fuss, isn’t it? Sometimes I think we’re just as bad as they are.”

Water is the story of Vanessa Carvin, a middle-aged woman, who arrives under an assumed name on a tiny island off the Irish coast. Her husband is in prison after committing monstrous crimes, in which she may or may not have been complicit. The tragic fallout has shattered her world. Before she can move on, she must consider her culpability, work through her guilt and grief, and find a path to redemption. With a true gift for prose, Kerry Washington conveys an intoxicating passion and gratitude for her life. I found myself captivated by every chapter, at her side, inspired by the full spectrum of her experience.Penso anche che sarebbe stato ideale inserire un maggior numero di grafici nel testo, specialmente per spiegare alcuni concetti più complessi. In the epilogue to The Water Book, Alok Jha writes of water: It has been our wellspring of stories and culture, the source of creation and death; it has shaped our language and politics and been at the core of how we built civilization. It’s been a while since I’ve read a novel by Boyne. Years ago I read, and loved, The Heart’s Invisible Furies - so I was excited to read his latest novel. Experience blue space vicariously ... the research vessel MV Alucia in Antarctica, as seen on Blue Planet II. Photograph: BBC Natural History Unit She wanders in one day drawn to the Stations of the Cross, admiring the art work but then becoming annoyed with what it all represents.

And you'll be from Dublin, I suppose," she continues, employing a tense that I'm not sure exists in the language.

As humanity strays across planetary boundaries, Boccaletti’s political biography of water is essential reading. This bold and ambitious saga offers important lessons and instils humility in the reader, both of which we need as we face the dangers of increasing pressure on nature, climate change, and corrosive inequality.” —Rachel Kyte, Dean, The Fletcher School, Tufts University This is the first in a interlinked novel quartet named after the elements……Water,Earth,Fire and Air. I don't want to go into too much more detail however this book just moved me in a way very few authors can. I genuinely don't know how Boyne could have achieved that within such a short book.

This is a book for the layperson, but a book, definitely, for a layperson who doesn’t shy away from the technical. (The chemistry, at times, had me floundering, as did some of the geology). But, while I did find myself getting lost occasionally, and I would’ve liked more on the cultural significance of water—this book was still a good read, mainly because I learnt so much from it. Ice acting as a metal? The fact that marine life produces half the oxygen in the atmosphere through photosynthesis? That newly formed sea ice is naturally salty, but (because the salt drains away gradually into the water below) it eventually becomes tasteless, while the water below becomes extra salty? About the Mpemba Effect, and how it was ‘discovered’? A] wonderfully detailed account of humankind’s relationship with water . . . During this time of accelerated population growth, climate change, and political instability, Water is essential reading.” — Booklist Vanessa Carvin is a woman trying to escape her past life in Dublin and has rented a sparsely furnished cottage, with no wifi or television, on an island off the Galway coast. As soon as she arrives on the island she changes her name and shaves her hair to a blunt crop. Water focuses on Vanessa, AKA Willow, a woman trying to escape grief and trauma by moving to an isolated Irish island. This novella sees Boyne return to what I consider his greatest strengths - meditative and moving drama shot through with lovely moments of humour. There are many references to water throughout, hence the title. This is a novel worth going into without knowing too much about the plot - as this adds to the mystery of the story. However, it might be worth looking into the trigger warnings - feel free to DM me if you want to know what they are.
