We spoke to Rubeo about some of the more challenging costumes audiences see in Love and Thunder, and how she sees herself as a facilitator in collaborating with the actors to help them build their characters. A Closer Look at the Costumes in “Thor: Love and Thunder”
While Portman sports a similar costume, Rubeo chose to use silver metallic and deeper red hues for the actress’ Mighty Thor costume. One of the biggest differences between the Thors’ costumes, however, is that Portman’s was paired with a winged silver headpiece. For the film’s other characters, like Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie and the people of New Asgard, Rubeo essentially kept the same aesthetic from pervious iterations of the characters, adding modern touches to their costumes to show how they’ve adapted to life in their new environment while still holding onto certain traditional style elements that were popular in Old Asgard. Witness the might of Mjölnir and Stormbreaker, the voltage of Zeus’ lightning bolt, Valkyrie’s kingly wares, Gorr’s ghoulish threads, and Thor’s beautiful raw silk tunic embellished with Gumbaynggirr and Bundjalung artist Otis Carey’s print. For the Omnipotence City scene, I did a god costume that had to be all in turquoise, in broken pieces like a mosaic. We actually made a digital print of the inlaid turquoise, with all the nuances in colors, and made a body suit for this actor, and then the makeup artists matched it for his face. His headpiece was a 3D piece with elements to look like solid gold, and then I personally put all the feathers in that. It is seen onscreen for about 2 seconds, but I was very proud of it. It was challenging, but I just loved it. Everything about this project was fun. The Thor Love and Thunder Costume is a combination of vibrant colors worn by Thor Odinson. Jane Foster played by Natalie Portman, who was an astrophysicist and Thor’s love interest in the earlier movies would be replacing Thor as the God of Thunder in Thor: Love in Thunder. After Thor is deemed unworthy and he leaves his superhero days behind while taking the name of Odinson, the responsibility falls on the shoulders of Jane who becomes worthy of Mjolnir and takes on the mantle of Mighty Thor. 8.
