About this deal

This is a warning for all our guests at the wellness retreat. A woman’s body has been found at the bottom of the cliff beneath the yoga pavilion. We believe her death was a tragic accident, though DS Elin Warner has arrived on the island to investigate. Minutes pass, but no one comes. It’s getting late, he can tell. The last of the sun is almost gone, the sand in front of him now in shadow. Outside the cave, Elin says she will call the detective who worked the Creacher case. She also wonders if the cases are connected, why the perpetrator started up again after so many years. Steed wonders if it’s a copycat. Elin is at work. After being taken off the MCIT (major crimes investigation team) after her mini-breakdown, she’s been moved to a burglary case. Just then, she gets a call to investigate the body at Lumen, as she’s the closest officer. She brings Steed with her. Elin Warner is introduced as a woman who works as a detective. The isolated, imposing getaway spot of Le Somet located high up in the Alps of Switzerland is the last place she wants to visit. However, she still decides to visit the place as she has received an invitation from her estranged brother named Issac and his lovely fiance, Laure for celebrating their engagement. Elin has recently put her detective job on hold for some time and take a much-required vacation. Le Sommet appears to be the first stop where she is headed. As Elin Warner arrives at the hotel, a strong storm has hit the area and begins to take a threatening form. The atmosphere at Le Sommet makes her feel on edge as there is something about it that doesn’t seem right.

Elin tells Steed that Creacher is in prison but that some people thought he was innocent. They also find a Grim Reaper cloak. Elin freaks out and runs out of the cave.A few minutes later, he drags himself from under the overhang. Straightening up, he glances carefully around him, but the beach is deserted; there’s nobody there. Overall: I loved this second book definitely more than the first one! I enjoyed the final twist! But there are still lots of loopholes and unanswered questions. I hope I get all of my answers by reading third book. I have some theories about the identity of Elin’s troll! Once again, Sarah Pearse has situated her novel in a deeply atmospheric and vivid setting. The island locale in question is bathed in suspicion, shadows and darkness. It is also tragically beautiful as it houses a wellness retreat. Pearse does a fine job of carefully describing her location base. I felt like I was stood on the same ground as the lead character and the occupants of this shady island. Pearse is one author who is brilliant at setting the scene and immersing her readers in the surroundings of her book. Fans of The Sanatorium will appreciate Pearse’s eye for detail in the location aspects of The Retreat. It truly does magnify the intensity of the events in this novel. This time Elin and her partner Steed are called to a luxury resort off the South coast of the UK to investigate the death of a young woman in the night. Early signs point to an accident but there is just something not right. The island has a sinister feel and a dark past and she believes there is ,ore to it, things are just not adding up. And then another body is found, from the same group of guests at the resort. In the midst of a wild storm, they are cut off from the mainland, Elin and Steed have their work cut out to work out what is going on before there is another body.

Is it me, or do you feel like your head might explode? There was just SO much going on here and, to me, a lot of it didn’t make sense.

We have the toxic Leger family. So much time was spent discussing this mysterious fire that I suspected Maya was up to something. At the same time, when reading a mystery-thriller with a DETECTIVE, I do not want to feel like the smartest person in the room. Our protagonist waved literally everything off to circumstance or chance. Like isn’t it your job to NOT think that?

I ripped right through both novels, expecting all ends to be neatly tied up at the end, and left frustrated and disappointed both times. I’ll definitely read the next book, but I’m confused asI am SO disappointed with this. I gave her first book three stars which I though was okay, but also her debut novel, so what - room for improvement, right?

We all fancy a spa break don't we? Well don't include me after reading this book. It had me hooked from start to finish.' ***** Pearse goes from strength to strength in The Retreat. The suspense inexorably builds to a stunning climax. An added treat is the return of Elin Warner, who is a fascinating character one can only root for.' David Baldacci, No.1 Sunday Times bestselling author of Mercy When guests at a five-star resort in the Alps disappear mid-blizzard, vacation’s over for detective Elin Warner. It’s The Shining but with a full house.” Seth’s murder was never explained. How did Caleb do it? What was up with the drugs in Seth’s bag? Was Seth doing some drug dealing with Caleb tagging along?? Why did Seth and Bea both have limestone powder on their mouths?? I would understand if it was just found randomly on their bodies, but why their mouths???

Be careful who you root for, as no character is safe in Sarah Pearse’s new novel The Retreat. In the spirit of a true thriller, the tension is taut and the suspense is real as the pace builds to a heart-stopping finale. A triumphant second novel, which is no mean feat.” When a young woman’s body is found at yoga pavilion, Elin gets summoned to the retreat, connecting with Farrah she hasn’t had a chance to form a proper sisterhood bound. The falling of young woman ( is related to the young group we’ve introduced but I’m not gonna say who) is reported as tragic accident. But when another incident happens before young woman’s body gets cold, Elin finds herself in the middle of an escalated events: a murderer is lurking around!
