My parents met here, my late father Bill Waterhouse was a waiter here, with another man called Roland Marks ( whom would later become his best man). It would have been around 1959/ 1960, my dad was former Royal Navy, originally from Portsmouth, he was a real character and sadly missed, ( like so many of his era he could have done stand up comedy,) he was so observational, a very funny man,with a life experience from sailingthe world! The Domino was really a great place to be on a weekend top bands good beer and lovely girls. Alan (pancho}Bramwell -15/11/13 Who remembers the Domino Club on Grey Mare Lane? Some fantastic acts on there including James Brown and 'Little' Stevie Wonder. The Hollies were always on as were Syd and Eddie (Little and Large). A small barber shop in a covered shopping arcade is the unlikely and well disguised entrance to one of Leeds’, and indeed the UK’s best bars. The dark suited burley doorman is the most unlikely looking hairdresser so something of a giveaway as to the bar’s location. I remember passing the Domino Club on the 53 bus on my way home from work 1969/70 and there was a group playing there called Johnny Ball and the Four Skins ,I couldn't stop laughing I was only 16/17 so still had a schoolboy humour, the rest of the passengers didn't seem so amused. Originally it was called The Prince's Cinema which had opened in 1915 as The King George's Picture House. In 1930 it became The Prince's Cinema which closed on Saturday, October 28, 1961 with a Walt Disney double bill; 'The Absent-Minded Professor' and The Housemasters.' It then became the nightclub named The Domino Club.Then there was the Saturday afternoon kid dances. This was the highlight of my younger days. Me and my good friends, Peter Hall, Eric Emmerson, Robie (David Robertson) used to go and they used to have a dance competition every Saturday and I used to dance my heart out and used to win all the time and the girl who ran it used to give me a box of chocolates and would ask me for a kiss when she gave me the chocolates. THE GIRL WHO USED TO RUN THE DANCES..????? and I'll fill you in more then......You will be quite surprised....LOL...Then we moved to Canada in 1973. Great club, great nights.Met my 1st husband there and dragged him along anywhere Billy Furywas playing. The Houghton's had a Son,[adopted?..not clear on that one,but he lived with them,and was brought up by them,in the big trailer,[showman's 'van]. One night in late 60s we saw a band called The Government.Brilliant singer, David Coverdale, who later joined Deep Purple. It took months and months for her to come to terms with it,She was just over 16 yrs old,and I was 17 yrs old. I remember the resident trio The Jeff Set with a great sax. Also saw The Move singing Flowers in the rain, late 60s I think.Me being a tee-totaller,I only went ti the Domino ti see "The Ivy League","Troggs","Los Zafiros",Toby Twirl,[Davy Holland ..[Holly]...from Blyth..],and other great groups..,so I cannot comment on the beer!! The Vibrations (plus 7 great acts, one of which I think was The Noblemen with Martin Barre on guitar pre-Jethro Tull). After this show, straight to Princess Club, Chorlton. Club Domino, my favorite subject as a few people on here already know. Right I'll start at the beginning. As a little kid aged 6 or 7 my Aunt came from Co Durham and took me and my two sisters to see a movie at the Wallaw. I think the movie was "The Great St Trinian's Train Robbery" Only movie I ever saw there. Then the place closed and was remodeled to be The Domino as we called it. Big night club that was just up the street from where we lived as I lived at 15 Kings rd. My Mom & Dad used to go there all the time. They owned the Clayton ballroom,and ran the roller-skating on Wednesday nights,and the dances on Friday,and Saturday nights. The Coasters (with The Noblemen featuring Martin Barre on guitar) on 20 November 1966. Straight on to Princess Club in Chorlton.
