About this deal

On the palate this whisky is so soft and mellow. It feels velvety and gentle with the sweeter notes from the nose appearing first, giving a confected edge. Butterscotch, toffee and heather honey mingle with chocolate hazelnut spread and dried fruits - think of raisin, sultanas, prunes and candied orange peel. Candied limes also come through later on. Then comes some more bitter and warming notes. Gingerbread and increasingly influential baking spices (imagine cinnamon, all-spice and a hint of nutmeg) develop and are complimented by oak tannins and a pinch of high percentage cocoa powder. Delicate biscuit-like cereal and green apple notes underpin everything. Now a different kind of recommendation. While this Tamnavulin was a whisky with hints of red wine, I’ve really enjoyed a white wine that has a similar taste to a whisky. The wine in question is aged in oak barrels of different toasting levels for 30 days, with more American oak used than French/European oak. I think this oak influence adds a delicious element of creaminess and flavour that immediately reminded me of whisky. The wine is Rioja Vega Tempranillo Blanco, with Tempranillo grape being a classic red grape. This white variety was such a pleasant surprise when I tasted it, I found it to be a good accompaniment with food before going on to a dram later in the evening. For me, there was enough influence from the cask here, where it wasn’t subdued or quiet and thankfully not completely overpowered by the French red wine.

Underneath and playing a supporting role are notes of dried fruit (think of raisin, sultana and candied orange peel especially), plus fudge and toffee. The pinches of cinnamon and cocoa powder from the nose are also evident late on, as is some white pepper and a hint of gingerbread.Regardless of whether the Service offers the functionality to contribute, you are solely responsible and liable for any content and information that you create, upload, post, publish, link to, duplicate, transmit, record, display or otherwise make available on the Service or to other Members, such as chat messages, text messages, videos, audio, audio recordings, music, pictures, photographs, text and any other information or materials, whether publicly posted or privately transmitted (“Contributions”). Soft honey and a hint of malt to begin with. Fruity and sweet, very approachable and no initial sharpness you’d think from a NAS 40% malt. Some spice, maybe cinnamon with a light touch of ground ginger. The first sniff of fruit turns into raspberry jam with cranberries. It’s quite fresh and that’s surprisingly nice. Last poke around searching for a wee bit more and I could tease out pear drop hard sweets and soft honeydew melon. Really nice nose. It has some lovely characteristics coming from both the distillery spirit and those three types of ex-sherry cask. It is no 'sherry bomb' or 'sherry monster', but displays some deliciously subtle aromas and flavours. On the palate this whisky feels soft, rich and sweet. It is initially very sweet with confected sweets (think of apple flavoured boiled sweets and peardrops), golden syrup and heather honey - this tends more towards fresh honeycomb with time. Then come the malty and grassy notes from the nose - these are prominent and intriguing with the the maltiness giving good grip, structure and a bittersweet edge while the grassiness is again dried like hay from a wild meadow and straw. The Tamnavulin whisky distillery draws its water from underground springs in the surrounding hillside and takes its cooling waters from the River Livet, whose headwaters rise in the Grampians in Moray before flowing eleven miles until their confluence with the River Avon. Like my whisky curiosity, these delicious wines sparked another liquid curiosity and I thought: “Oh no, here we go again.” Another slippery slope of geekdom and enjoyment. My heart will always be in exploring whisky and all its wonderful nuance, but I'm now looking for wine-finished whisky and hopefully a wine finish I’ve tried at least once before. The Tamnavulin Double Cask (RM 260) has been matured in American oak barrels for a sweet, mellow taste with a rich, smooth sherry cask finish. It’s amber-gold in colour with rich warm aromas of apple, toffee and honey with sweet marzipan and subtle tangy marmalade notes. On the palate, it’s fresh with mellow pear, creamy peach, pineapple and a hint of caramel. Their signature Speyside malt concludes in a rich, smooth and refreshing finish. Double Cask Don’t you love a story that begins with a chequered past and turns into a roaring success? Such is the case with Tamnavulin, a Speyside distillery established in 1966. Closed in 1995, it reopened in 2007 after a major refurbishment. Previously, many of its whiskies had gone into blends. However, in 2016 all of that changed when the distillery released its Double Cask expression, followed by the Sherry Cask Edition in 2019.

Tamnavulin was founded in 1966 by a subsidiary of Invergordon Distillers Ltd, the whisky distillery has changed little during its relatively short life. Woefully, the Tamnavulin is rather typical of 1960s-constructed distilleries and the exterior is decidedly industrial, in stark contrast to its markedly stunning locality. Whiskybase B.V. Single Malt whiskies from Tamnavulin are available in Malaysia exclusively through www.singleandavailable.com.myMy work life went a bit crazy at the end of 2022 and I don’t think I’ve ever been so busy and stressed in relation to work before in my career. So I tended to enjoy samples from the lovely whisky community for sheer enjoyment rather than delving into a dram, just taking notes for reviewing purposes.
