About this deal

Hemken RW. Factors that influence the iodine content of milk and meat: a review. J Anim Sci. 1979;48:981-5. Many companies received a middle rating because although not reporting on their emissions or demonstrating plans to reduce them, they were providing a lower carbon alternative, and not dairy milk. This included: Veg of Lund (Dug), Glebe Farm, Good Hemp, First Grade International (Koko), Watkins Drinks (Mighty), Minor Figures, Rude Health, Rebel Kitchen and The Bridge. While the cost-of-living crisis is forcing many people to make difficult choices, the top executives of larger companies are probably not worrying too much about having to tighten their belts. Soy milk made from whole or hulled soy beans have higher levels of FODMAPs compared to soy milk made from soy protein. These milks are generally considered high FODMAP, however, you can enjoy a small 60ml serve of soy milk made from hulled soya beans, or a 30ml serve of soy milk made from whole soya beans ( 1). Soya Beans Plamil received our best rating, and the rest of the companies were found to be palm oil-free. Executive Pay

Rice can have a higher greenhouse gas impact than other cereals due to the methane produced by flooded rice paddies. However, it isn’t really clear if it makes much difference to the carbon footprint of rice milk – some analyses find it somewhat bigger than the other alternatives to dairy, but others don’t. Either way, rice milk still comes out as far better for the climate than dairy milk. For more discussion of the ethical issues around rice see our shopping guide to rice. Almond On the score table we have indicated where a brand only makes one or two types of milk. But some brands make a broader range so the table below lists all the brands in this guide. Type Yellow split peas are another of the newest milk ingredients currently gaining a following in the UK. They have been praised for tasting a lot like dairy milk. Peas are nitrogen-fixing, so when included in crop rotation cycles, they can reduce the use of nitrogen fertiliser, and the release of nitrous oxide, which has a significant impact on global warming. Oats Soy flour is popular in gluten free products. It has been tested by FODMAP Friendly and it is high FODMAP for fructans and GOS in 50g serves. This means you should avoid large serves during the low FODMAP phase of the low FODMAP diet. You might find you can tolerate 1 to 2 slices of gluten free bread that contains soy flour, providing it isn’t the predomination flour (eg listed in the first 3 ingredients), so it can be worth exploring your tolerance levels. Final ThoughtsThere is a long history of research into the effect of soy on thyroid function. The first study examining this relationship was published in 1933. 2 It is well established that soy doesn’t affect thyroid function in individuals with a normal-functioning thyroid 3 , 4 but there has been concern that in those whose iodine intake is marginal, soyfood consumption, because of the exposure to isoflavones, could adversely affect thyroid function. However, in 2011, clinical work by Sosvorova et al. 5 strongly suggests this concern is without foundation.

(Archived by WebCite ® at http://www.webcitation.org/6i3VccciK) These companies all received our worst rating: Blue Diamond (Almond Breeze), Soulfresh (Bruce), and Olga (Sojade). Palm oil The following companies received our best rating for carbon management and reporting: Oatly, Sharpham Park, Oato, Plamil and The Organic Plantmilk Company (ReRooted). While palm oil wasn’t found in plant milk itself, many of the companies in this guide are using it in their other products. Relatively little is known about the iodine nutriture of consumers of plant milks. In the UK, iodine status (as assessed by 24 h iodine excretion) was lower in consumers of soymilk in women of childbearing age, reflecting the negative correlation between intake of soymilk and cows’ milk. But this study included only 5 women who drank soymilk. 16 A US study found that vegetarians are iodine sufficient but also that vegans may be at risk for low iodine intake. 17 However, in contrast to the British study, 16 higher urinary iodine concentrations (indicating higher iodine intake) were associated with recent ingestion of soymilk. 17 The authors of this US study recommended that vegan women of child-bearing age supplement their diet with 150 ug of iodine daily, 17 which is the same recommendation that exists for non-vegan women. 18 Boiled soy beans (these are mature soy beans) are high FODMAP for both GOS and fructans at small ¼ cup serves ( 1). This means it is advised that you avoid them during the low FODMAP phase. Soy Flour
