About this deal

Hayes, our sweet Prince, was an interesting character. I don't usually get intrigued by such characters, meaning the innocent, unhappy privileged kind. But something about Hayes made me like him instantly. It's partly thanks to the Hayes effect and partly the author's incredible writing. He also had a beautiful character development. He didn't lose his sweet demeanor, but he grew up (the hard way). In-your-face honesty and fierceness season the instantly appealing 1st person POV. Compassion, melancholy and a sense of justice are also mixed in. The narrative is intimate and in synch with what she is feeling and her thoughts. Her siren tendencies, the way she tastes emotions and her murderous inclination are described aptly. This is a passionate story of a protagonist we should consider a villain, a beautiful 'monster' to be afraid of, though we can't help but love her. Can she fight her nature? i’ve followed the author on tiktok for a long time, so i’ve been really anticipating this book! i love both mermaids and hidden identities, both of which this book had. i also love strong family relationships, and it was awesome seeing saoirse’s relationship with her little sister. And the prince seems to be fascinated by her for some reason. The more she tries to shake him off, the more he tries to get closer. And her resolve to hate all the Royals and keep away from the prince slowly crumbles the more time she spends with him and gets to know him better. He's different from the rest of the Royal family - he's kind, compassioned, tries to understand, isn't prejudiced against other races, and most importantly, he listens to Saoirse and tries to make changes with his limited power. They also need to join hands and find the killer of his friend...

The world-building was done very well. I loved getting to know the creatures that live within the wall and the powers they have. The snippets of information about the outside are sparse, but that makes me only more curious to learn more about the world itself! Saoirse Sorkova survives on secrets. As the last siren in her kingdom, she can sing any man to an early grave - but her very existence is illegal, and if her true identity were ever discovered, it would be her life on the line. Hidden identity is definitely the main trope of this book, not only our FMC hides who she is, but also some other powerful players. Wow, that was really easy to unknot. Super convenient that they didn’t tie her hands together. This book is idiotic. So the villains are like great, he’s dead. Push him in the ocean. So she does. And they’re like nice doing business with you. We’re gonna drown your sister. So they throw her sister tied to an anvil into the ocean. And then the villains just leave her, even though they know she’s a siren. They’re like we gotta go kill the king and queen, peace! So Ariel jumps into the ocean to save them. None of the villains got Boy Scout badges for knot-tying, so her sister was literally just able to untie herself and is fine. And the prince is fine because she fake poisoned him. Have I mentioned that these villains are awful? Sing Me To Sleep was a superb debut in that I couldn't put this down and that's pretty epic for a first book. Added to that, I'm so glad this is going to be a series because I need more of Saoirse and Hayes, more of the world and the delicious writing. It never rubs me the right way when we have main characters that are just chill with slavery, but it seems extra wrong when those characters are people of color. OH MY GOD THIS BOOK IS ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE! i was hooked right from the start of the book and the twists and turns made my head spin. i can honestly see this book being the YA book of 2023 - it is honestly incredible. Descriptions of our characters surroundings on the other hand were just non - existent. The story starts out in a pub for example, but do I know how it looked like?? Nope. Same with Characters, I guess one dude's cheekbones looked like glass, whatever that's supposed to mean. Not sharp like glass, not cut like glass, just glass. Guess our poor man was just see-through. And everyone's eyes were a different crystal colour, but that's as far as we get.

The romance was terrible. I did not understand Hayes' attraction at all. I can cope with insta-love, usually it even works quite well as it'll speed up the narrative and keep the story engaging. However there was actually zero reason for him to be remotely interested in her. Fine, we'll ignore the insta-love. Then why does he continue to fall harder for her throughout the book, he doesn't know anything about her and she isn't kind to him at all. But alright, we'll accept her dark and mysterious intrigue is enough. She killed his best friend and lied to his face about it, that should've been an instant end to any attraction and Gabi Burton clearly realises it because she tries to explain why he still loves her, but it falls flat as it makes no sense whatsoever. The other benefit of Saoirse’s ability to taste emotions is the incredibly detailed language that this allows Burton to infuse into the novel. Emotions have colors, scents and flavors — happiness is sweet, lust is spicy — and as the reader we are given another layer through which to experience this tale: taste. This level of sensory language and worldbuilding is not something that I have experienced much of in any books in recent memory, and it is a wonderful addition to the story that Burton is weaving, one that makes the book all the more enjoyable. Vivid descriptions and details smoothly bring this story and world to life. I also loved how the complex world-building was delivered in bite-sized pieces and merged with the unfolding story. Saoirse doesn’t know, and it’s not her primary concern. She is more concerned with keeping her and her sister’s identity secret, for if anyone realizes Saorise is a siren, she’ll be put to death. For sirens are known to have an insatiable desire to kill.My biggest grape with this story is that the main character is a 17 year old siren. Sirens - that are known for using sexual persuasion to force their will over unwelling participants. are known for using sexual persuasion to force their will over unwilling participants. So, this is the story of 17 year old who uses the power of sexual persuasion to manipulate people to their death. Because the main character is UNDERAGE I Have a very difficult time getting into this story, it makes me uncomfortable.

One of the greatest strengths of this book is that Burton has created a compelling protagonist who walks the fine line between what is right and what is wrong. When her sister, the one person she cares about most in this world, is in danger, how far will Saoirse go to protect her? Taste the Sea The conclusion to this book makes me question if the author just couldn't decide on best way to finish stuff happening and discovered a perfect solution - le sequel, opening pandora's box completely unnecessary for the story to be done IMO. This book could've been saved by remaining a standalone, having dark ending for the FL but actually settling her crimes properly, not some lovey-dovey 'hope never dies' ending we got. I would recommend it to fans of sirens and readers who enjoyed The Cruel Prince and To Kill A Kingdom. Oh my freaking god I loved this book! I read it in under 24 hours it ws so damn good. A captivating story of hidden identities, secrets, betrayals and a slow burn romance to die for, this is a new YA favourite of mine. I cannot wait for the sequel and will absolutely be re-reading this. Saoirse is the perfect morally-grey anti-hero that you cannot help but root for. She will do anything for her family, risking her own life for her sister. She is the perfect grump of the grumpy/sunshine romance but deep down she cares, a lot.Saoirse is someone, who lies about her identity to avoid being executed, keeps to herself, has only one friend (and she would like to keep it that way), is very hard-working, and works as an assassin for mercenaries during the nights for extra money for her family... the catch of being the assassin? While she needs the money for her sister's school tuition, she can't deny she likes to kill and needs to kill to stay sane - it's siren's nature to kill because the pull is too strong. And she's been battling this pull for the majority of her life. Sing me to Sleep has an undeniable and absolutely irresistible voice that makes you hungry for more.
