About this deal

Hugo Award–nominated director Edgar Wright is attached to a movie version of English author Simon Stephenson’s upcoming debut SF novel Set My Heart to Five, according to an announcement by HarperCollins imprint Hanover Square Press. But using Dr Gludenstein's Feelings Wheel, Jared begins to identify more and more of the things he is not supposed to have. Where will it end up? Has he been around humans too long? Is he a glitch in the Matrix or the future of robotics? The novel, set in 2054, focuses on a character named Jared, who’s described by the publisher as “an android who undergoes an emotional awakening and embarks on a quest to convince humans that he and his kind should be permitted to feel.” After he’s exposed to 1980s and ’90s movies, he goes on “an unforgettable adventure across the West Coast of America, after he determines to write a film script that will change the world.”

😍 One of the most original, funny, and heartwarming stories I’ve read in years. This novel has it all—humor, insight, social commentary, romance, Hollywood, the end of society as we know it, old movies, and classic cars. Jared may be a bot, but he feels emotions more acutely than most humans.... Set My Heart to Five will set your heart well past that. It certainly did mine." With the time approaching when he is to be demolished, he flees to LA. There he takes a job as a dishwasher in a restaurant. He also attends classes in screenwriting. Most movies being made depict bots killing humans by lasers shot from their eyes or nuking cities from space. This has caused the public to hate and fear bots. Jared knows he must pretend to be human. Jared's screenplay aims to present to viewers that bots are kind and friendly and definitely not dangerous. Arka kapak yazısını okuduğumda beni çok heyecanlandıran Kalbimi Beşe Kur, çok farklı, alışılmışın dışında bir konuya sahip. Bir kere ana karakter bir robot. Nasıl klişe bir kurgu olabilir ki zaten?I don’t know if I it’s just because I have mild autism, but I totally identified with this robot from the beginning. I love the way he talks. I love reading a book that has words I have to look up! That hasn’t happened in I don’t know how long.

I loved this original, delightful, poignant, and heartwarming book. It was written with wit, wisdom and insight into the human condition despite its shortcomings and the perception of what it means to be human. Jared works as a dentist in small-town Michigan. His life is totally normal, except for one thing. He is a bot engineered with human DNA to look and act like a real person. One day at a screening of a classic movie, Jared notices a strange sensation around his eyes. Bots are not permitted to have feelings, but as the theater lights come on, Jared discovers he is crying. I have a complaint regarding the formatting of the copy I received from Netgalley, though. The parts written as screenplays are all jumbled up. They seriously need some more formatting and editing.

A delightfully entertaining, deceptively poignant debut novel about a humanlike bot named Jared, whose emotional awakening leads him on an unforgettable quest for connection, belonging and possibly even true love Overcome with a full range of emotions, and facing an imminent reset, Jared heads west, determined to forge real connections. He yearns to find his mother, the programmer who created him. He dreams of writing a screenplay that will change the world. Along the way, he might even fall in love. But a bot with feelings is a dangerous proposition, and Jared’s new life could come to an end before it truly begins. One day at a screening of a classic movie, Jared feels a strange sensation around his eyes. Everyone knows that bots can’t feel emotions, but as the theater lights come on, Jared is almost certain he’s crying. Confused, he decides to watch more old movies to figure out what’s happening. The process leads to an emotional awakening that upends his existence. Jared, it turns out, can feel. Jared is a bot. Engineered from human DNA, he lives a productive life as a dentist in Ypsilanti, Michigan and is deeply programmed to serve humans. Until one day … he starts to have feelings. Thus begin his simultaneously hilarious and yet poignant adventures as he heads to Hollywood to write a screenplay daring to portray bots as beings deserving humane treatment and not the “killer bots” that comprise the bulk of modern cinema.

Both whimsical and lyrical, Set My Heart to Five is an astounding examination of the human condition and all the things that make it up: curiosity, duty, art, dreams, and—of course—love. It is, much like its hero Jared, made up of both laughter and tears, and one of the most unique books ever crafted." Let Not the Waves Of the Sea’, my memoir about losing my brother came out in 2012 Hello, good readers!Jared is a bot. Bots have taken over the responsibility for the jobs that humans no longer want to do, including Jared's job as a dentist. Bots live lives in human bodies, going to work, living in houses, eating, but with one big difference---bots have no feelings. This book was not what I was expecting. I was expecting a book in the vein of All Systems Red and the accompanying books, because that is a book about a bot who develops...unwarranted feelings/empathy/care, and this seemed like a similarly set up premise and therefore something I would like. Hugest of thanks to Midas Pr, once more, for inviting me on the tour for ''Set My Heart To Five', which is out now in hardcover and ebook editions, and, shortly in audiobook as well! Let Not the Waves Of the Sea’, my memoir about losing my brother came out in 2012. It won Best First Book at the Scottish Book Awards, and was serialized on BBC Radio 4.

The social commentary is priceless as Jared struggles to make rational sense of human behavior. Jared’s “voice” as a developing character is so appealing — his way of expressing surprise, disbelief, and acceptance is incomparable. He refers to himself as a “toaster with a heart.” Bots are the new underclass in this world because after all — they aren’t even human. While the journey is comic (laugh out loud funny much of the time), there are plenty of deep things to think about: What makes us human? What should our relationship with other beings be? What kind of “programming” do we humans have of which are not explicitly aware? In some ways this reminded me of Vonnegut — the speculative and humorous extrapolation of today’s social mores — but with a little more depth in terms of human (or bot) experience and how we treat others. As fun additions, there are some great descriptions of classic movies (without titles) that are fun to see through Jared’s eyes (and try to make the identification), some fun screen-writing tips, and all the details of a futuristic road trip adventure.I have written two other books. ‘Set My Heart To Five’ came out in 2020. The Washington Post review said that I might be ‘Vonnegut’s first true protege’. You’d better believe I have been dining out on that ever since, and will be for the rest of my days. Unlike anything you have ever read before, Set My Heart To Five is a book for anybody who has feelings, loves movies, and likes to laugh and cry and sometimes do both at the same time. It comes uniquely guaranteed to make its readers weep a minimum of 29mls of tears.* I am from Edinburgh in Scotland, but now reside in Los Angeles, California. I have had stopovers along the way in London and San Francisco. I’m a writer and screenwriter, and before I became a full-time writer I was a physician.
