About this deal

And within another two weeks, Sena added two more enticements regarding the 50 Series release. The first announced the pending release of firmware updates to bring all current Mesh products up to the Mesh 2.0 baseline while the second identified a limited time 50R and 50S trade-up program for existing Sena 30K users but limited to US customers only – bummer. I quite like this feature as there is nothing I hate more than constantly plugging things in and manually doing updates via a computer. Keep it simple, and I’m happy. The most powerful upgrade to the 50R voice commands is the new direct, hands-free access to Google or Siri through your smartphone! “Hey Siri, directions to the nearest hotel, please!” “Hey Google, what’s the weather forecast for Sturgis today?” No buttons, no other preliminary commands. The 50R connects to everything Google Assistant and Apple’s Siri have to offer...all while you’re rolling down the highway! Access phone numbers, music apps, or even ask for directions to the world’s largest ball of twine (it’s in Cawker City, KS by the way)! Riding Connected couldn’t be easier. The 50S has a lot of great features, and the range is absolutely outstanding – it’s much better than its main competitor. I’m also really impressed with the simple updating, and while it might not have the very best definition when it comes to music, at 70mph it’s a lot harder to tell any huge difference. Up to three other BT systems are supported by the 50S. Press and hold the Jog Dial for five seconds, the ‘Intercom Pairing’ voice announcement is heard, and a Red flashing LED is seen. If another 50S is being paired, put it into pairing mode; the devices should automatically pair, confirmed by a flashing Blue LED; the session is now live.

Bluetooth intercom is much improved with almost non-existent noise and far less interference overall. As often observed, rider to rider ranges are as good and often better than with Mesh; one road ride had a gap of close to 2.0km between riders without significant signal or audio degradation. Take control of the 50R-02 without lifting a finger. Voice commands give you hands-free control of the 50R, operating select functions, including entering Open Mesh or answering a phone call. Simply say a command, and the 50R will act for you. The 50R supports multi-language voice commands, responding to eight different languages, including English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, and Russian. While the two Bluetooth intercoms paired automatically, I did have an issue with the TomTom – once that had made an announcement, the second intercom (the one not paired to my other devices) couldn’t initiate a conversation, even when the TomTom wasn’t speaking any more. The ‘main’ unit (paired to the sat-nav) was still able to link the two up, so if you don’t disconnect (remember that you’ll only hear the other person when they speak), you won’t be aware of this glitch.

For installation and testing uniformity, another Schuberth C3 Pro, also in the Echo colourway, is the first host for the Sena 50S.

With two Senas connected via Mesh the TomTom seemed to work fine, but I did notice that if either user presses the scroll wheel in, the Mesh connection is disabled as the unit connects via Bluetooth. Press the Mesh button and it reconnects, then disconnects itself, so you need to press the scroll wheel again to turn the Bluetooth connection off. Two microphones are included with the Sena 50R kit – a wired boom and wired (thin wire) microphone, both using modular mini connectors. Here you can see where the ‘riders’ were for the Mesh test. Rider 1 is effectively the tail rider of this test, rider 2 marks the limit of that connection, then rider 3 shows how the Mesh system increases range while keeping everyone in conversation This review focusses on the Sena 50S, though most of the functions are the same if you’re considering the R…Sena identifies that both the Voice Command feature and Siri or Google digital assistant access received enhancements for the Series 50 systems, with the digital assistants now accessed directly. Voice Command This is how you test, validate, and promote a product in real-time. This video testimonial is a good one to watch, as is this blog posting. I have the most trouble with ‘Hey Sena, stop music’, with perhaps a 30% success rate. If I very clearly enunciate the plosive in ‘stop’, it seems to work a bit better, but the device also doesn’t seem to like one command directly following another, so you need to pause a few seconds, then try again, which can be frustrating when you need to shut the music off to speak to someone. Intercom communication with headsets of other manufacturers (limited communication features, the Sena headset is paired as a mobile phone) Trying to cover every eventuality, I also found that, with two 50Ss connected via Bluetooth, music played fine though my headset (and could be shared with the other user), the intercom speech overlaying if you want or interrupting it altogether. The TomTom had no problems cutting into the conversation, but after the message was complete, if music was playing it suddenly went incredibly loud, overdriving the speakers significantly. This is in some way related to having a 50S connected as a Bluetooth intercom, as it didn’t happen with a Sena 10C connected, or when the 50Ss were connected by Mesh. Turning off ‘Audio Multitasking Volume Management’ in the app stops it happening, but if you do experience this, turning the music off then on again will reset it to the normal volume.

Headset pairs with multiple BT devices – mobile phone or other smart device, navigation devices, MP3 players, Sena SR10 two-way radio adapter, or other devices using the Mobile Phone Pairing, Second Mobile Phone Pairing or GPS Pairing procedures Using the direct input controls or the Sena Device Manager does provide alternative means to configure and manage the Series 50 systems, but so far, the Sena 50 Utility App is proving to be the best way – it’s an absolute gem. A poorly fitting helmet may not only be uncomfortable, more noisy and may move around when riding if too big or give headaches etc if it is too small, it is also dangerous. A helmet simply will not protect or perform as designed if the head inside it is not snuggly fitted against the impact absorbing material inside the shell. With real breadth and depth and no attempt is made here to cover App content in detail – that would take another submission itself, so only three features are discussed below. Mesh & Bluetooth Management Hey SIRI. Works 99% of the time if I speak directly into my iPhone 8 mic. Fails 99% of time when speaking via the 50S. This is a HUGE FAIL. I even tried to re-setup SIRI using the 50S mic. No joy. The auxiliary connection might appeal to some users, but I expect any headset to connect all my devices via Bluetooth, so smooth connections here are really important to me, and with the GPS connected through GPS pairing mode, instructions are fed direct to the intercom. With the advanced noise-control, as with your intercom conversations, phone calls should be very clear and not disrupted by too much road noise. There are three intercom modes available to users, ‘Open’ Mesh mode, ‘Private Group’ Mesh, and Bluetooth Intercom.
