The story of Cardinal continues from the previous book. Kirito accepted Healthcliff’s challenge under the conditions that Asuna will be released to him if he wins, and joining the «KoB» if he loses. The match proceeded with each other whittling one another’s life-span, with varying chances that the winner can be either one. The match ended with Kirito’s loss, as «the Living Legend» performed an impossible move in which he moved at a speed that momentarily broke the game. But as Obsidia is more than 3000 km away from Centoria, it would take 3 days for dragons and a month for to complete the trip. Kirito decided to use the second Mechanical Dragon to fly to Obsidia since the situation was pressing and the Integrity Knights were too busy to help. But as Ronye was worried about the safety and the possibility that the event was setup as a trap to attempt assassinate Kirito, Ronye nominated herself to be a guard for Kirito.

Sword Art Online has also cooperated with different crossover titles, card games, and online games to release characters/theme/cards/stages that are related to SAO. On the first day on the job, Kirito had to attend a mandatory training course to present his skills. To his dismay, Kirito discovered that he had to work alongside with the last person he wanted to see: Kuradeel. Kirito awakens to find himself lost in a new world. With the realistic world and his "lost" memories with this world, he questions his own identity and his existence in the world he used to know and the world he is currently in. He soon finds out that this is a virtual world with the name " Underworld", and pursues to find the truth about this world and the objective of Rath for making this realistic world. At their Japan Expo USA panel, Yen Press announced the rights to publish the light novels; the first volume was released on April 22, 2014.
