About this deal

Police Story 2 is a rather strange beast at times. Pitching itself initially as a direct follow up, it leaves the consequences of the first film largely in the first act. A hard to swallow series of events mean that by the end of the first hour Ka-kui has been demoted, quit the force, been incidentally recruited to help out on a job and rehired to a plain clothes detective squad. It’s clunky, going round the houses to get somewhere it could quite easily have ended up with fewer convolutions. That said, the pace of the first act is good. Chan parcels out the action scenes well, and while he doesn’t treat the character of May any better, he finds a bit more for Cheung to do, including a stunt she does herself (the outtakes look painful). She also has a genuinely laugh out loud bit where she angrily follows him into the police station’s shower room. Hong Kong Theatrical Version – Brand new audio commentary with Asian film experts Frank Djeng (NY Asian Film Festival) and F.J. DeSanto Police Story 3: Supercop (dir. Stanley Tong, 1992) – Action superstar Michelle Yeoh ( Everything Everywhere All at Once) joins the series as Inspector Yang Chien-Hua, who teams up with Chan Ka-Kui to take down an international drug ring. With some of the most outrageous stunt sequences ever committed to film, Police Story 3: Supercop is an action masterpiece that must truly be seen to be believed.

Extended Version – Brand new audio commentary with Asian film experts Frank Djeng (NY Asian Film Festival) and F.J. DeSanto UHD presentation of the original Hong Kong theatrical cut [96 mins] from a brand new restoration of the original film elements \ 1080p HD presentation of the alternate US version [91 mins]

The Audio

All three films consistently appear on lists of the best action films ever made, and Eureka Classics is proud to present them all in their worldwide Ultra HD Blu-ray debuts from stunning 4K restorations! Brand new audio commentary for Police Story 3 with Asian film experts Frank Djeng (NY Asian Film Festival) and F.J. DeSanto | Hong Kong Theatrical Version Restoration Trailer - original trailer for the 4K restoration of Police Story. With music. (4 min). It’s not very often that a sequel to an action movie asks its hero to deal with the real world consequences of what they did in the first film. As Police Story 2 opens (well, following a montage of all the most awesome bits from the previous film), we find Chan Ka-kui demoted to traffic duty because of immense amounts his heroics cost the city in damages, and his old foe Chu Tao out on compassionate release, having been given months to live. Chu Tao’s goons threaten both Ka-kui and his still put upon girlfriend May (a returning Maggie Cheung), but his attention is soon taken up by a bomber threatening a major company.

So, we come to the all important question. Is this actually worth the money? The answer is a resounding "YES!" followed by some discreet throat clearing and an almost apologetic ". . .and no". Presented in an aspect ratio of 2.35:1 and encoded with HEVC / H.265, Police Story arrives on 4K Blu-ray courtesy of Eureka Entertainment.Eureka Entertainment has already blessed us with a standard Blu-ray box set of the first two Police Story films. In my original review of Police Story 3, I stated it was absolutely crying out for a restoration and re-release. In fact, I still have my original VHS version so I can watch it uncut! Not only has my prayer been answered, it has been delivered in glorious, ultra-high definition 4K in this new box set! Lines, along with selected archival materials. Police Story 3: Supercop” co-stars Michelle Yeoh (sometimes credited as Michelle Khan) as mainland Chinese Interpol Inspector “Jessica Hana Yang”. Yeoh had established herself as a very capable action actress in films such as “ Police Assassins/Yes Madam“, “Royal Warriors” and “ Magnificent Warriors”. She would achieve worldwide fame in acclaimed productions such as “ Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon“, and “ Tomorrow Never Dies“, and more recently “ Shang Chi and the Ten Rings” and the smash hit “ Everything Everywhere All at Once“. reimagined" as Amos Burke, Secret Agent for its final season, in a seeming response to the spy craze that had swept the globe in the Each disc presents a 3840x2160/24p BT.2020 image in the film's theatrical aspect ratio of widescreen 2.4:1, and uses a Wide Colour Gamut (WCG), High Dynamic Range and Dolby Vision, and is encoded using the HEVC (H.265) codec. Criterion debuts a new 4K scan with this release, something long overdue for all of Chan’s golden age work given its Blu-ray treatment to date. It’s instantly obvious how sensational this work is. The camera pans over the shantytown and the immensity of the resolution defines homes as much as grass. It’s incredible.Genre expert Frank Djeng brings his thoughts about Police Story III via commentary over the Hong Kong cut. Note the US edit simply titled Supercop is here too, in 4K. Featurettes on the stars include Chan, Yeoh, Stanley Tong, and Ken Lo. Archival bonuses include a Tong interview, outtakes, a nifty Guy Laroche commercial from 1984 featuring Chan and Yeoh, then trailers galore. Of interest is the US screener promo, a rarely seen extra. Vision and/or HDR can add some really appealing highlights in the warmer end of the spectrum. Conversely, some of the film, notably its opening So, my advice would be: if you don't own these films, then this is the boxset you need. If you already have the first two films on blu-ray, then this set is redundant. I'd buy the standalone Eureka release of PS: Supercop. There's not that much appreciable difference between it and the 4K, and it's a lot cheaper. Police Story III: Supercop has Ka-Kui transferred to a specialist team who are trying to apprehend a huge drug baron. Ka-Kui goes undercover to help the drug baron’s lieutenant escape from prison and then goes deep to find out the overall plans, along with fellow agent Jessica Yang (Michelle Yeoh). Of course, everything goes wrong when they get their cover blown, which leads to some spectacular stunts involving a train, a dirt bike, and a helicopter. installment (with an early overt reference to James Bond, just to make the connection even more obvious).

Look, if you don't own these films and are looking for the definitive collection, then this is absolutely it. It's all three films, presented in 4K, with more on-disc extras than you could possibly want. Alternate version of Police Story 2, presented in a 2K digital transfer for the first time from a subtitled 35 mm Hong Kong–release print The final sequences of each film are unique. The first movie features the famous finale in the Wing On Plaza shopping mall in Tsim Sha Tsui. The leaps and falls onto the metal escalators are still wince-inducing over three decades on. Each disc in the set comes with two excellent audio commentaries from some familiar names like Frank Djeng, who is always enjoyable to listen and filled with knowledge on these films, as well as Arne Venema and Mike Leeder who have a great, casual banter together that make them very listenable. Additionally, there are multiple cuts of the films, from export cuts to original Hong Kong Cuts and more (the alternate cuts are all in HD). So, Eureka has come through once again with a must-have collectible set for these classics. Please note that all of the screencaptures that appear with this article are taken from the 4K Blu-ray and are downscaled to 1080p. POLICE STORY 3: SUPERCOP New & Exclusive Trailer

The 4K transfers don’t always have quite the pop of detail that the very best of the format can deliver, but make no mistake, these films look better here than they likely ever have. The picture is incredibly clean and detail is often spectacular. Even compared with the blu-ray releases (not included with this set), wide shots reveal a wealth of sharp detail that makes the stunt work look even more incredible and the explosions even more vivid. was notable for its conceit of naming each episode "Who Killed. . .?", with that ellipsis being filled by that week's victim. It also arguably attracted With the various audio and different cut viewing options at hand, this really is the definitive release of all three films. All three pictures are presented in their original 2:35:1 aspect ratio, and they look as good as one could possibly expect, given the age of the source material. We get multiple cuts of all three films and bags of other extras, so there's nothing to complain about there. Eureka done good - lavishing as much attention on the films and additional material as they skrimped on the physical stuff. small screen "wannabes" that had started to replace westerns and traditional cop shows as the default genre du jour.
