There’s an absolute ton of different types of moth traps on the market, all for different situations, with the majority being quite expensive. They’re a specialist bit of wildlife surveying equipment, and as with anything, generally you pay for what you get, but if you’re just starting out, and don’t want to quite commit to the weird and wonderful life of a moth-er, this can be a daunting step. For garden trapping, there is the issue of nuisance to consider. Some moth-trap bulbs generate a lot of light, others e.g. actinic bulbs (a fluorescent tube producing actinic light) give off little visible light and therefore, are much less likely to annoy your neighbours. There are also the economic and environmental costs of running your moth trap to bear in mind. Higher wattage bulbs may attract more moths, but they also use more electricity. So clothes moth traps are best used in warmer weather (normally 65 degrees or more) but there may still be the need to use treatments where larvae are still causing damage outside warmer times. Where do Clothes Moths Come From? The trap itself, however, attracts lots of moths with a good light. I haven't tried it in damp conditions because I don't know how the light would react, and the sides of the trap are fabric, so don't want to risk it. But, for trapping moths in the same position every time on a guaranteed dry night, it's great. The Demi Diamond moth traps were recommended to me by two friends, who had also suffered a previous clothes moth outbreak (something that seems increasingly common in London!). Wash clothes that contain larvae or eggs. Use hot water and high heat in the dryer, if possible.
