About this deal

The second number expresses the number of threads per unit of distance in between these threads. You can also refer to it as the thread pitch. If you have a 4-30 x 0.10, the threads per inch (TPI) is 30. There are generally three dimensions that you need to know when sourcing bolts – diameter, length and thread length. Spanner size is also useful. We use the M2 screw in small items, such as electrical equipment, cameras, and mobile phones. They’re also common in laptops and the like. The “M” corresponds to the outer diameter in the metric system, so an M2 has a diameter of 2mm. Do keep in mind that in reality, the actual diameter would vary between 1.9mm to 2mm because of manufacturing tolerances. Oberg, Erik; Jones, Franklin D.; Horton, Holbrook L.; Ryffel, Henry H. (2000), Machinery's Handbook (26thed.), New York: Industrial Press Inc., ISBN 0-8311-2635-3.

On any bolt that isn’t countersunk, the length is measured from the underside of the head to the tip of the thread.Brass, nylon, stainless steel, steel, aluminum, and titanium are a few of the materials used in fabricating this type. M4 screw size

Pitch is the distance from the crest of one thread to the next or the distance from one thread groove to the next, measured from crest to crest. Pitch is also described as the number of threads per inch. For bolts between 125mm and 200mm long - multiply the diameter by 2 and add 12mm – this is the minimum length that the thread is likely to be. D min = D maj − 2 ⋅ 5 8 ⋅ H = D maj − 5 3 8 ⋅ P ≈ D maj − 1.082532 ⋅ P D p = D maj − 2 ⋅ 3 8 ⋅ H = D maj − 3 3 8 ⋅ P ≈ D maj − 0.649519 ⋅ P {\displaystyle {\begin{aligned}D_{\text{min}}&=D_{\text{maj}}-2\cdot {\frac {5}{8}}\cdot H=D_{\text{maj}}-{\frac {5{\sqrt {3}}}{8}}\cdot P\approx D_{\text{maj}}-1.082532\cdot P\\[3pt]D_{\text{p}}&=D_{\text{maj}}-2\cdot {\frac {3}{8}}\cdot H=D_{\text{maj}}-{\frac {3{\sqrt {3}}}{8}}\cdot P\approx D_{\text{maj}}-0.649519\cdot P\end{aligned}}} For the most accurate length, measure using millimeters from where the screw head sits to the tip. You don’t always measure from the top of the head. It depends on where the head would sit on the surface. Use a ruler or a measuring tape to get the most accurate measurement. In an external (male) thread (e.g. on a bolt), the major diameter D maj and the minor diameter D min define maximum dimensions of the thread. This means that the external thread must end flat at D maj, but can be rounded out below the minor diameter D min. Conversely, in an internal (female) thread (e.g. in a nut), the major and minor diameters are minimum dimensions; therefore the thread profile must end flat at D min but may be rounded out beyond D maj. In practice this means that one can measure the diameter over the threads of a bolt to find the nominal diameter D maj, and the inner diameter of a nut is D min. For bolts longer than 200mm - multiply the diameter by 2 and add 25mm – this is the minimum length that the thread is likely to be. The ISO metric screw thread is the most commonly used type of general-purpose screw thread worldwide. [1] They were one of the first international standards agreed when the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) was set up in 1947. [ citation needed] Sheet metal screws secure sheet metal. They are fully threaded and are available for use with self-drilling points and pre-drilled holes. Machine

On countersunk bolts the length is measured from the top of the head to the tip of the thread. Thread length The relationship between the height H and the pitch P is found using the following equation where θ is half the included angle of the thread, in this case 30°: [3] H = 1 2 tan ⁡ θ ⋅ P = 3 2 ⋅ P ≈ 0.866025 ⋅ P {\displaystyle H={\frac {1}{2\tan \theta }}\cdot P={\frac {\sqrt {3}}{2}}\cdot P\approx 0.866025\cdot P} ISO 965-5: Limits of sizes for internal screw threads to mate with hot-dip galvanized external screw threads with maximum size of tolerance position h before galvanizing The first number is the largest diameter measurement of the thread. For example, a 4-30 x 0.10 has a diameter of 0.112 inches. It is because 0.060 + (4 x 0.013) = 0.112 inches. Take the diameter by measuring the thread’s width in fractions of an inch using a measuring tape or ruler. A gauge number or fraction of an inch represents the diameter in the imperial system.

The first step in measuring the length is finding a surface to lay it down on an even surface. Start measuring wherever the head would rest when fully embedded into something. In some cases, you may need to hang it off the edge of a surface to lay it flat. Ones with a pan, round, or truss head should be measured from the bottom of the head to the tip. Ones with a flat or oval head should be measured from the top to the tip. Hex head ones are an exception to this rule, which means you need to measure from the bottom of the head. ISO 965-4: Limits of sizes for hot-dip galvanized external screw threads to mate with internal screw threads tapped with tolerance position H or G after galvanizing The gauge indicates the diameter. A larger number means a bigger diameter, whereas a smaller number means a smaller diameter. For example, a number 3 is smaller than a number 11.
