Quentin Tarantino sparked renewed interest in this Spanish horror film, putting it on many of his top ten lists and naming a chapter of his “Kill Bill Vol. 1” book after it. DirectorVicente Aranda, the film attained cult status not only for its erotic horror themes, but for its rejection of fascism in Francoist Spain. ThisSwedish / Swiss / German horror film was directed by sexploitation pioneer Joseph W. Sarno, who had a fruitful adult film career under various pseudonyms, working with Annie Sprinkle, Ron Jeremy, and Harry Reems (“Deep Throat”). A women’s cult resurrects their vampire queen, using the willing young vessel played by Swedish actress Marie Forså. For too long we have had too much immigration': Voters in Holland react to election win of 'Dutch Trump' Geert Wilders... whose rise to power has left the once liberal nation deeply divided

Frances Benjamin Johnston’s 1896 cigarette-smoking, beer stein–toting, ankle-revealing self-portrait is a strong case in point: Johnston’s playful self-presentation in this photograph defied the more demure, ladylike norms of her time. Offering information about Johnston’s life as a successful photographer— she is described in the 1974 monograph A Talent for Detail as an “eccentric,” “bohemian” woman who never married—JEB hinted during her slide show that Johnston may have been a lesbian. Though not able to offer clear evidence of Johnston’s sexuality, JEB nonetheless felt that assuming Johnston was heterosexual was equally tenuous.

Prolific Spanish filmmakerJesús Franco was known for stylish exploitation films, and cast his favorite leading lady Soledad Miranda (billed as Susann Korda)in what would be the fourth of eight collaborations between the two. Franco transposed Bram Stoker’s short story “Dracula’s Guest” to 1970s Istanbul, where Dracula’s heir sets her sights on American lawyer Linda (Ewa Strömberg).

Child dies in horror Surrey car crash between Tesla and Vauxhall Astra - as cops arrest 'uninsured and unlicenced' man, 20, for 'dangerous driving' Rolls-Royce is GONE in 30 seconds! Moment key-less car thieves steal luxury SUV on owner's drivewayAlthough some of the fascinating women pictured are understood to be lesbian couples, in some cases there is little information about their sexual orientation - nonetheless it is quite extraordinary that these images survive as many old photos of same-sex couples are believed to have been destroyed by family members. This article and photographs were originally published in Aperture‘s spring 2015 issue, “ Queer,” under the title “Queer Looking.” Set in the 18th century and taking place on an isolated island in Brittany, two women create a world of their own in Portrait of a Lady on Fire. This stunning film directed by revered filmmaker Céline Sciamma, follows Marianne (Noémie Merlant) and Héloïse (Adèle Haenel) as their budding romance grows. Visually gorgeous and full of deepest depths of yearning and love, this is a romantic classic you won’t soon forget. There is, unfortunately, no way for contemporary audiences to confirm Sappho's sexuality or the details of her love life. Regardless of this, LGBTQ+readers still feel a strong identification with her work, fuelled by a desire to find a common experience in a long history of oppression and erasure. The search for queer female representation is ongoing in the history of art as well. Part revenge tale and part redemption song, Lizzie took years for indie darling Chloe Sevigny ( Boys Don't Cry, Big Love, Love and Friendship) and out writer Bryce Kass to shepherd to the screen. Although there were several iterations along the way, the final version of the film about the ax killer from the tiny town of Fall River, Mass., couldn't have come at a timelier moment. A film that shares a lineage with the queer true crime-based films of the '90s like Heavenly Creatures and Sister My Sister, Lizzie is a fresh take on the "murderous lesbians'" trope. The movie also fits right in with the #MeToo era, with Lizzie and her maid/love interest/co-conspirator Bridget (Kristen Stewart) literally bashing toxic masculinity in the face.

So that’s it for queer representation in Hollywood pre-Code movies, I mean who else do we have to talk about? No one whatsoever. Oh, I’m totally kidding. We haven’t even touched on the glorious Marlene Dietrich Join us for future articles where we look at Dietrich’s contribution to LGBT history as well as a look at the tender 1931 German film, Madchen In Uniform… It's more than a kind of first love. It's a first everything: first friendship, first real companion, intellectual companion. There's a trust from the first moment they look at each other, that this person understands me. And in a way that they've never had before," Waterston tells The Advocate. Kena (Samantha Mugatsia) and Ziki (Sheila Munyiva) are the daughters of two rival Nairobi politicians who fall in love in the 2018 movie Rafiki. This film about young love in the face of adversity strikes a chord. But watching these two girls fall in love and fight for their love to the end is poignant and moving. Captured at a time when homosexuality was considered taboo, these remarkable images defiant women who flouted convention in the nineteenth and twentieth century. I felt like a lot of the world outside of Fall River was changing, but in that Calvinist community, she was really smart. She had a lot to say and no one to say it to," Sevigny said. "That's where we wanted to build the relationship with Bridget for her -- that Bridget was finally an outlet. It felt like she deserved that love and an escape from her horrid existence."

Bloodlust and lesbians — what could be a more winning combination? In honor of Halloween month, the programmers at New York arthouse cinema The Quad are showcasing 12 staples of the lesbian vampire genre, because who doesn’t love a broad with bite? Titled “ A Woman’s Bite: Cinema’s Sapphic Vampires,” the series also complements an excellent Jean Rollin retrospective, Très Outré: The Sinister Visions of Jean Rollin, the French horror auteur who put women at the center of his lush, gothic cinema. “A Woman’s Bite” runs October 26-November 1 at The Quad. What follows are examples of sculptors who may have been homosexual and sculptures of renowned, possibly queer, women – some arguably more explicit in their identity than others. Teen joyriders' crashed a VAN into our bungalow... I was flung off the sofa and my sister was buried in rubble: Cops arrest five teenagers after 'bloodbath' In 1979, JEB (Joan E. Biren) published her first book, Eye to Eye: Portraits of Lesbians. The groundbreaking collection of photographs introduced mainstream society to ordinary lesbians working, playing, raising families, and striving for acceptance. Filled with pictures and personal stories, Eye to Eye also contained the writings of renowned authors like Adrienne Rich, Joan Nestle, and others. The book broke barriers and helped propel a movement that centered lesbian lives rather then pushing them to the margins of society.

Whenever Todd Haynes’ unspeakably beautiful Patricia Highsmith adaptation comes to mind, it brings some of the novel’s last words along with it: “It would be Carol, in a thousand cities, a thousand houses, in foreign lands where they would go together, in heaven and hell.” In that light, a spot on a list of the decade’s best films hardly seems like much of a reach. Marking the first time the lesbian vampire appears onscreen, Universal Pictures was well aware that its “Dracula” sequel had sapphic overtones. In “The Celluloid Closet,” gay film historian Vito Russo noted the studio stoked the flames in its initial marketing. Russo also cites the film as an early example of the (albeit negative) predatory homosexual trope. I had a lot of empathy toward her. She had a rich inner life and she didn't have a lot of outlets," Sevigny told The Advocate about Lizzie, who's depicted as being an avid reader and a patron of the arts. The images capture Victorian and early-twentieth century females in intimate poses and showing a daring level of openness with one another for the era they were living in.

Mexican cult horror directorJuan López Moctezuma castCristina Ferrare, later a top TV host, as a bisexual artist who visits Mexico with a bloodthirsty mission. The film stars John Carradine as her estranged vampire father, and features cinematography byMiguel Garzón (“Highway Patrolman,”“Red Dawn”). Directed by Michael Almereyda (“Twister”) and starring Elina Löwensohn as Nadja and Peter Fonda as Van Helsing, this ’90s arthouse horror features a David Lynch cameo as a morgue attendant. Lynch also lends his name as executive producer. Perhaps it’s trite to say that “representation matters,” but some things are cliché because they’re true. The first time I ever saw lesbians onscreen was when my high school’s Gay Bisexual Straight Alliance played part of the first scene of the original L Word series. (The “sweet little figs” scene, in case you were wondering—the girls who get it get it.) Even so, it wasn’t until years later, when I first saw Blue Is the Warmest Color , that I actually found a queer story that reminded me of my own.
