About this deal

The Lifeline Pro workstand claims to blend pro-level build quality with ease of use, at a price that’s appealing to the home mechanic. It also boasts a maximum bike weight limit of 40kg, making it suitable for e-bikes, and has a wider range of height adjustment than most competing workstands too. Lifeline uses a mix of heavy duty aluminium and steel tubing to aid long-term durability and deal with heavier e-bikes, and at 9.5kg its weight is noticeable. It is 4kg heavier than more portable lightweight options, and it measures 1.5m when folded, so it’s not an ideal choice for the car boot. However, this is not an issue for home use, where the excellent clamp is a highlight, and the fact that the stand can be raised high enough to create a comfortable working height even if you’re over 6ft. Reasons to avoid: Only works for bikes with hollow axles. Can be a touch unstable with heavy bikes.

Clamping a bike by the seatpost can mean having to move the post to secure enough 'real estate' for the clamp – risking misalignment of the saddle, returning it to the wrong height or ultimately stripping the clamp bolts through repeated tightening/loosening. With modern bike-fit principles setting seat height to within fractions of a millimetre, you don't want to be getting this wrong... Well-featured throughout, the lever on the main clamp is particularly nice, spinning to tighten before finishing with a cam-style flip to allow for easy attachment of the bicycle. Once mounted into the stand, retention of the bike is relatively solid, as is the stability provided by the three mid-length legs. And don't assume that it's automatically 'safer' once you've got your bike home. Many bike thefts happen while a bike is parked outside the owner's home - usually because people assume the area around their home is more secure, so take fewer precautions. Horizontal wall-mount models typically mount to the wall and hold the bike horizontally, parallel to it. These bike hangers usually have support arms with cradles that hold the bike by its frame. The bikes take up more horizontal space than a vertical orientation, although they typically only protrude as far into your space as the width of the bike's handlebar. Horizontal models are highly versatile and work with a wide range of bike styles and sizes, although complex mountain bike frames and oddly weighted bikes may present some fit issues. The PRO Bike Tool Bike Hanger is a quality horizontal wall-mount. The Delta Cycle Michelangelo has a creative design that holds two bikes horizontally and supports itself with the force of gravity and doesn't require drilling into your walls. Ceiling Super stable, height adjustable and featuring a built-in tool tray. Durable steel construction Folds easily for storage Includes adjustable tool tray.Weight: 9.5kg | Working height: 120-198cm | Clamp offset: N/A | Leg footprint: 100cm | Rating: 10/10 Decathlon is always a great source of bargains, and this B’Twin 500 Bike Workstand is no exception. Nothing else will let you get both wheels of your bike off the ground, and ready to work on, for less cash. The working height is really good, too, so it’s a comfortable stand to use. You also need to make sure the clamp is rotatable so it can hold your bike at different angles. This is really useful when gravity-bleeding disc brakes for example. Does a workstand take up a lot of space when not in use? The Jobsworth Bicycle Repair Workstand has an adjustable height of 107cm to 188cm and is strong enough to hold bikes weighing up to 25KG (55lbs).With a super stable four leg, you can work on your entire bike easily and make cleaning difficult areas such as your drivetrain a simple task. The Jobsworth Bicycle Repair Workstand’s tough steel construction ensures long lasting durability and the entire stand folds away for convenient storage when not in use. Including an adjustable tool tray the Jobsworth Bicycle Repair Workstand has everything you need to take the strain out of bike cleaning and maintenance at home.

With a delivery price well in excess of what most people are prepared to pay for an entire bicycle repair stand, the Hirobel Carbon Frame Clamp is going to remain pretty rare even among diehard home workshop fettlers. But if you have a fleet of bikes, strange carbon aero shapes, or very short exposed lengths of seatpost, this may well be the workstand accessory you've been looking for all these years.

While most workstands will accommodate most bikes, owners of carbon fibre bikes should shop carefully for one that will lift a bike clamped by the seatpost to working height, or use a race-style repair stand. The best mountain bike repair work stands make working on your mountain bike a much more comfortable and convenient experience. Whether it’s regular maintenance, installing an upgrade, or fixing a broken part, a decent work stand elevates your bike off the ground to improve access and let you spin the wheels and operate the drivetrain while working on the gears and brakes. And because most home work stands are lightweight and foldable, they don’t take up too much room when not in use. Unfortunately my seatpost is very crowded, and as my bike lives in the workstand when at home, the jaws have worn away the paint on my getting to work bike, not so much on the good bike, less time in there and the front mech cable stops stops her moving. Now, I'm about to get my new bike, and while I'm going to try and not be too precious about her paintjob, I don't want to do something that will hurt her unnecessarily. What would people use to line the jaws to stop this? I've given bit of old latex tubes a go, and that seems good, but there is a bit of rubbery flex. Anything better? I know it's the filth that grinds, so keeping things cleaner will help, but do I have to buy a non work stand for the majority of her sitting in the living room?
