About this deal

But he can't – for now, at least – be a woman. "We should create roles for women, not just turn a man into a woman," Broccoli said, a sentiment Craig echoed in a couple of No Time To Die promo interviews. The show features all your favourite Bond songs such as Goldfinger, Diamonds Are Forever, Live and Let Die and Nobody Does It Better, performed with the most authentic and dedicated arrangements to the originals ever heard, but with such passion, enthusiasm and flair: you can’t help but be wowed. This show will also focus on three huge anniversaries: From Russia With Love (60th), Live and Let Die (50th) and Octopussy (40th) with musical tributes to the scores, as well as hearing memories from our special guests who appeared in the films.

We’ve tried looking at younger people in the past," Wilson said. "But trying to visualise it doesn’t work. Remember, Bond’s already a veteran. He’s had some experience. He’s a person who has been through the wars, so to speak. He’s probably been in the SAS or something." Of course, Broccoli previously stated that the search for the next James Bond would begin in 2022 after Craig’s dramatic exit prompted speculation about who would become the world’s greatest spy in his wake. He's placed himself in the conversation on a couple of occasions too. "I mean, ultimately, as a young British lad who loves cinema, I'd love to be James Bond,” he told Variety in February 2021. “So, you know, I'm just putting that out there. I look pretty good in a suit. I'd be like a really short James Bond." And as we’ve mentioned previously, it’s probably time to get a Short King in the role (Daniel Craig, at 5 foot 10, is the shortest to take on the role so far).

Casino Royale was first adapted for the screen as part of the anthology television series Climax Mystery Theater in 1954. However, the James Bond film franchise wasn’t born until later. In 1961, film producers Albert R. Broccoli and Harry Saltzman founded Eon Productions to adapt the James Bond novels. He's directing and starring in the action thriller Monkey Man that's out later this year, which would make him the first actor to have directed a film before playing Bond, but it does point to a more general leaning away from the kind of giant machine Bond represents. He's said as much in the past too: "I don't know what I would like to play," he admitted in a 2016 roundtable, "but I know what I'm afraid of playing: those big studio movies."

Lowden, though, might be a dark horse successor. He's got form in both heavyweight dramas ( Denial, '71, Small Axe) and big action-y British films ( Dunkirk) and think-y period pieces ( Mary Queen of Scots, War & Peace). He's even been a beefed up bad lad with a heart of gold ( Fighting With My Family). But Boyle still thinks the series has a bright future (even if he doesn’t see himself being involved in it), and he suggested two actors who could take over Daniel Craig in the role. One is Robert Pattinson – someone who has been suggested many times before – and the other is Paapa Essiedu, the award-winning actor from Michaela Coel’s I May Destroy You and Alex Garland’s Men. Boyle had seen him perform in the play A Number at the Old Vic a few days previously, and put him forward as a potential candidate. We love Idris," Broccoli told Variety at the end of August 2022. "The thing is, it's going to be a couple of years off. And when we cast Bond, it's a 10-, 12-year commitment. So he's probably thinking, 'Do I really want that thing?' Not everybody wants to do that. It was hard enough getting [Daniel Craig to do it]." He's taken to talking about Bond with a breezy nonchalance: "it’s lots of quite fun and bemusing media coverage," he told Variety in June 2023. "There’s nothing concrete behind it." Hot on his heels is the ex-Man of Steel, Henry Cavill. The Londoner’s recent conscious uncoupling from Superman and the DC universe – and to lesser extent, his departure from Netflix’s smash hit series The Witcher – suddenly leaves space on his schedule for the kind of heavy-lifting (and publicity duties) demanded by playing Ian Fleming’s legendary spy.Ejiofor's Bond would, you feel, make for a more cerebral spy than Craig's man mountain. He's certainly got the kind of acting chops which Bond now demands – recall 12 Years a Slave, and a string of Shakespeare and Chekhov productions at the National, Donmar and Royal Court theatres – and could recentre the character with more of the froideur and stillness which Fleming first gave him.

Global James Bond Day is observed annually on October 5 to commemorate the release of Dr. No in 1962. It first began in 2012, when Eon Productions celebrated the golden anniversary of the film franchise. Special events were held around the globe; they included the official release of the new theme song, “Skyfall” by Adele. Since then, James Bond enthusiasts all over the world have celebrated Global James Bond Day every year.

If he gets the role, the magnificently-haired Londoner would represent the most luxuriantly-maned Bond since Brosnan. And the rumour mill has had him firmly in the running since McMafia and War and Peace first introduced the UK’s living rooms to him. Most of his best work so far has been on the stage or small screen – he’s currently playing a proper wrong’un in the BBC’s crime series Happy Valley – although he put in an eye-catching performance in 2020’s Stalin-era journalism drama Mr Jones . 5.
