Mechanics – the original "Maggie the mechanic" story, in which Maggie travels to Africa with a group of mechanics and becomes caught in the middle of a political revolution. Introduced Jaime's artwork and storytelling style. In 2006, Publishers Weekly ranked Hernandez' work Ghost of Hoppers second on its critics' poll of the best comic books of 2006. [9] Awards [ edit ] While not a complete collection, this volume exemplifies why Jaime is a master in the comics medium. What's really fascinating is watching how the stories and characters evolve. In the beginning, the rendering of the girls tended towards the cute and pleasantly curvy, and their world - while grounded in a Chicano neighborhood with a Cal punk aesthetic - had a distinct sci-fi element to it. More realism, though, seeped into the world as the comic evolved. The narratives and characters became more layered and nuanced, and time took its toll. The stories get better as Maggie starts putting on weight. is it bad to say that I want more Hopey and Maggie? I wish we had seen more of them, but I suppose a lot of it was supposed to be how they drifted apart and still managed to find each other at the end. But it was just frustrating since they were amazing together as individuals, let alone when they were dating. I also wanted a bit more detail on their lives apart with more focus, rather than that rotating point of view.

I don’t like to choose between brothers, but Jaime Hernandez is one of the greatest drawers of human faces and human want on the planet." John Hodgman Hoppers 13 follows the tangled lives of a group of primarily chicano characters, from their teenage years in the early days of the California punk scene to the present day. Hoppers, or Huerta, is a fictional city based on the Hernandezes' home town of Oxnard, California. Two memorable members of Jaime's cast are Margarita "Maggie" Luisa Chascarrillo and Esperanza "Hopey" Leticia Glass, whose on-again, off-again romance is a focus for many Hoppers 13 storylines. The series is also often called Locas (Spanish for "crazy women") because of the many quirky female characters depicted. We’re still not accepted. There have been breakthroughs. They give us a movie, but at the same time, they want to put our children in cages. Artist Harry Gamboa Jr. has said that there is a vacuum of representation when it comes to Mexican Americans — and that this vacuum is easily filled with misperception. It started because I liked to draw women, but now I find that I like to write women as well. And when I’m told by women readers that I portray women in a way that’s natural and convincing, I’m very happy to hear it. And the "will they/wont they" side of Maggie and Hopey's relationship is still there, with Maggie trying to test the waters and see if she can rekindle some of that old magic. But as stated, things are different, and you cant really go home again without it being something new and different.

Los Bros… have been responsible for some of the smartest, best-drawn, most indelible comics of the past 30 years…” Douglas Wolk, TIME/Techland Jaime's characters are so convincing and his stories so compelling that it is easy to overlook his greatest strength: the most economically handsome drawing style in comics." Booklist Esther Chascarillo: Maggie's younger sister. Maggie calls her "Esther Babies" or "Babies". She has a brief relationship with Speedy. Harvey Awards". Harvey Awards. Harvey Awards". Harvey Awards. Archived from the original on 18 August 2015 . Retrieved 13 June 2015. Locas is, for the most part, the story of Margarita Luisa Chascarillo (known as Maggie, Perla, Maggot and more!) and Esperanza Glass (called Hopey, and don't you forget it!) as their lives evolve, shift and change over the course of an indeterminate number of years. Where Gilbert Hernandez's Palomar operated on a level of community and family, Locas is more focused on individual identity and individual connections. It's a fascinating character study, simply to see all of the contradictions that make up Maggie and Hopey (and most of their supporting cast), how two best of friends can be so similar and yet so different, and how they can alternately be completely unable to function without the other and yet be utterly unwilling to stand one another's presence over squabbles big and small. Theresa "Terry" Downe: talented, cold, pretty guitar player who still pines for ex-girlfriend Hopey. For the Love of Carmen – a one-issue meditation on the marriage of Heraclio and Carmen Calderon, citizens of Palomar.Jaime's] stories never fail to entertain, but their claim on literature is due to Hernandez's bracing realism. His virtuoso drawings present characters of intelligence, wit, and human frailty who confront each other—and the reader—with such honesty and genuine tenderness that one may find it hard to believe she/he is reading a comic book.” Publishers Weekly After having read through this whole book again just now, I’ll just run through some notable aspects that stand out to me in these stories: Jaime Hernandez' work always inspires. Real characters, magical worlds, bold art. As a student filmmaker his creations helped me to understand visual storytelling." Darren Aronofsky The narrative loops in and out of the trajectory of their relationship, mostly chronological, but with some swerves in there that force you to pay attention. There's one dream-notadream-dream (?) sequence in particular late in the book that had me scratching my head, prompting my own BFF to say, "YOU DON'T QUESTION JAIME HERNANDEZ!" So just accept, at face value, that even when you think you understand, you probably don't (unless you've been living in this world for years, I'm guessing). It might have been that we were raised by our mom and her grandmother, and our mom had a bunch of sisters," says Gilbert. "We saw the world through women's eyes."Human Diastrophism (also known as Blood of Palomar) – Palomar's residents hunt for a serial killer as Luba finds herself helplessly in love with a young construction worker, and hard-partying Tonantzín becomes politically active. Published in book form under the title Blood of Palomar. You can see the progression of how the characters have evolved physically over time,” says Miranda. “One of the things that makes their comic book so compelling is that these are never static people, these are people who age, they gain weight, they lose weight, they change their hair. It’s just great to feel that they evolve like real people.” I'm really running out of ways to heap praise on these books but they're great, both in story and art with some of the richest characters in comics. Jaime doesn't throw any softballs, either. It would have been easy for him to put Maggie and Hopey together volumes ago but the stories wouldn't have been as good as what we have now, with Maggie meandering through life and Hopey becoming responsible with a wife and kid. Fritz, one of the characters from Gilbert’s “Palomar” series, also has her own series of standalone graphic novels featuring the many roles she plays in the series’ B-movies. This series includes:
