Action cameras have a bad habit of leaving video clips with odd-looking gradients in skies as the frame errs closer to the sun. Or leaving very significant blown out areas in clouds on bright days. It’s because the small sensors of these cameras have relatively low dynamic range. The Insta360 X3’s HDR mode all but fixes this, at least compared to the standard shooting mode, by merging two exposures per frame.

Devices that do not meet the above requirements may still be able to use the app to control the camera, however, performance of some processor-intensive and AI-powered features may be sub-optimal. You can just be walking along, dropping the camera to ground level, poking it through archways, raising it above head height and it just smooths everything out beautifully. It doesn’t matter if the camera is tilted, twisted or even horizontal – the 6-axis gyro keeps everything flat and level.Insta360’s editing tools are fun and fairly easy to use as well. If you’re an influencer mostly interested in filming yourself, there’s a new Me mode that automatically keeps you center frame, without the need for any editing later, and a new Active HDR mode aims to bring out deep shadow detail that might otherwise be lost.Having said that, and despite all its great new features, the Insta360 X3 does feel like an evolution of the concept rather than a giant leap forward. For us, that’s only likely to come with 12K capture and the ability to reframe and export 4K movies. For now, though, the X3 is still just about the best, friendliest and most exciting 360 camera on the market.

The X3 has had some physical upgrades too. The most obvious is the larger 2.9-inch touchscreen display, and if you think the memory card and battery door is harder to open than normal, that’s because the camera has now been waterproofed to a depth of 10m/33ft. Storage: MicroSD UHS-I V30 speed class, exFAT format SD cards with a max storage of 1TB are recommended. Like most Insta360 launches, we’ve also come across a few bugs. It has frozen on a few occasions, and one low-light mode clip was rendered unreadable for some reason. However, these mostly cropped up when handling footage after a shoot, not actually during capture.

Higher Resolution Sensor

Photo Format: insp (can be exported via mobile app or desktop Studio), DNG RAW (PureShot photos must be edited on desktop) We found the process fastest on a laptop, as mouse control just feels that bit more precise than on a phone-size touchscreen. 360-degree edited clips are set at 1080p when exporting from the phone app or Insta360 Studio, which may seem too limited when maximum res is 5.7K. However, we saw little obvious benefit after manually changing this to 4K resolution in the desktop Insta360 Studio software. And if you’re looking to produce remotely normal-looking videos, you’re not going to be using all of that raw 5.7K information anyway. The Insta360 X3 uses an 1800maH battery, notably higher capacity than the 1600mAh of the GoPro Max. Insta360 claims this can last 81 minutes in the 360-degree, 5.7K resolution mode.
