About this deal

The sausage usually used is the traditional Bratwurst. They are now easily available from Lidl or Aldi and Tesco. You can serve them with and without skin. Away from the chippy, another avenue for this combo is at McDonald's where you can dip the fast-food giant's famous fries into its sweet curry sauce. In the words of Berlin’s Currywurst Museum director, “No other German dish inspires such excitement.” That sums up the ever popular Currywurst. Where Did Currywurst Originate? Replace 1/2 teaspoon of Sweet Paprika with 1/2 teaspoon of Hot Paprika if you want someextra heat. Using a little cayenne pepper would likely work too but I didn’t test that.

Currywurst has been a German institution since its invention in Berlin in 1949 by Herta Heuwer. She lived in the British military sector of Berlin after World War II where some soldiers had given her some ketchup, curry powder and Worcestershire sauce that they brought with them from the UK. She went to work experimenting on a sauce that would provide much needed contrast to the limited post-war rations the people were accustomed to living on, a flavorful spicy sauce poured over Bratwursts hot off the grill that she would patent two years later. No photos of me mixing the ingredients this time because it’s all pretty simple and self explanatory. Now though, a new product has been launched which is said to be just like McDonald's curry sauce - and it only costs 99p. Ah yes, Curry Ketchup. Just as you’d think, it’s curryflavoured ketchup mixed with several other spices and it’s pure wonderful in my book. I tried the McDonald's dip first, and to be honest, I didn't like it. It lives it up to its name in that it's very sweet. It's also quite vinegary. It tastes a bit like sugar, vinegar and that cheap curry powder that's been on your shelf for five years mixed together.

Chips and curry sauce - it's generally a winner. It's a rewarding combination of fried carbs and spicy gloop that can rarely go wrong. Some hardy souls even put cheese on theirs, but that's another conversation. I’m pretty sure that mosteveryone has a bottle of tomato ketchup on hand and it’s probably Heinz.I know we do. Over in Germany, having curry ketchup aroundis aboutas common and it’s usually the Helabrand. If anyone favours a brand besides Hela, please share it with me just because I’m always interested in knowing things like that.
