About this deal

By deploying the latest X-Trans III processor, the XT20 enjoys significant upgrades in autofocus over its predecessor; indeed it offers almost the same AF options as the flagship XT2. They can both can shoot 1080/240p slow-motion footage and they offer the very latest F-Log 2 profile with up to 14+ stops of dynamic range.

To see how the X-T20 handles a subject approaching in a straight line, we usedthe generic 'Set 1' described above. In this instance we used a 3x3 Zone AF area. The Fujifilm X-T20's maximum shutter speed is 30 seconds in the Time shutter speed mode, and there's a Bulb mode which allows exposures up to 60 minutes long, which is excellent news if you're seriously interested in night photography. The shot below was taken using a shutter speed of 30 seconds at ISO 200. At the end of the drive dial is the Panorama mode, which lets you choose from medium and long, with panning in any of four directions. Like Sony and Panasonic, the XT20 will capture multiple images during the pan and stitch them together in-camera for you. The stitching works quite well as demonstrated in the examples below. Note my horizontal and vertical pans in the long size measured 9600×1440 and 9600×2160 pixels respectively.

The X-T10 was no slouch when it came to auto-focusing, but Fujifilm have made the X-T20's AF system even better. It can auto-focus in as little as 0.06 seconds and offers an increased number of AF points - 91 versus the X-T10's 49 - again laid out in a 7 x7 grid, with a lot more of the imaging area covered by fast and precise phase detection AF pixels. There's a small lever on top of the X-T20 for turning on the dedicated Auto Mode. In this Advanced SR AUTO mode, the X-T20 automatically selects the optimum shooting settings from 58 preset scenes, including the best AF mode. More confident beginners can then use the rear Command Dial to select a specific scene type. While this new switch makes it easy to enter full Auto mode, we did find ourselves accidentally turning it on quite a lot, as the switch is very similar to the On/Off switch and also positioned near it. Auto ISO works well and is very flexible, with high and low ISO limits programmable, as well as minimum shutter speed. I know the XT20 can continuously autofocus very successfully, even when set to its top speeds, but you may not experience the desired level of performance with the kit zooms. Indeed I found the continuous autofocus with the XF 18-55mm proved disappointing with anything travelling beyond a modest speed. Of course your mileage may vary, but again if you’re into shooting fast subjects, you should aim for one of the LM lenses sooner rather than later.

Externally the XT20 looks almost identical to the XT10, with only a handful of minor control differences. As such, it’s a compact, retro-styled camera that resembles a shrunken-down version of the flagship XT2 with a wealth of manual control dials and a centrally-located viewfinder hump. This primarily means that the XS20 is able to offer the same sophisticated auto-focusing and additional 6K video codecs which the XT5 also supports. Pixel Shift Multi-shot Dual Pixel AF is a variation of on-sensor phase detection that has left/right-looking diodes on every pixel, rather than masked-out pixels on traditional PDAF systems. The X-T20 offers five different settingsthat define how it handles subject movement. You can't fine-tune it like on the X-T2,but most of the X-T20's peers don't allow you to tweak this at all. in., approx. 2,360K-dot OLED color viewfinder, Coverage of viewing area vs. capturing area : approx. 100%x 2832, 6000 x 3376, 4000, x 4000, 4240 x 2832, 4240 x 2384, 2832 x 2832, 3008 x 2000, 3008 x 1688, 2000 x 2000 The X-T20 actually has two kinds of shutter, mechanical and electronic. When using only its mechanical focal-plane shutter, the X-T20 has a very adaptable top shutter-speed limit of 1/4000th second in all shooting modes. There's no built-in ND filter, so if you want to use the XF 35mm lens at F/1.4 in very bright sunlight, for example, then it's a good idea to buy an actual glass ND filter. The X-T20 utilises a focal-plane shutter rather than the leaf shutter that the X100/S cameras have, much like a regular DSLR camera. This results in slightly noisier operation than on those very quiet cameras, although the shutter on the X-T20 is pretty stealthy by DSLR standards, and a much slower flash-sync speed of 1/180th second (versus the X100/S's 1/400th second). To make the camera less obtrusive there's a Silent menu option which turns off the speaker, flash, AF-assist lamp and most importantly the shutter-release sound, instantly making the X-T20 perfectly suited to more candid photography.

You can also read our detailed Fujifilm X-S20 review and Fujifilm X-T5 review to find out exactly what we think of both cameras. Sensor An added bonus for some people is the inclusion of a built-in pop-up flash, something that the more pro-oriented XT5 doesn't have. Both cameras can also be powered and charged via a USB-C connection, which is useful if you're out and about and have a compatible power-bank to plug the camera into. Webcam The optical quality is very good for this type of lens: fine sharpness, good flare resistance and decent bokeh at the longest focal length despite the slow aperture. One of its strengths is the optical stabilisation, which is rated 5 stops by CIPA standards and allows you to shoot at around half a second at 18mm. The internal motor is fast and silent which makes it a good companion for continuous autofocus and action shots.
