About this deal

The bad: Not too much at this price point. The strap is quite tough, and apparently takes a while to break in. The LHD crown is not built for using on this fat boys wrist. It’s a small screw down crown and it’s very hard to wind or correct something ‘on wrist’. Not a big complaint though. The Citizen Promaster NY0040 was introduced in 1997. I’ll be honest that I do not see a direct predecessor to this watch, but Citizen had clearly started down a far more revolutionary path in the 1980’s versus its Japanese competitor. Promasters often fused digital displays with analog while embracing quartz and eco-drive technology to create some interesting designs during the period. Still, though, the NY0040 contains a classic automatic movement and has certainly been produced for long enough to earn classic status in its own rite. Evidence of such status is its frequent use by military divers. Another great thing about the watch is that you can always change the strap to any bracelet you prefer. If you don’t like the rubber strap or are looking forward to wearing the watch in a more casual or formal setting, this is what you do. The Citizen NY0040 looks good on any strap such as nylon and stainless steel. Price of the Citizen NY0040

So what is the water resistance rating of the Citizen NY0040? For anyone skim reading through you may not have found this out just yet. This Citizen NY0040 has an impressive diver’s 200m water resistance rating which makes it a proper ISO certified diving watch.

Verdict

I’m sure that when this is the case, the Promaster will get its chance to shine once again. Let’s take a closer look at this wonderfully underrated dive watch, which I feel makes for the perfect entry-level mechanical watch, or even a perfect weekend beater. Whether you wear it on the jangly OEM bracelet with its handy diver’s extension, on a vented rubber strap, or on a humble Nato strap, you really can’t go wrong. We, at MONOCHROME, are used to seeing, touching and wearing all kinds of watches, from accessible to ultra high-end. And still, this Citizen Promaster Marine Automatic Diver 200m Super Titanium Green Dial NY0100-50XE (sorry for the long name…) is an impressive model. If you add the price into the equation, the overall quality is stunning, with a watch that rewards you with durability, comfort, resistance and, not the least of factors, a very cool design too. I’m sure many people would be well aware having already seen the ISO diving certification but it’s worth mentioning that the Citizen NY0040 does have a screw down crown function. If you haven’t used a screw down crown before I’d have a read of this useful forum thread. First thing first, Citizen has a number of different iterations of the Promaster, all of which start with reference NY008. The watches are the same at their core but vary in terms of bezel, dial, and case color. With that said, if you come to the conclusion that you like this watch, but that the Citizen Promaster NY0085 specifically isn’t your cup of tea, there are other iterations to choose from.

Worth noting is that the reference NY0040 only refers to the Promaster diver collection as a whole. Due to this watch’s popularity, Citizen has released many different iterations and color versions of this model, and the versions can be noticed in the following letters of the reference number, as follows: NY0040-XXXX. The watch is presented on an Oyster-style three-link stainless steel bracelet with a safety clasp. The downside to many affordable watches is that the bracelet is the part that is compromised with the most, and to some extent, that is true here too. The good news is that the bracelet goes very well with the overall sporty design of this watch. Without further ado, in this article, we are reviewing and looking closer at the Citizen Promaster NY0085. Citizen Promaster NY0085 caseLegibility is a key feature that all dive watches must-have. It’s not a dive watch if you can’t read it when you’re deep underwater, right? So, the brand made sure that the Citizen NY0040 has great legibility. Hands & Markers Whereas both the Seiko SKX007 and the Citizen NY0040 feature day and date functions, the Citizen is the only model which also features hand winding which is something many people look for in an automatic watch. They’ve gone for both a brushed and polished finish which is something I’ve always been quite a fan of. The top of the casing is finished in a brushed style, however, the sides of the casing have a polished shiny finish. I tend to find this sort of design gives a watch a high-quality look. In that case, you’ll be happy to learn that there are many affordable dive watch options on the market. One of them is from Citizen, which has a number of different dive watches in its collection. And one of those, in turn, is the Citizen Promaster NY0085, and this is the watch we are going to look closer at in this article to help you decide if it is really worth buying.

The iconic 1982 Citizen Professional Diver 1300m. To deal with saturation diving, Citizen opted for an ultra-hermetic, rust-resistant titanium case. This watch also offers great value for money. While Seiko is not a bad choice in itself, this watch also deserves a rightful spot beside the SKX007. From its looks to the functions it offers, it’s a classic watch. Moreover, you get an automatic movement and a water-resistance of 200 metres. Plus, you also get an ISO-certified watch! It’s hard to go wrong with this watch. Up Close with the Citizen Promaster NY0040

Both the hands and the hour markers have a good coating of lume to make reading in dim lit conditions much easier. Most decent diving watches are expected to come with sufficient lume. Powering the NY0040 is a Citizen in house movement, the Miyota 8200. This is a 21 jewel movement with a 21,600 BPH which many find to be more accurate than the Seiko SKX007, although this can cause quite the debate. Personally, I’d have preferred a coin edged bezel design but that’s more down to my personal taste than anything else. That being said, a lot of other people obviously seem to like it. It’s also an automatic watch, so a lot of watch enthusiasts consider this a great diver. It’s one of the many reasons it gets compared to the SKX007 from Seiko. Both are great options for entry-level sports or dive watches. They also both carry the same aesthetic and practically the same functions. However, the distinct differences make the two ultimately different from each other.

Despite this being an automatic movement, the Miyota 8200 comes with a hand-winding feature. Not all affordable dive watches have this. Particularly, you won’t get this feature from a Seiko watch like the SKX007. 4. The Strap

Citizen NY0040-09EE Men's watch - Automatic Watches - Series: Promaster

The watch is presented in a sporty stainless steel case design featuring a satin finish. As a contrast, however, the sides are polished. This is something that enhances the impression of quality and shows Citizen has paid attention to the details, even though it is an affordable watch. Many dive watches can be recognized as a dive watch from miles away, and this is certainly one of them.
