About this deal

It is rare to find a book which gives a completely different and exciting perspective on a historical figure, particularly those aimed at younger readers, so ‘Darwin’s Super-Pooping Worm Spectacular’ is a particularly delightful read.

Two good caterpillar friends with a lot in common go through the amazing process of metamorphosis. Then they pop out of their cocoons– one, a butterfly, and the other, a moth. Now they have new differences. Butterfly’s wings are colorful and Moth’s are beige. Butterfly flies during the day and Moth flies at night. Even still, some things are still the same — they still have cool moves and a good friendship.

The silly story, amusing characters, and detailed descriptions of the various soups will delight children of all ages. Home Is Calling The Journey of the Monarch Butterfly written by Katherine Pryor, illustrated by Ellie Peterson Microscopic ‘mini-fauna’ rarely receives even a footnote in most children’s books. Unseen Worlds attempts to put that right with a series of dramatic dioramas of everyday habitats and the tiny, but no less charming, animals they contain. Ants are everywhere. Seriously, try to find a place on the planet where they aren’t prevalent. Every one of us has witnessed them marching in formation and cooperating to build their homes and gather food.

As would be expected from a book by Buglife, it doesn’t just focus on the well-known and pretty insects – the butterflies, moths, bees, ladybirds, dragonflies and so on. It also covers some of the lesser-known or less-liked groups, and explains why they are fascinating animals too. “Do you think wasps are annoying and pointless?” the reader is asked. “Think again!” Discover how they are important pollinators, as well as controlling plant pests. This book shares over 500 fun and exciting facts about bugs, great for teaching them about what almost everything there is to know about bugs! 10: National Geographic Little Kids First Big Book of Bugs Flies can be pesky, but they are pretty adorable in the silly Diary of a Fly by Doreen Cronin. Your kids will relate to Fly's nervousness about the first day of school. Fly learns a lot and so will your kids. The Very Busy Spider was a favorite of my son’s from the get-go. We have the board book edition and what I love about it, is that the spider web in it is raised and offers a sensory element to reading the story. This is a story of hard work, persistence, and also helps reinforce animal sounds. Perfect for toddlers! Author Amy Stewart offers up just the right balance in the gory details to get them hooked, but at the same time educated by the ecological lessons and anatomical details with which the text is littered.Aimed at children aged seven to nine, this is an excellent overview of insects and other arthropods, the important jobs that they do and why they are “the real-life superheroes of planet Earth”. Though listed as fiction but I consider it as nonfiction. But it is really a great factual book about bugs for older toddlers/young preschoolers. It is really hard to find simple, short books that include facts and this one is perfect. It doesn’t go into the life cycles of butterflies or how lightning bugs light up. But it does use descriptive words with bright and charming illustrations. Great for the under 3 crowd, and useful for older kids too!

The Very Lonely Firefly by Eric Carle is one of my son’s favorite books to read before bed. Not so much because of the story but because the board book version has flashing lights at the end! The story is all about a firefly looking for another firefly but mistaking all different light for a friend. Toddlers love this book because it gives them a chance to be bossy and say “No that’s a flashlight” to the firefly. The text is the right length for little guys but not boring for older kids. I need to mention the little lights are really quite magical in a dark bedroom. Especially if you are in a place that doesn’t have fireflies!
