Our Unique Structure: Because we have no shareholders. the main aim of the company is not to make huge profits, but instead to supply great seeds to home gardeners at reasonable prices, and to educate people about home seed-saving. It's a good idea to put netting over Broccoli to protect against the pigeons. This will also protect against hungry Caterpillars. It’s worth growing plants on until they are at 4 to 6 leaves as this will deter snails and slugs. Set traps for them if sown open ground. Broccoli can be sown late winter to early spring or even autumn sowing, giving you the opportunity for a near-constant supply of this healthy veg The Real Seed Catalogue is produced by The Real Seed Collection Ltd ~ Company No 5924934 ~ VAT No 841181938 ~ DEFRA registered Seed Merchant No 7289 ~ Caterpillars strip foliage, tunnel into the hearts of cabbages and spoil produce with their droppings or frass. There are two cabbage-white butterflies that do serious damage: the large white and the small white. Damage is also caused by moth caterpillars.

Broccoli is part of the cabbage family, it’s a large plant in vegetable terms. The different varieties have stunning form and colourful, edible foliage. Why not try some exotic Broccoli such as Chinese ‘Wok Broccoli’. For maximum nutrients steam cook Broccoli. Growing Broccoli from seed We absolutely love the combination of lemon, garlic and chilli to go with broccoli (all ingredients and full method in the recipe card below), but there are other flavours that go very well. Add the flour, polenta, nutritional yeast, paprika, chilli flakes, baking powder, bicarb and salt, and stir well to combine. Stir in the flax seeds, yoghurt, milk and oil, and mix into a batter. Mix with olive oil and Egyptian Dukkahand roast in the oven (the option we took in our Dukkah Roasted Vegetables with Spicy Couscous). A hybrid of Chinese kale and standard broccoli is referred to by various names in different parts of the world. In the UK, it is most widely known as Tenderstem Broccoli (which is a trademarked name), whilst in the US and other countries, it is called Baby Broccoli or Broccolini. It is long-stem broccoli that has edible leaves, flower shoots and tender stems, and is a perfect no-waste vegetable. Flavour-wise, it is similar to regular broccoli itself, with slightly sweeter notes and a softer texture. Low in calories and high in Vitamin C, it is certainly a healthy and nutritious vegetable to use in your cooking. How To Cook Tenderstem Broccoli?

The small white is similar, emerging a little earlier in the spring, laying eggs and producing caterpillars that feed singly. The chrysalids form on the plants. There is also a second generation of small whites, which cause damage into the autumn. The second generation of both types will not hatch until spring. Cabbage moths are on the wing at night during May and June, laying batches of round eggs on the leaf undersides that will hatch after two weeks. The caterpillars feed for at least a month before they mature. They pupate in the soil and generally hatch the following spring. But a few will hatch in late summer and into the autumn. They can be found in early winter if it’s mild. The chrysalids of the second generation hatch in the spring. Fry.The best way to stir fry is in a wok. You may want to cut the long stems in half to speed up the process. Add a drizzle of your favourite oil (use sesame oil for an Asian-style side dish) and stir fry for 4-5 minutes on high heat. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and red chilli flakes, and serve! This is a vegan adaptation of a recipe I wrote (and loved) for Tenderstem. You’ll need a 23cm cake tin. Our Seed Club: Due to ridiculous seed laws here in the UK, many of our fantastic vegetable seeds cannot in theory be supplied to the public, because they are not on the UK National List of permitted vegetable varieties1 But we do supply them to members of our seed club.

Steam. It only takes about 4 minutes to cook in a colander placed above a simmering saucepan of water and covered with a lid ( a steam pan). Simply sprinkle some sea salt on top and serve. Because of this, as well as just eating as a green, they are a really great thing to mix in with rice, potato cakes, couscous or stir-fries, as an easy way to make a very simple and plain dish seem really special.

You can recognise clubroot damage as swollen roots with 'finger and thumb'-like projections are the typical signs. The plants wilt, appear stunted and go grey/blue as their roots are destroyed. They typically recover from the wilting at night. Infected roots soon rot into a foul-smelling mass, discharging spores into the soil.

This is one of the very few greens that keep a great texture when cooked, with a very slight crunch to them. They're not in any way chewy - but they just don't go completely soft the way that for example spinach does.Wet and acid soil are the favoured conditions of clubroot. Improving drainage will help. Making raised beds is a good way of doing this. Use treated boards, for example, to make beds 1-1.5m wide and at least 15cm higher than surrounding soil. Acid soils can be made more alkaline and much less prone to clubroot infection by the addition of lime or chalk. Lime is cheap, so this is the most economic way to keep down clubroot.
