About this deal

You know what’s funny about her?’ Justin mused. ‘For a fairy-tale character she’s, like, chronically ugly.’ I experienced many emotions during this read and not all of them were positive. At first, I was confused and I chalked it up to the possibility that the book was translated from Dutch and perhaps the odd whimsy and almost silly tones were just one off for American audiences. So I pressed on but I honestly didn't like large portions of the beginning.

From the blurb, I was prepared (and very much all) for the fun and the flirting - which Essie and Josh delivered in spades! But I got so much more witchy-ness than I was expecting. There was the usual magic and mayhem but amongst the curses and concealments, were small nods to actual witchcraft history and with it's nod to a real life Witchfinder, the storyline was both fascinating and enchanting.

I had such high hopes for this book. I enjoyed Suburban Hell and so wanted to love this book as well. It was a fast read magical read which involved a mystery. I can't fault the writing, unfortunately I did not find it as bewitching as I had hoped. I am still open to reading what Maureen Kilmer writes next as I enjoyed the first book I read by Kilmer. I also felt frustrated by the disastrous use of magic. Even as things went terribly wrong, Sarah was still devoted to trying it again and again. I did not feel any of the mishaps were funny and simply felt the narrator was behaving irresponsibly.

Hex Appeal was a fun, whimsically witchy and entertaining read that serves up cosy, autumnal Encanto meets Hocus Pocus vibes that I thoroughly enjoyed. This is a good witchy read with some really funny moments. Sarah, Katrina and Alicia met in college, and they dabbled in witchcraft. One night, they performed a spell where they asked for the thing they wanted in life, and chose love, riches, and fame. Unfortunately they started a dorm fire that destroyed the dorm and seriously injured their RA. There isn't anything scary in Hex Education except for the characters themselves. I think it would make a great TV show. If you loved Kilmer's Suburban Hell you will like this one too although there isn't anything too creepy this time around.

Fantasy Books Of The Year

Essie Winterscale lives in a huge and ever-changing house in the village of Good Winter, in deepest, darkest Essex. She lives with various witches of various ages, one of whom is still a bit salty about being hanged in the 1700s, one who keeps accidentally casting fertility spells, and one who knits things that create the future. I'm not going to get into the plot much as this book came out several years ago and everyone knows it's about a witch. She haunts the town, but her type of haunting mainly consists of showing up at weird times and places, creeping the hell out of everyone by just standing there, and then she vanishes. Okay, there's more to it than that, but that's the gist. I was pulled in by the wonderfully purple cover but Kate Johnson's writing had me caring about these characters so deeply! Josh and Essie are flawed but still optimistic about love and life even though they've been through some traumatic experiences. I loved them together and was fighting for them to get their HEA right to the very end.

Essie Winterscale lives in a huge, ever changing magic house in the village of Good Winter. A house who’s inhabitants are as magical and eccentric as their constantly shifting home.Picturesque as can be, an outsider would have a hard time imagining the horror the town's citizens endure on a daily basis.

this was written in 2013 and originally set in a small dutch town, and i really liked this part of the author’s afterword:HIGHLY recommended for fans of Practical magic, The ex hex or The fix-it witches series. Bonus content for me was the author's note at the end with a brief history of witchcraft and the witch trials in Europe/North America. I am sad that Maureen Kilmer’s sophomore release hit so many wrong notes for me, but I’m glad its spell has been broken so I can move on to (hopefully) more enjoyable things. The greats of fiction Stephen King and George R. R. Martin lead the fanfare for HEX, so be assured that Thomas Olde Heuvelt’s debut English novel is both terrifying and unputdownable in equal measure.
