The other most likely problem is too little light. If begonia cuttings don’t get enough light throughout the day, then they won’t grow roots; they’ll try to focus on preserving what foliage they have left. Bright, indirect sun or full spectrum LED light is best. Wilting or dropping leaves If you’re feeling adventurous, try a method you haven’t before; begonias tend to take well to propagation, so while you might lose one or two cuttings, it’s easy to start over again! Here are the best methods for propagating begonias. Water Propagation Method Try combining white edge or center in hostas (e.g. patriot, or fire and ice) along with perennial white flowers (e.g. snowdrop anemone, or sweet woodruff), and then add in the big spectacular blooms of a nonstop white begonia. Every good plant project needs a basic set of tools to be successful. You don’t go around tending to your plants without a watering can, and you shouldn’t start propagating plants without shears. It’s the same principle, but either way, here’s a list of the most important items to have before you start propagating your begonia. Plant shears

There is also a type of begonia which is a hybrid of fibrous and tuberous begonias that are known as rieger begonias. So to make things easier and more organized in this article, I have divided this list into 6 separate types of begonias: Wax, tuberous, rieger, rhizomatous, and finally hardy begonias. Within each type of begonia there are many, many varieties. Let’s take a look at some of my absolute favorites! Fibrous/Wax Amstel Batik begonias have the classic rosettes of flowers sitting atop succulent leaves that all rieger begonias have. These ones are such an unexpected color, a bright coral orange. They look great in a shady pot.Stem cuttings may be used to propagate fibrous rooted and cane-stemmed begonias. Take 7–10cm (3–4in) cuttings in April, insert in a sandy cuttings compost and root with bottom heat of 18–21°C (64–70°F). For rhizomatous begonias cuttings may need to be longer than 10cm (4in) so as to include a leaf node at the base.

When the new growth is around 5cm long, take basal cuttings of these new shoots and root them at 18-22 °C.Begonia ‘Super Cascade’—This angel wing begonia has a spectacular array of colorful pink and red dangling flower clusters. The elegant showy flowers can measure up to 5” (13 cm) and create an eye-catching display. Begonias are a classic horticulture favorite amongst hobbyists and professionals alike for obvious reasons. Just in case those reasons aren’t as obvious as we’d thought, these plants are just full of surprises: luscious blooms, elegant foliage, and strange growing patterns. It is actually a hanging variety of a fibrous begonia, so it will take more sun than the tuberous varieties. I see big balls of these in hanging baskets on lamp posts along city pathways. Summerwings Dark Elegance If reds your color, these are a must to splash around your yard.

As bergenias are happy in most situations, in sun or shade, rich or poor soil, they will grow well in most gardens. Still, there are many cultivars to choose from, differing in various ways, including: Leaf colours If you’re like us and you have way too many of each kind of plant out there, then you may want to invest in some cheap plastic or bamboo plant tags to help identify the cuttings while they’re still maturing. It’s easier than it looks to mislabel a begonia if you have more than one.

Often available in both powder and liquid form, rooting hormone can greatly increase the chances of success with any type of propagation. This stuff can really come in handy, especially with slow-growing plants. The genus name Begonia was coined by Charles Plumier, a French patron of botany, and adopted by Linnaeus in 1753, to honor Michel Bégon, a former governor of the French colony of Saint-Domingue (now Haiti). This step only applies to cuttings that have been grown in soil, but if you did water propagation, you can begin to free the begonia cuttings from their vases by carefully pulling out the roots from any tight spaces. Try not to let the roots dry out completely before they’re potted. Now that you’ve made your cuts, you can go ahead and remove some leaf (if there is foliage present) by cutting leaves that are long in half to make them shorter. Remove any leaves on nodes that will be submerged in water; we don’t want them to rot.

Nonstop fire is another one of my all time favorites. It has large, sometimes single, sometimes double blossoms that are big and rival a rose’s iconic blossom. This variety has a creamy yellow interior and blushes a reddish pink at the margins. The most common variety of rhizomatous begonias are Rex begonias. While these are often thought of as house plants, they actually make really great garden plants. Especially in pots where their intricate and beautiful foliage can be on full display. All, except one, of the varieties I will be listing are rex begonias. Most other rhizomatous begonias are better suited as houseplants. Place in a suitable medium, as above, and, again, provide bottom heat of 18-21 °C. Propagating Fibrous-Rooted & Cane-Stemmed Begonia Rhizomatous:These begonias have fleshy roots and stems creeping along the surface of the soil. They are grown mostly for their interesting foliage and are more often used as houseplants than as garden plants. Their blooms can cover the entire plant. You’ve probably noticed a lot of begonias from the Amstel series on my list. I just love the upright rosettes of flowers on their fleshy green leaves. They are low maintenance and provide color throughout the season. I couldn’t narrow it down to one color as being my favorite since I use them all. Blitz is the bright clear yellow variety. It makes a sunny pop of color in shade gardens and shady pots. Elatior Borias These creamy colors will add a whimsical look to any garden. Since begonias are monoecious, meaning they bear both male and female flowers from one plant, there are lots of man-made and natural hybrids out there waiting to be discovered. It’s for this reason that many begonias look nothing alike, and why collecting them can be so fun and fascinating!
