About this deal

Integrated breakaway camera mount requiring no zip ties or tape, designed to break away upon impact to reduce the risk of injury Bell’s new Super Air is the first trail helmet with Flex Spherical + MIPS technology. Crucially, it will move 10-15mm during an impact event, but it doesn’t encroach on the sizing or the fit – in fact the Bell Super Air is easily the most comfortable half shell we’ve tested. Bell’s retention device is also attached to the MIPS, so there’s no restriction of movement. Float Fit Race - A state-of-the-art lightweight fit system featuring seamless integration with MIPS, an easy-to-turn dial, wide-range vertical adjustment and padded width-adjustable cradles

Its stable – it literally doesn’t move even on the roughest descents – and also incredibly comfortable and, unlike the Giro Switchblade, is dead easy to put on because you can pull those side extensions slightly apart, so you don’t catch your ears. With 15 vents, the DropFrame ventilation is really good for a bigger helmet. Some helmets fit like a glove and are nice to wear – this is one of them. All mountain bike helmets pass the current CE test so we’re taken it as read that they’ll work if you clonk your head on a passing tree. However, there’s currently no test for fit, venting or adjustability, which is why we’ve focused on these things when testing. To test the fit, we measured the shape of each one but that doesn’t reveal any hot spots, which is why we did lots of in-field testing, to test the true comfort. Riding hard we could also gauge the breathability and venting of the helmets. Key features of the best mountain bike helmets: Integrated breakaway camera mount requiring no zip ties or tape, designed to "break away" upon impact to reduce the risk of injuryLots of safety certifications, enhanced protective features, well ventilated, deep fit with lots of coverage Reasons to buy: Roc Loc Air 5 MIPS protection, secure and comfortable fit, antimicrobial padding, adjustable goggle, detachable POV camera mount, excellent ventilation Get hold of a fabric or paper tape measure if possible. If you don’t have one, don’t try and wrap a metal tape measure around your noggin, it doesn’t work – believe us. In the absence of a fabric/paper tape measure, find some string and wrap that around your head and note its length. Position adjustable visor: The no-slip design allows on-the-fly adjustments so the rider can position visor at desired angle with a simple tug up or down If you find an item at a lower price with another commercial internet retailer, you will receive it from us at the same price, provided the conditions listed in the link are met.

Fusion In-Mould polycarbonate shell - A process pioneered by Bell bonds the helmet's outer shell to the EPS foam liner to create a sturdier helmet. The Roll Cage™ is a reinforcement made of particularly impact-resistant Nylon®, which is embedded directly in the EPS inner foam of Bell's best helmets. It provides extra stability and safety.

I give the Bell Sixer MIPS Helmet a 4.5 out of 5. If you want a helmet that breathes well, sits secure on your head and has limitless adjustments, this is the helmet for you. In terms of general lifespan, it’s typically advised that you should think about replacing your helmet every two to three years. Some companies in the past have stated a longer term than this but we’d feel a bit iffy using a helmet that’s had more than three years proper trail riding use. General wear and tear as well as things like UV degradation can have negative affects on the performance and reliability of your helmet. Best mountain bike helmets protection standards The Mips system is designed to provide added safety for helmets in many accidents. For certain impacts, the Mips system can reduce harmful rotational motion that might otherwise be transferred to the user’s head. Over the last several months of riding, I have been able to put the Sixer through every situation. Well almost. Thankfully I haven’t taken a direct hit in the helmet. Instead I let Drew handle that end of the testing. Despite carnage to other parts of his body, what’s left of his brain seemed intact and un-rattled – impressive considering his dive. The fit is outstanding– one of the most comfortable helmets we’ve worn. Each section of the harness is custom tunable to your head. The rear occiput strap has four different settings for height and a large range that tightens the whole harness. The chinstrap is easy to adjust around the ears, and doesn’t catch on your enduro-beard.

The Lab

The Sixer has been a great helmet for me because of the over 25 vents that allow air to easily flow through the helmet and over your head, helping you stay cool on those hot days. As part of a new wave of moto-inspired, open-face trail helmets, the Giro Tyrant Spherical provides significantly more head coverage than most of the standard mountain bike helmets we tested. Giro bills this beefy lid as a versatile option that can span the gap between gravity, trail, and dirt jump helmets. After weeks of rigorous testing, we support Giro's claim that it's an incredibly versatile helmet despite its heavy, protective construction. The first thing you'll notice when donning the Tyrant is that it shares a unique dual-shell construction with its half-shell counterpart, the Manifest. The inner shell is low-density EPP foam for minor impacts, and the outer shell is high-density EPS to absorb major collisions. Despite its double-shell composition, the helmet keeps a relatively low profile on your head, and the vents do a surprisingly good job of keeping things cool. Combine the innovative protection and coverage with Giro's Roc Loc harness system and refined shell shape, and you have a helmet that stays comfortable all day. Whether pinning the berms or taking in the sights, welcome the perfect level of protection with the Sixer MIPS Helmet from Bell. MIPS is a sliding plane system within the helmet designed to slow or prevent the amount of energy that is transmitted to or from the head. Progressive Layering utilizing two layers of foam: a hard layer against the outer shell closer to the point of potential impact, and a less dense layer closer to the head. Each layer has a thin hard shell molded into it.
