About this deal

While the story behind Dr Oliver and his buns may be somewhat mythical (the buns only really appeared for the first time at London’s Great Exhibition in 1851), it’s more certain that the doctor was responsible for Bath Olivers. They’re plain biscuits, now often eaten with cheese. We call upon you for a full boycott of United Biscuit products. Not a crumb shall touch our mouths until we see our anointed biscuit returned. A partial list of products can be found below. Cut the rolled dough into circular shapes that are about 8 cm in diameter. Place them on wetter oven trays. Try it at… Paxton & Whitfieldon John Street, or in a toastie or sandwich in theBath Soft Cheese caféon the A431 in Kelston. Press down all over the surface with the rolling pin, then roll out again and repeat. The 1905 recipe that I use suggests giving the dough 8 or 9 'turns', but I usually stop after 6 turns.

If modern Christianity shows a tendency to minimise or sanitise the suffering on the cross, we also miss the meaning if we focus solely on the physical ordeal of crucifixion. The details of Jesus’s last hours are certainly painful to dwell upon but countless people in history have been crucified, including many who were innocent of the crimes that they were crucified for. What made such a death unique in his case was who he claimed to be. The gospel writers tell us that Jesus already knew everything that was going to happen to him because it had been prophesied long before his birth: he knew he was born to suffer and sacrifice his life of his own free will, and so become the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. I believe that every country has its national biscuit brand or type that they are proud of and would hate to see go away. Whatever the true origins, one thing is sure – the Sally Lunn bun is delicious. Lord Nelson’s father wrote a letter to his son shortly after the great naval hero’s victory at Copenhagen, saying how he remembered Lord and Lady Hamilton seemed to have enjoyed cream cheese so he was sending them some of Bath’s own. Had he known what his son getting up to with Lady Hamilton he might not have been so encouraging!

The company continued to produce the biscuit well into the second half of the twentieth century. As of October 2020 United Biscuits have ceased production of Bath Olivers. No announcement was made. [3]‘ In Hamlet, Revenge! (1937), part III, chapter one, mystery writer Michael Innes places Bath Olivers among the standard amenities of a country house bedroom in the 1930s. As the house steward explains to Inspector Appleby, "Two Bath Olivers, two Richtea, and two digestive in every room. Replenished daily and changed three times a week. The Bath Olivers go to Mr Bagot [the butler]—he has a Partiality for Them—and the others to the servants' hall." The Bath Oliver has appeared in countless stories and period dramas. Perhaps most famously, poet Ezra Pound speaks in Hugh Kenner’s The Pound Era thusly:The reference to Bath Oliver biscuits by Mary Norton in ' The Borrowers' 1952 evokes an Edwardian gentility: ". . . and it would comfort him to see, each evening at dusk, Mrs. Driver appear at the head of the stairs and cross the passage carrying a tray for Aunt Sophy with Bath Oliver biscuits and the tall, cut glass decanter of Fine Old Pale Madeira." The biscuits have a colourful history after being created in around 1750 by renowned physician William Oliver in the city from which they draw their name.

Getting ready • Sprinkle the yeast onto the warm water and leave to soften. Heat together the butter, milk and salt until the butter melts, pour into a large mixing bowl and set aside until it is just lukewarm. In October 2020 United Biscuits temporarily suspended production of Bath Olivers owing to COVID-19 disruption, without a prior announcement made. A run of production occurred in December 2020. Sad to hear that United Biscuits have ceased production of Bath Oliver Biscuits this month. One of the lines to fall victim to a more limited production because of the pandemic it seems. The company haven’t said they won’t make them again but wouldn’t be drawn on when production could re-start. Anyway – a good excuse to re-publish this story from earlier this year. Another bun with a mystery! There are various stories as to the identity of Sally Lunn, inventor of these large brioche-style treats, served either sweet or savoury.

The façade of the new Bond Street building has long been restored to its natural stone but the familiar deep red it was once painted survives here”. Preparing to eat and drink your way around Bath? It would be like a Beefeater discovering the Crown Jewels had gone missing from the Tower of London one morning, and shrugging his shoulders. We know dear reader, how baffaling this must be to you. But indeed, we have verified it ourselves with United Biscuits. Initially, the impression Mr. Sitch received was that the stalwart Bath Oliver was being discontinued. In later correspondence with us, the representative of Pladis/United Biscuit indicated to us that the line had been “de-prioritized” due to COVID-19, leaving us with the impression that it could return when normal life resumes. United Biscuit and its subsidiary appears to be toying with this staple food, and needlessly leaving our biscuit’s future hanging in the balance. The Queen was no older than 14. Mr Bruce told her what had happened. “What was so lovely was that the Queen had no knowledge of it,” he said. “Telling her seemed strangely odd.”However, he added: “There had been in a book in our research that the Queen had been shown them during the war when they appeared at Windsor.”
