Wayne wants a ride to a certain part of the city via gondola. So he disguises himself as a rich gentleman who hires a gondolier's services for the whole day at a suspicious rate. While on a ride to a distant part of the city, Wayne lets slip a trace of a thuggish accent, so gondolier suspects that he's being set up for a robbery and hastily drops him off at the nearest port—exactly the spot where Wayne wanted. The gondolier didn't even ask him to pay. He perched on the water tower, looming over the church. So he was here, finally. He felt his eye begin to twitch, and an ache rose within him. The new Mistborn books move the series into a richly imagined 19th century analogue world with elements of the wild west mixed with magic and science. It's a wonderful concoction from a master storyteller.
Karma Houdini Warranty: Karma finally catches up with Suit in his jail cell when the mysterious power behind the Set decide he has served well, and he will be allowed to serve further in another Realm. Malevolent Architecture: Lampshaded. Wax finds it strange that a temple intended to store something would be so ridiculously lethal; what if the Sovereign died on the way in? Because the Bands aren't inside the temple. Death Course: Discussed. Wax wonders if the Bands were stored in the temple for the Sovereign to return, why have such lethal traps? If he was a god and could survive it, why would he need the Bands? Because the Bands aren't behind the death traps at all. Nothing Is Scarier: When Wax is dead, Harmony shows him the threat of what is apparently another god towards Scadrial, and tells him that he's not sure what it is.

He hit the street and strode past a long line of carriages. Guests were already in attendance—Survivorist tenets called for weddings either very early in the morning or late at night. Wax nodded to several people he passed, and couldn’t help slipping his shotgun out of its holster and resting it on his shoulder as he hopped up the steps and shoved the door open before him with a Steelpush. Mayfly–December Romance: Wayne and MeLaan. He's thirty-some and she's about six hundred and virtually immortal, not to mention a Gender Bender. However, they do get along fabulously. At the train station, Wax gets attended to by a physician. The local captain tells him that the robbery was perpetrated by the Nightstreet Gang, a notorious gang in the area. Wax talks to the captain about the gang as he worriedly searches for Wayne. Matieu asks Wax for help in catching the ones that got away, but Marasi reminds him that he already has a task. Wax finally sees moving blue lines and finds Wayne in an empty compartment, hiding in the luggage compartment in the floor. MeLaan is there with him, topless. The Set captured the Southerners, dismantled their airship, and started torturing them to discover how their technology worked. It never occurred to them to just patch the poor souls up and politely ask for details. It took them months to get even the slightest idea of how the technology worked, but Wax's crew got answers from Allik in a few hours just by showing him some common decency. As early as the 4th chapter, why would a temple about the Lord Ruler and his Bands have spear iconography in the murals? After all, who is the spear a symbol of in this world?
Wax inspects the coin again and is drawn into it, seeing a village through the eye of the spiked one. He sees himself as a traveler who is visiting people who are dying. The traveler tells a woman to Survive. Wax sees scars on the traveler’s arm. I wonder who that could be. In the prologue, Wax sneaks around with his sister Telsin. He listens in on his grandmother as she’s talking to a constable about arson. The constable wants to help her but Wax’s grandmother refuses the help. Theme Naming: The Set's leader is called the Sequence, both mathematical terms. A rank within the Set is called an Array. In Suit's conversation with Trell's servant, it speaks in a very logical, almost calculated fashion, possibly hinting at the nature of Trell.Wax can tell that the glass wasn't broken recently because of the dust. He warns of other traps in the room. Edwarn is angry and says it's time to end this. Wax recognizes this as a signal to the mole he figured must be with them and guesses correctly that it's his sister, Telsin. They shoot each other, but only her aluminum bullet hits. Some sort of being with red eyes visits Suit in his jail cell. He ominously announces that they are going to end all life on this sphere. Then he detonates a bomb. Historical In-Joke: The Southerners, who come across as aliens, are flying around in super-advanced airships that they run like a pleasure cruise. Some of the first alien sightings were mysterious airships, full of people on pleasure cruises.
