About this deal

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) have warned that a single serving of three small apricot kernels or one large apricot kernel could put adults over the suggested safe levels of cyanide exposure, while one small kernel could be toxic to an infant. A three-year-old tree can produce at least 20 fruits; these appear in clusters on wood that is at least one year old. Don’t thin the fruits, as you would with apple trees and pear trees, but leave them to develop naturally. When the crop starts to swell, water the tree thoroughly and regularly. Harvest the fruits only when they are fully ripe and come off the tree easily.

These are necessary for human health, but the human body cannot produce them, so people must take them in through diet. Bitter kernels contain small traces of cyanide, which in large quantities may cause nausea, fever, headaches and coma. In 2006, the British Food Standards Agency posted a health alert, claiming that consuming 20 to 30 kernels in a short period of time could result in cyanide poisoning and death. However, cases of cyanide toxicity are rare. It must be remembered that all studies are looking at extracts and not the whole apricot kernel, it is impossible to determine with any accuracy the amounts in a natural product and so the consumption warning remains at 1-2 kernels per person, per day in the UK So now you know all about Bitter Apricot Kernels! The question is... how do you use them? Remove central flower spike to encourage side shoots, cut central shoot off at its base. Deadhead if you do not want it to self-seed. To harvest seed allow flowers to wither and remove seeds from the central stalk. Store in a cool place. If you removed the central stalk to promote side shoots you will not be able to harvest seed.
