About this deal

Thanks to the current hype around non-alcoholic spirits for drinks, there are more and more brands and products, offering an incredible selection. However, this list focuses exclusively on the best options. This is easily the best alternative to classic American bourbon, with its rich notes of caramel, chewy toffee, and charred oak. I really like Escape’s Cinnamon Fire Whiskey. If it weren’t such a niche flavor, it would be the first on this list. This is priced where you would expect for a non alcoholic whisky, but do note how whisky isn’t mentioned in any of their marketing materials – this is a great alternative to whisky, but it is not a replacement. Give it a try if you want to experience something new.

Ideally, I’ll find a non alcoholic version that tastes like the real thing, but for now, I’m mixing and experimenting with what I’ve got. Lyre’s American Malt is a non-alcoholic whiskey alternative that was released to market in 2020. After its initial release it won an award in the 2020 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. This Ritual whiskey alternative is probably the closest to actual whiskey in this lineup regarding taste and finish.

It is reminiscent of dark whiskey or rum, with oak barrel flavors, chocolate rye spice, and a warm, drying finish. It’s a great sipper, but it will hold itself extremely well in a mixed drink, too. They’ve incorporated energizing vitamins and ingredients to add in a sort of mood enhancement to the drink. ProductionThe Distillate Reconstruction process involves first identifying the flavor structure of the spirit, along with the elements that contribute to it. These are then distilled to create natural flavors. Those flavors are then carefully blended and become the base of the bourbon. Lyre’s Italian Orange expression is formulated to replicate a bitter orange aperitif, e.g. Campari. This particular flavor stands up well poured into a Negroni, an Americano, or a spritz. We feel like Lyre's really has nailed the bitter orange complexity of some of the best aperitivi.

On a more technical note, non-alcoholic whiskeys are often made with all-natural ingredients, making them healthier. Whatever the reason for it, when I get that urge for a whisky, I don’t always want to drink alcohol, I just want the taste and the warming feeling that it gives me. For a long time, this has seemed an impossible complication of impulses – wanting whisky but not wanting alcohol. This is the largest segment in non-alcoholic spirits with companies like Lyre's, Ritual Zero Proof and ISH. The customer knows what to expect in terms of taste and how to use the product, thanks to the connection to familiar spirits.
