About this deal

A Haunting in Venice was released in the United States on September 15, 2023, by 20th Century Studios. [13] The film had its red carpet premiere at the Odeon Luxe Leicester Square at the West End London on September 11 with none of the cast members in attendance due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. [14] Reception [ edit ] Box office [ edit ] However, as someone who is only a casual fan, just like with the last two films, I'll be judging this solely as a standalone piece and not an adaptation. From that viewpoint, I think the movie is good. Like with the last two movies, the film looks great, is wonderfully shot. This one evokes a strong haunting, Halloween atmosphere. The acting is good by everyone involved, even the child actors. I must admit Kenneth Branagh who I like in some roles and not others is my least favourite characterisation of Hercule Poirot. Another fine display, Hercules third cinema case in this line accomplishes the task of thespian work come to life in the classic way.

Poirot lays out the solution to Mrs Oliver and Mrs Butler. Rowena began an affair with Garfield while her dying husband was still alive. Disgusted by this, Rowena's aunt wrote a codicil that left her fortune to Olga. The lovers then plotted to discredit Olga's claim, hiring Ferrier to replace the codicil with a deliberately clumsy forgery to ensure Rowena inherited everything; the real codicil has now been found by the police. Both Olga and Ferrier were murdered to conceal the deceit, but Rowena suspected someone had witnessed the disposal of Olga's body. Rowena killed Joyce when she claimed she had witnessed a murder, unaware that Joyce had appropriated Miranda's story. The dropping of the vase, which Mrs Whittaker witnessed, was to disguise the fact Rowena was already wet from drowning Joyce. Leopold was murdered because he asked Rowena for money, and she suspected he knew something. Yet, I look at the date of this novel—1969—and realize that perhaps one of my favorite mystery authors was simply getting tired of her characters and writing to meet a deadline. Perhaps she had used up all of her suspenseful endings and gripping characterizations. Granted, Curtain--a novel that ranks with her best works—was still to come, but I think this novel was part of the reason she was so ready to give Poirot his send-off. Hallowe’en Party, Hercule Poirot #36, the second to last Poirot novel, published in 1969, and the second to last written, since Curtain was written in the forties, ready to publish when the end would finally come about (which didn’t happen for more than a quarter of a century later!). To say this is better than you’d expect is no compliment, of course, but it ust is. I had little expectations except to be happily surprised at the cleverness of some aspects of the ending, as I always am, and in that respect was not disappointed. The thinking is that solving that will reveal who killed Joyce, the problem is that the plot starts introducing way to many characters and gets overly complex and confusing - not least the various plot strands that are left unresolved. Miranda meets with Garfield, who takes her to a pagan sacrificial altar with the intention of poisoning her. However, he commits suicide when two youths recruited by Poirot save Miranda's life. Miranda reveals that she was the one who saw Garfield and Rowena drag Olga's body through the quarry garden, and she secretly told Joyce. Miranda had not been present at the preparations for the party, so Joyce tried to seek famous Ariadne's attention by claiming Miranda's story as her own.

What people are saying about A Haunting In Venice

Her first novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles, came out in 1920. During her first marriage, Agatha published six novels, a collection of short stories, and a number of short stories in magazines. The cast is excellent: In addition to ACADEMY AWARD winner Michelle YEOH as a mysterious medium and erotic legend Jamie DORNAN (50 Shades of...) as a war-disabled doctor, lesser-known faces such as Kelly REILLY, Camille COTTIN and Kyle ALLEN also shine. Jude HILL, who played DORNAN's son in BELFAST, and Tina FEY as an Agatha Christie satire are really great. With this slight detour into the horror genre, the series can continue. Poirot himself also becomes more complex. So far, the film has grossed USD 89 million at the worldwide box office. We'll see whether DISNEY is enough for a fourth film. One part dramatic element, one part horror that tests your logic, and one part mystery that weave together into a strong brand of rope to tie everything together. Joyce told everyone at the party she had once seen a murder, but nobody believed her, since she was known for her wild imagination.

A little braggy girl swears loudly that she's seen a murder done years ago. No one believes her because she's known to be a bit of an ass that lies to make herself look better.

One thing that is fascinating following her longest running series is the social climate of the time, with this being first published in 1969 Christie had plenty to say on the sexual revolution at the time. Ariadne Oliver, the well-known crime novelist, was at the party and highly distraught about poor little Joyce. She calls upon her good friend Hercule Poirot to investigate and discover who's responsible for this murder in a quiet English village... With a storm cutting off the palazzo, Poirot interviews the guests, during which he witnesses manifestations of Alicia's ghost and hears a young girl humming a tune. The investigation yields perplexing results:

It's good, its complex but simple, its well thought out, it doesn't rush, it doesn't dawdle, Poirot is in virtually the whole novel, and so is Ariadne Oliver. There's some great characters, a brilliant final deduction and its wonderfully believable, but still dash it all it is only 4 stars. Robert Weaver in the Toronto Daily Star of 13 December 1969 wrote " Hallowe'en Party...is a disappointment, but with all her accomplishments Miss Christie can be forgiven some disappointments...Poirot seems weary and so does the book." It is "scatty” detective writer Ariadne Oliver that invites Poirot to help solve the murder(s), which do pile up near the end. She's a lively character, the best thing that came to the imagination of the later Christie.
